  • I'm Conflicted
Some guys call my F150 a "classic". IDK abt that. I'm a boomer and to me a '65 GTO is a modern times classic. If i really stretch, maybe an '82 Hilux is a classic. Mine is just an old truck. But it's a good old truck. It's clean and straight, no rust, doesn't leak a drop of fluid. It's made mostly of metal. I want to preserve it in this condition because maybe someday, for my grandkids it will be a classic. So it was with reluctance and no small amount of regret, that i went tearing up the dashboard with a Dremel. Because, my truck sits high and i really wanted a reliable reverse camera to help me avoid killing people or backing over Mini Coopers. They're also useful for backing up to trailers or whatever work is at hand. A double DIN in-dash display is the most effective and unobtrusive way to accomplish this. I'd seen the before and after photos, and i'd steeled myself to accept this alteration as a necessary evil. The thing is.., well.,, it's two things: It's 50 bucks. And it's plastic. The faceplate is perfectly fine being plastic. It rather nicely matches the black plastic of my instrument panel. Where i balked was the flimsiness of the mounting brackets. I suppose, when everything is snapped into place the head unit is pretty much leveraged into place. I mean if you carefully align everything then the mounting brackets clip to the faceplate which, if firmly butted to the dash, seems to hold it all pretty solid. It's really rather ingenious. It's just that before you do that, the head unit is suspended from two wiggly bits of plastic. It doesn't inspire confidence and i'm gonna be just a bit more thoughtful about taking off 4-wheeling in the desert. I'd prefer the mounts to have been stamped metal. Also, since these plastic mounts are thicker than stamped metal would be, you *need* tapered screw heads so that they will fit flush. Else your new radio won't fit in the hole and you'll be cutting even more dashboard. Finally i ask y'all to consider... your truck is already old. It's possible and even likely you will do some plastic welding and creative fabrication because bits of your dash came off when you dismantled everthing, and you need certain of those bits to accomplish this job. Then consider, this kit is also plastic. Most of the rest of your truck is metal, and will probably still be around another 30 years from now. Will they still be making these? Or even eight years from now if you go to replace the head unit with something more modern than that old 2020's stuff, and in the process you snap off the mounting tabs. Might be a good idea to buy a spare. Which is $100 worth of plastic. Don't get me wrong. I am grateful that someone looked at mid-90's Ford trucks and wondered about the feasibility of installing a double DIN stereo. I'm grateful they went ahead and did it. I'm grateful that they manufactured a kit, rather than just uploading a file that's useless to those of us without 3D printers. And, i am pleased with the results. I'm just still conflicted, even having done it. ... show more

  • Great upgrade to an OBS ford pickup
I used this kit to install a double din Android based head unit and it was easy to install and works great. There is another much much higher priced option, but for me this has worked great. The mounting of the radio mount is not perfect, but there are no other places to connect it. The only improvement I could suggest is a metal frame for the mounting plates. ... show more

  • Fits like a glove with ease
Was super nervous to hack up my dash in fear of the radio sitting crooked or unevenly, but with <2 hours of cutting and fitting, it went in seamlessly! Check YouTube for the videos since the instructions leave something to be desired
