  • For the price its pretty awesome, a dedicated Jeep fishing setup
Taken out twice now. I fish with crankbaits, spoons and spinners only. First try was as the rod came setup out of the blister pack. It had 8lb line already spooled. The line had taken on so much memory that it floated on the water, and since it was so heavy I had a hard time getting my 1/8 lures out there far. Not a single bite that day. On day 2 I disassembled the reel, lubricated the bearings and bail pivot points to which made a noticeable difference in smoothness. I discarded the 8lb line and spooled it with Stren 4lb. Day 2 was productive. I was able to catch 2 dink rainbows, about 8 inches each give or take an inch. I noticed the action is very similar to my Shakespeare Micro Ultralight, in that its very flexible and sort of whippy. It takes a good wind up to launch spoons, however I found with a little practice I could one hand preload cast fairly far. Not as powerfully as my medium action Cirrus, but it certainly worked. The reel drag has no locking clicks so it constantly came loose during casts and I lost a bite due to the drag free spooling. Overall I had 2 wind knots to cut out, and one infinity knot that pulled line from the spool in 2 different places. Had to cut that too. But, for the price and how how compact the system is, it is perfect for my intended use, which is a dedicated Jeep rod to stash under the seat in case I come across some waters on a whim. It catches fish! One thing I wish it had would be a tip protector sleeve, something to hold the rod in the closed position. Right now I run a rubber band through the top eyelet and attach it to the reel arm. Pretty awesome setup for cheap, and with some new line its all good. Not sure id ever need anything more than 4 lb on this rod, its very flexible. 5 stars because this is under 20 dollars for a setup that catches fish. ... show more

  • Lightweight, sturdy, inexpensive
I was looking for an inexpensive, lightweighy, collapsible rod to take on an upcoming hiking trip. After looking at several options, I chose this one simply because it was the cheapest, and I didn't plan on getting much use out of it. Straight out of the pack, this little rod impressed me. It's lightweight, but it seems sturdy enough. The bale and the gears were a little stiff, but they've been getting better with use. So far, I've caught several fish ranging from a few ounces to around 2 lbs. The 2 lb catfish had the rod, which is already a little "whippy", bent completely over into the water, but it did not break. This reel and rod combo might find a permanent spot in my fishing arsenal, if only to keep in the work truck for an impromptu fishing break. ... show more

  • Great Rod! - Useless Reel
This rod performs great! Tucked it into a bag during a boat ride and reeled in dozens of bass, crappie, sunfish and pickerel. Ultralight rod, but that makes for a fun fight. Reel felt like it was full of sand- skip this if you can! **update 9/2022** I could not be happier with this rod! I’ve caught trout in Yosemite, caught large mouth in New York. This little rod just won’t quit!! So easy to carry and the durability far exceeds my expectation. Not as good as a standard rod- but has given me many opportunities!! ... show more

  • Just the right size
Eagle Claw is a great company, when it comes to rods and hooks durable and sharp.

  • Great packable rod, absolutely garbage reel
The rod is really great as a pack rod - I use it primarily for backpacking and bikepacking, and the telescoping design is much more efficient than a fully break-apart 4 or 5 piece travel rod. The rod is better protected too from other stuff in the pack, and the rod feel is actually really good, despite the price. The reel, however, is an atrocious piece of garbage. It might also have something to do with the cheap line that comes with it, but it was tangle city the whole time. I had a 2nd rod (identical) with a Pflueger President, and that one never tangled or anything, while I was constantly untangling the Eagle Claw reel. Just buy the rod, the reel belongs in the deepest pit known to humanity. ... show more

  • My "Ultralight" Rig.
It's been years since I've had an ultralight spinning rod and reel. I recently decided to shop around and see what was available. This rod and reel caught my attention because of the price, and brand name. I grew up in the 1970s with Eagle Claw rods and couldn't resist the nostalgia. The size 10 reel and 5 foot 6 inch rod will work just fine for any of my ultralight spinning needs. Upon arrival I took the reel apart and put a drop of oil here and there. I also added a plastic end cap to the foam handle of the rod to suit my own personal taste. I'm completely satisfied with this budget-friendly Eagle Claw combo as my ultralight spinning rig. ... show more

  • Absolute Trash
Got this to throw in a backpack for when I'm out driving and find a fishing spot I want to try. That being said, my planed usage for this rod reel combo was minimum at best. I pulled it out of the package the other night and tied up a practice plug to play with the cat in the living room, just to try it out (winter no place to fish other then for CAT.....fish). The first cast (about 10-15 feet with 1/2 oz plug) half of the line blew out of the reel and birdsnested before the first eye on the rod. So my thought process was to throw some braid on it seeing as it wouldn't get much use, and I don't want to have to deal with a birdsnest every time I want to use it after sitting for who knows how long. Well the next day after spooling up some braid, I went outside to try it in my yard. After about 8 casts out, the bailer broke. It no longer stays open when you flip it, and if it does, as soon as you cast it, it flips back closed during the cast. I couldn't be more dissatisfied with this whole thing. I was very excited for it because I prefer glass/composite or graphite rods, and this was the only fiberglass collapsible pole I could find at the time. This is the second Eagle Claw product I have bought in the last 6 months that I have had to return because it broke or I was unsatisfied with it. ... show more
