  • Versatile despite being mostly intended for automotive use
The media could not be loaded. I needed this light BADLY since circumstances have forced me to work on my own vehicle in an unlit parking lot. Waiting for a day off that isn’t raining during daylight hours often doesn’t work out for me. I stubbornly waited to find it for under $100 and regret not biting earlier at $125. There are Craftsman, Mac Tools, and Greenworks (?!) versions of essentially the same folding under hood light as the DeWALT. I’ve got several DeWALT 20V Max tools and their batteries work with either the DeWALT or the Mac version. I wasn’t about to pay the tool truck tax for Mac so I waited for a deal on the DeWALT version. I find that it’s the perfect tool for making use of smaller capacity batteries you might have kicking around. You can charge one while you use the other and you won’t suffer reduced performance like you might with a tool that draws a lot of amps. It does not have the option of powering from an external source (car battery, AC adapter, USB, etc) but that’s expected. It’s super-bright and, unlike the other versions, you can turn off the side you aren’t using to save power or reduce glare. Like the others it can stand when folded and you can hang it like a lantern. Hanging from the rafters is going to come in really useful when I wire up lights in the shed! I tried it on the hood, interior between the driver and passenger windows, and on the liftgate. I also attached it to the garage door and framing in an unfinished basement. I already used it unconventionally when working in an unlit washroom (see pics). Supporting 12V Max on the same tool is interesting since even the Mac Tools version doesn’t do that despite both using the same DeWALT 20V Max batteries. It’s the only tool I have that supports 12V Max but I’ve been on the fence about a DeWALT 12V Max ratchet. Having this to share batteries just might tip the scales for me, especially since they share the same chargers. By waiting for a deal I paid less than a third the price of the Mac Tools version. Compared to Mac, the DeWALT is cheaper, brighter, and lets you turn off one side. The only missing feature I’d want is the Mac’s auto-on/off motion sensor but not at the price the Mac tool truck is asking. Heck, I might even be able to partially approximate that: the DeWALT DCE040 Tool Connect 20V Max Connector can disable an attached tool when out of Bluetooth range, though it’s intended as a security feature. The Mac version’s detachable handheld flashlight doesn’t appeal to me since I’d be charging an integrated battery off of an expensive battery and wearing out both for a task better served by a freebie flashlight. Each version has some small difference to distinguish from one another, so maybe it would be useful to compare: $149 MSRP Craftsman Model CMCL090 Brightness levels: 2 (600/1,200 lumens) Compatible battery: Craftsman V20 Max (not included) Extra features: None. Note: No longer available at retail. $179 MSRP DeWALT Model DCL045 Brightness levels: 2 (800/1,700 lumens) Compatible batteries: 12/20/60V Max, FlexVolt (not included) Extra features: Only variant that can turn off one side. Note: Brightest. $309 MSRP Mac Tools Model MCL045 Brightness levels: 2 (600/1,350 lumens) + aux Compatible battery: 20V Max (not included) Extra features: Motion sensor (auto on/off) and detachable 80 lumen handheld auxiliary flashlight (charges from main unit). Note: Supports DeWALT 20V Max batteries but NOT 12V Max. $130 MSRP Greenworks Model PA7210K/WLG907 Brightness levels: 3 (400/800/1,200 lumens) Compatible battery: Greenworks 24V (2AH included) Extra features: Only one a available in a kit with battery and charger. Note: The second model number (from the manual) is likely for the bare tool. I found these variants while waiting for a deal but perhaps I missed some. With one variant (Greenworks) outside the Stanley-Black & Decker corporate brand umbrella, I have to assume none are engineered by SBD… despite other reviews here praising “DeWALT’s” design and engineering. That’s not bad. There’s a reason SBD released the expensive Mac Tools professional version first: It’s great, and they know it! I saw some complaints about the lenses scratching easily so I left my packing/smudge film on for now. Mac Tools specifically touts replaceable lenses in their video ad but there is nothing about that in the manual and no lens on their parts site. Maybe we have to ask the guy on the Mac Tools truck! I did, however, find the DeWALT part number: NA162972 “LENS” …about $12 at SBD’s “ToolServiceNet” portal. I saw others concerned that the unlit hinge will create a shadow in the middle of your work area but I found that the beams converge very close to the unit. I hung it under my hood, placed my hand directly under the center of the unit, and lowered it. My hand was only inches away when it became at least as bright as it would be on either side. As you move further down the light spreads even more. At $99 on sale, I couldn’t be happier with the DeWALT version… even knowing I missed the $37 clearance Craftsman version back when I still had a compatible 6AH V12 Max Craftsman battery. Oh well. If you are already in one of the many supported DeWALT battery lines and you can find a similar deal, you won’t be disappointed! ... show more

  • Awesome light!
I really love this light! It has made car repair possible during the winter, when days are short, and also, when extra light is needed for work in the engine bay. I have had the light for a couple of days and I have already used it for 12+ hrs. I like the I can cycle through my dewalt 20v batteries to keep it running. Conveniently, the batteries last long enough, on the highest brightness setting, to fully charge a fresh 20v battery. This is great, because with just two batteries swapped between the charger and the light, you can keep this thing going for as long as you need, and have all your extra batteries free for your ratchets and impacts! For some users, there are a few downsides. The light does not include batteries or a charger, so if you aren’t already using DeWalt 20v tools, by the time you buy a charger and some batteries, the light will get very expensive. Another con is that the light is heavy and most cars’ hood-struts won’t support it. If you are already on the DeWalt platform, this is a great light and is versatile beyond work under the hood. ... show more

  • A car enthusiast's new friend❤️
Hello all!If you've seen me around other products before you know I have something good to tell you about this one😁This product uses 12 or 20 volt dewalt batteries and uses LED bulbs to shine a super bright light!Whats nifty about this one is it's flexibility. You can bend it,turn the hands, and turn on one light, dim light,or full light and offers a nice hands-free experience for when you're working late on that project car.Even tho this says Hood light you can use it for other scenarios as well.Just the other night I actually used this and hung it on my shed shelf when I couldn't find my flashlight! Please try it out you will not be disappointed!Highly recommend! ... show more

  • The perfect light
Finally a quality tool to illuminate the engine bay. There never seems to be any place to hang or set a typical light that lights up the area your working on - until this. The hooks loop over your hood (very soft to mar the finish) with both ends being able to extend out to fit whatever vehicle your working on (under tension to keep a tight hold on your hood). Plenty of light to illuminate whatever area of the engine bay you need. The hooks also rotate 180 degrees on both ends; so you set on the ground to illuminate up if needed - found it just as useful under the vehicle ... show more

  • Nice addition to the garage workshop
Light is bright and it is nice to just change out the batteries as needed. Spreads out light under the hood nicely. Handy that it can be dimmed and choose both sides or one side. A little heavy for some hood shocks but just added an adjustable mechanic's hood prop to the collection for that.
