  • Good quality strings but they feel a little "off"
Style: String Bass
These strings sound really good on my 5-string bass, but there's just something about them that feels a little "off" to me. They are a hand-wound string, which sounds great, but it means that there are little inconsistencies throughout the strings. They don't feel as good or as playable as the Ernie Ball Super Slinkies flatwounds on my 4-string. I got these simply because they would get here in time for a show. Now I wish I had stuck with my Ernie's. ... show more

  • Feel and sound like Flatwound Strings!
Style: String Bass
There were a few places on the packaging that said “brighter” sounding flats but sound like regular flats to me. I went with these flats simply because they gauge and also that I’ve had DR Strings before. Not disappointed but I wouldn’t say this strings are bright at all. I’ll be uploading a demo video to this product to so check that out. I play slab, pick, and finger style. They are quality strings, I’ll say that. I’ll also attach some pictures to this review. This is definitely a playable gauge, no fret buzz which is a huge pro. Over all, happy with my purchase but they probably drop the price on this a little. I think anything over $30 is asking for too much. But that’s all personally opinion. Along with the rest of this review. I was also surprised to find out that this strings have gold threading on both ends of every string, which didn’t turn out level on my bass but that’s a minor detail. I’ll include a picture of that as well. One thing that did get to me though, is that the last two strings(D&G) sounded much brighter than the other 3. So it sounds weird going from D string to A. That’s my only real complaint about this set, I’ll write an update on this later if I notice anything change over time. My other DR Strings seem so mellow out over the span of a few months so we’ll see how these do. And one last thing, the treading on the B string is not holding up, which you can see in the photo of the headstock. Not very pretty to look at. ... show more

  • Not for me
Style: String Bass
I always use Rotosounds on my Gibson but I wanted flat-wounds for my Fodera 5 string and these came highly recommended. These strings have an unusually large wrap over area at the bottom that is covered by a sort of fabric thread. This makes the string too large to fit through the hole on the bridge.I ended up enlarging the hole on the "E" and A" strings. While tuning and setting the intonation ( I had to lower the action ) the "G" string broke. So here I sit on New Years Eve unable to play my bass since music stores are closed on Sunday and on New Years day tomorrow. My extra set of strings is a set of Rotosound Swing Bass although I have never broken a string before in 45 years of playing bass. Now I have to try and find a dealer with individual, flat wound bass strings on Tuesday. Lesson learned. I don't know if these strings would have fit without modification on my faithful Gibson. That bridge is different but the strings must pass through the body. When I played for a few minutes on the 'E,A,D" strings they felt nice and had the less bright sound I was seeking. The active PUPs don't need help on the high end. I wanted more of a roar than a thud but I will need to wait until I have a full set to play with to decide if the $38.00 was wasted. ... show more

  • Nice strings, but won't fit your 35" scale through-body bass
Style: String Bass
These are good sounding strings. They compare nicely to Chromes and Fender flats. They have a consistent tone between strings, and enough tension for solid-sounding E and B. Also, they have attractive gold windings at both ends. However, if you have a 35" scale bass with through-body bridge, these are NOT long enough. You will end up stringing through the back of the bridge. Therefore, I would not recommend these for Lakland 5's. I contacted DR and asked them directly if the strings would fit 35" through-body bridge basses, and they told me they would. NOT CORRECT. ... show more

  • Absolutely Smooth!
Style: String Bass
I just replace half-round strings with this set of stainless DR flatwounds. These strings are so much better, they are absolutely smooth and play like butter. On the half-rounds my fingers would sometimes stick instead of slide because they were slightly rough. These DR's have a very bright, consistent sound, even the G string. Although they are very new the fact they are stainless should mean they will last a long time, plus because they are flatwound there should be less dirt getting in the string grooves. The price of about $35 seems reasonable especially because bass strings last so long. If anything negative shows up in the next few months I will return and revise this review. ... show more

  • My new string of choice
Style: String Bass
Very smooth. These have a nice warm sound. The strings are very quiet for church but can carry a lot of volume if needed. I use them at church where excess noise is a distraction. I find these to be better than Earnie Ball flatwounds. Highly recommended.

  • Fantastic
Style: String Bass
Got a 5-string P-Bass and wanted that old school vibe, too. These are awesome for that. No complaints except that they give you instructions on how to trim the string down first before installing on the INSIDE of the package. I already did my normal string winding and trimming and saw that, which is to prevent dead strings and "slipping", as flat wounds are manufactured different than round wounds. Keep that in mind! ... show more
