Taken out twice now. I fish with crankbaits, spoons and spinners only. First try was as the rod came setup out of the blister pack. It had 8lb line already spooled. The line had taken on so much memory that it floated on the water, and since it was so heavy I had a hard time getting my 1/8 lures out there far. Not a single bite that day. On day 2 I disassembled the reel, lubricated the bearings and bail pivot points to which made a noticeable difference in smoothness. I discarded the 8lb line and spooled it with Stren 4lb. Day 2 was productive. I was able to catch 2 dink rainbows, about 8 inches each give or take an inch. I noticed the action is very similar to my Shakespeare Micro Ultralight, in that its very flexible and sort of whippy. It takes a good wind up to launch spoons, however I found with a little practice I could one hand preload cast fairly far. Not as powerfully as my medium action Cirrus, but it certainly worked. The reel drag has no locking clicks so it constantly came loose during casts and I lost a bite due to the drag free spooling. Overall I had 2 wind knots to cut out, and one infinity knot that pulled line from the spool in 2 different places. Had to cut that too. But, for the price and how how compact the system is, it is perfect for my intended use, which is a dedicated Jeep rod to stash under the seat in case I come across some waters on a whim. It catches fish! One thing I wish it had would be a tip protector sleeve, something to hold the rod in the closed position. Right now I run a rubber band through the top eyelet and attach it to the reel arm. Pretty awesome setup for cheap, and with some new line its all good. Not sure id ever need anything more than 4 lb on this rod, its very flexible. 5 stars because this is under 20 dollars for a setup that catches fish. ... show more

Over the years, I have somehow become the go-to guy for all things fishing related by my friends and family. As a result, I have put together several fishing kits here on Amazon for said friends and family. I have purchased and/or gifted upwards of SEVEN of this particular rod and reel combo and keep one in my car at all times as well. Having used and/or witnessed this item being on a very regular basis I can say with great confidence that you will not be disappointed by purchasing this combo. Even if you decide to upgrade or swap the reel in the future, the rod alone is worth the money and you can purchase it separately here on Amazon Eagle Claw Pack-It Telescopic Spinning Rod, 5-Feet x 6-Inch if you have no use for the reel for a few bucks less. I have used several different telescoping rods in the past and have never had a problem with any of them...this one would appear no different in that regard as I expect them to last for many more years to come. Plus, they pack up SO SMALL that I find myself bringing my rod/reel with me on a much more regular basis...backpacking, kayaking, you name it...this baby rides with me wherever I go! ... show more

    • set your drag way on the light side
Years ago eagle claw rods were some of the toughest on the market, now days, not so much. This is a nice looking rod, just very flimsy. With care it should give years of service. The reel was not acceptable but I have many reels collected over the years. Do not try to lift fish out of water with rod, use a net. It casts well with a 3/8th ounce lure. Just be sure to set the drag low or I am afraid the pole will snap. I am also thinking of replacing the guides, the ones on the pole look a bit flimsy. All in all, it looks good and works well. I am glad I bought it. I went back and put the reel back on the pole to make this a fair review. The reel is very cheap and the drag setting screw loosens its self while reeling in the very cheap and kinky line. I did want to be fair but my opinion has not changed and I put one of my reels back on. ... show more

I love how compact the rod is and how much action this rod has. I have another one I bought 2 years ago that is black that I love. I don't care for the reel that comes with it. It feels cheap and not smooth at all. I have another reel that I bought that is 15 bearings that is smooth as butter. I believe the reel that comes with this combo is maybe a 1-bearing. NO comparison. For me, the rod alone is worth the money. Overall, I would recommend this rod! ... show more

Haven't fished with it yet, but the rod seems to be well made. The reel is not very good and is not very smooth compared to reels with more ball bearings, but at this price it is fine. Very compact, portable and lightweight for traveling.

This is the 2nd pack it fishing rod I bought. The first is still working flawlessly and I've had it over 3 years. I bought a 2nd rod as a stocking stuffer for my oldest son to keep in his jeep for slow days at college. Needless to say the newest rod/reel arrived on time without delay and package in perfect condition. The second time we extended the rod the end literally snapped between the 2nd and 3rd eye. So, first rig was awesome second one garbage. 500 is great in baseball but not in customer satisfaction. I will be contacting the company but I am not holding my breath. Update: no response from the company, pass on this garbage. Don’t waste your hard earned $$$. ... show more

It's been years since I've had an ultralight spinning rod and reel. I recently decided to shop around and see what was available. This rod and reel caught my attention because of the price, and brand name. I grew up in the 1970s with Eagle Claw rods and couldn't resist the nostalgia. The size 10 reel and 5 foot 6 inch rod will work just fine for any of my ultralight spinning needs. Upon arrival I took the reel apart and put a drop of oil here and there. I also added a plastic end cap to the foam handle of the rod to suit my own personal taste.
