  • Get the 15 aH battery.
I have a 9 amp hour, 12 amp hour, and 15 amp hour battery. The 15 amp hour batteries are definitely the way to go. I have felled about 8 pine trees ranging from 6 - 16 inches and it did a great job with the undercut, felling, and then limbing the timber. I was able to cut several oak logs easily. As the saw cuts, the battery heats up and the saw automatically cuts off if it gets too hot. If you swap the battery you can immediately start cutting again. This was the only frustrating thing as you might still have 2 of 3 green dots on the battery but it get too warm to keep sawing. Altogether, the torque on this saw is amazing for its size. That, combined with the low-pro chain means it goes through wood very quickly. Definitely comparable to a gas saw of similar size. You don't need ear protection and it starts EVERY TIME YOU PULL THE TRIGGER. ... show more

  • BUY THE WARRANTY!!! My DCCS677Y1 lasted 1 year. Got it fixed under warranty.
Update 15 Jan 2025 I've cut 5 truck loads of Ash logs with this saw. Once again it is my go-to saw. I have 2 DeWalt batteries, and one knock-off battery, two chargers and a 12V to 120V inverter. When one battery runs low, I charge it in the truck. The knock-off battery was cheap, but not very good, so I'll likely return it. = = = = = = = = Update 29 October 2024 I sent my DCCS677Y1 in for warranty repair. I was weeks beyond 1 year. DeWalt sent me a remanufactured saw. This is awesome! Upgrading to 5 stars. = = = = = = = I loved this saw. I probably got 30-40 hours of use. No ear protection needed! Motor was powerful and the chain was decent. Now it the saw starts intermittently. I called the authorized dealer and he told me that repair was likely a bad investment. If you are a light residential user, this saw might be OK, but again, buy the warranty (and those Asurion warranties are not hassle free, but better than nothing). ... show more

  • Not nearly as touchy as people claim...
I immediately took this saw out and cut down a small red oak (dead - but NOT rotted) with about a 16 inch diameter, at the base. It only bogged out one me once as one section, that was not supported, began to pinch the blade. Outside of that, it was still raring to go and didn't overheat or stall out on me. So, at least in my experience, I saw no issue with battery charge or overheating that some complain of. (Granted, it was September in the "middle latitudes" and, only about 81(F) degrees outside during this "test") Now for the bad part. Sure as ___, just as many users pointed out, first time I used the saw, first time I turned the tensioner, the gear stripped (see pictures). Thankfully, the saw is extremely easy to service (at least that part is) and Dewalt support was great. They sent me a picture of all the parts asking me to identify the damaged parts and then, no other questions asked, sent me two sets of the newer design. ((**FYI - Anyone needing the upgraded Dewalt gears, Dewalt lists them as Part No.#NA304068 "Gear SA" and #NA231996 "Gear"**)) Also the blade... It's sharp and cuts fast. It is also soft, easily dulls (I hit a piece of wire fence that I was unaware was embedded in the second tree I started cutting and saw quite the display of sparks). After a BRIEF hit to the wire fence the blade IMMEDIATELY lost its bite. Because of that, I found it is not so easy to find the exact blade to order to replace it. It may be easier to find a whole new bar/chain assembly (I despise sharpening chainsaw blades). I may update this post later after I deal with the blade issue - but at least that was MY fault, not Dewalt's. ... show more

  • Pretty impressive for a battery saw
Saw wasn't lasting long, was overheating the battery before battery was low. Dewalt sent me a replacement battery. Still had issues. Saw was cutting a little crooked and I noticed the chain seemed dull on one side, which surprised me, as I hadn't done but a few test cuts. So, sharpened the chain with the included file. Fixed the crooked cuts AND the battery issue. ... show more

  • Okay but not great or a stihl
It cut good once that was about it. Needs a better chain. I also think the 12inch dewalt chainsaw cut faster and better with a 60v battery on it but tore it up and broke after heavy use. Haven't tried the 16. Can not find a 20inch dewalt chainsaw replacement chain at any retail stores or on Amazon not sure what to do with it now..wall ornament in tool shed? Really wish I had gone with a gas one... electric just isn't there with anything yet. ELECTRIC cars/tools are like your childhood toys. They are cool and look nice but like the toy they won't work for long before you just throw it away ... show more

  • Batteries ARE NOT adequate for the saw
If you're planning on this saw cutting like a gas powered 20 inch chainsaw you might want to have 20-30 batteries around. A 12 AH battery will power the saw for 8-10 minutes of cutting before quitting, material doesn't matter. Less with smaller batteries. It works well when it's cutting, but the saw is just over powered for the batteries. Dewalt is asking too much out of the small batteries. BTW, I have a 16 inch Dewalt chainsaw with a 40 volt 6 AH battery (2x the size of the 60/20 batteries) that will run an hour. I've cut three 16" green oak trees into 20" pieces on one battery. But Dewalt discontinued the 40 volt line of tools to go with 60/20 flex volt. This new saw will not even come close to the performance of the "old technology". The reason I give it one star is that as stated it cuts well when running. It just doesn't run for very long. Disappointed. ... show more

  • over heats and stops easy.
I've owned this saw now for about 9 months. used it several times in early fall and winter. took it back out this may, the saw seem to over heat the battery way to fast. can't cut a 8 inch maple. tried all the lager batteries i have(3 12 AH) the chain is sharp. now i have a grand in saw and batteries that won't cut wood. I'm very very disapointed and stuck with a wirthless saw. ... show more
