  • High quality, smooth running die grinder.
This larger die grinder runs very smoothly in use. There's virtually no vibration. Paddle switch with the safety trigger is a bit cumbersome to use, but is much safer. Grinder cannot turn on if set down on the bench. Note that this die grinder, like most others, runs at 25,000 rpm. Always use a face shield and hearing protection. If your grinding stone has any sign of chips or cracks, throw it away. At 25,000 rpm, the stone sees very high G-loads and could come apart explosively if the stone is damaged. Always run the grinder for a short time before using to check the stone. This tool is heavier than some but very well made. Recommended. ... show more

  • On unit #3, seem ok
First one shipped worked well until it died in less than 4 hours of use. The replacement also worked well until it too died in less than 4 hours of use. Attempting to contact manufacturer now for resolution. They did not appear to heat up; did not drive them hard - simple grinding work with breaks for the tool. In the meantime I'll need to find a working solution for grinding. *Updated 11/05/2017 Manufacturer exchanged for a new one at their facility (35 min away, but worth it) The new unit has been working like a champ for a couple months now. Knock on wood it keeps going. I like using the grinder when it's working. ... show more

  • Looks good so far.
My unit is “Made in the USA with global materials”. I am interested in the 1-1/2 inch diameter because I am trying to do a cut of a bushing of a lower control arm of my Ford pickup. The bolt in the bushing is seized and major surgery in a tight space is necessary to get the bolt to release, and a guard would make it very difficult to get in there to do the cut, so I wanted an 1-1/2 inch cut off wheel and am leaning to the Lenox 1972914 MetalMax. That wheel is made of steel encrusted around the edge with diamond, and that seems to be a sturdier material than some of the compositions used in other wheels. Somewhere I had read that the Lenox wheel is limited to about 10,000 rpm but another review of the wheel specifications shows it is good to more than 40,000 rpm. Robert Hart’s helpful reply to the reason for the “1-1/2 inch” part the die grinder’s description means I should not have to use a guard to do the cut. This has been a real education in terminology for me, with “mandrel”, “arbor”, “shank”, and “collet” being freely thrown around in sales and discussion literature. ... show more

  • I like this grinder a lot
This tool takes all the abuse and keeps on working. I have used many different brands and even tried to go cheap at harbor freight. Harbor Frieght grinder lasted 5 days. i kid you not. This grinder lasts 2 years through heavy work. Cutting, drilling, smoothing. Has great torque and reliability. Dewalt even makes a bigger one that is an absolute monster if this doesnt have enough power for you. i like the brand and the tools ... show more

  • very quiet
I chuck this up with some carbide bits and use it almost exclusively for grinding out bad welds. It's quite large in size, but having the handle located right near the tip gives you a lot of control. I'm mostly impressed with how remarkably quiet it is. That alone is enough of a reason to switch from the air-powered alternatives. Tip: It's easy to get a carbide bit to walk/chatter and then break. You can reduce your chances of that happening if you are firm and steady with your material removal. It helps to grab it with a second hand right at the BLACK handle near the bit. ... show more

  • Good product
It's quality but sent it back. I've been using the 40 dollar harbor freight die grinder and those burn up after 2 hours of use in my experience and while I would expect this Dewalt to be better its not worth the investment

  • Industrial Sized Metal Carving Dremel on Steriods!
Finally got a workable die grinder after my Makita fiasco! Solid but not overly heavy on the hands. What impressed me the most is the mechanics of this thing. When you plug it in and engage the paddle switch, the motor is rather quiet and smooth. The bearings must be the best I found in any power tool! This is the die grinder to die for! When you buy this you get the tool and two chuck wrenches and owners manual. That is about it. A really simple tool to set up go! ... show more

  • ... these about 10 years ago and didn't have very good luck with them
We had tried one of these about 10 years ago and didn't have very good luck with them, so we switched to using the Makita equivalent at our shop. We run two grinders, generally pretty hard two or three times a week. Here are experience having used two Makitas for the past 5 years and now a Dewalt again for the past half a year: Makitas: I would say they generally last 4-6mo before stopping. 1yr warranty so I took advantage of that for a year. always went smooth. The cause: It's ALWAYS been either the field $15 (Normally just because of worn wires which I repair a few times until it becomes to difficult) or the Switch $13. Those are the ONLY things I've had to replace over the past 5 years This Dewalt: We purchased this 9mo ago and it's already made 4 trips to be fixed. About half that time has been down time as, though we've never had a problem with warranty going through, it seems to take them 3-4 weeks to get it back. I think our record is having it burn up in 1 week after getting it back from warranty. Every time it says they've replaced the ARMATURE ASSEMBLY $32 and sometimes the switch and brushes. So once warranty runs out in a couple months, I'll have to spend $32 every few months to keep this thing running. It also runs way hotter than the Makitas on heavy use, which is probably whats burning them up. It felt so promising and smooth at first, Might be okay for light use but for heavy users,, Be warned... ... show more
