I obsessively watch videos online of people out treasure hunting with metal detectors. I don’t know why it never occurred to me that I am a grown-up with grown-up money and I could do it myself, but it didn’t. And I guess that part of that might be that I am Gen X and it was kind of a dorky thing that weird adults did. But I am now that weird adult and I am SO FLIPPING EXCITED! The property we live on was the location of a house that burned down and I am excited to see what sorts of treasures I can find. So far, what I have discovered is that there is STUFF in the ground but the ground is very hard and rocky and I need digging equipment that is more substantial than the plastic trowel and rake included in this set. I think they would be perfect for beach or sandy ground, but they just don’t hold up against the rocky terrain. I will upgrade those, but in the meantime I plan on heading down to the river bank to see what drunken boaters have lost! I will be sure to post a picture of every wedding and class ring I find. This is my first metal detector so I’m not really sure how to compare it, but I can tell you that the design is very clever. Being able to fold it up for travel and storage is dynamite. It is lightweight and very portable. The bag is a nice touch, although the bright orange “Metal Detector” on it kind of outs me as the nerd that I am. I chose this particular detector because it uses AA batteries and I can use the rechargeable batteries I already own. I don’t know how quickly it drains the batteries, but being able to keep a supply of fresh batteries on hand seems preferable to running out of charge when out the hunt. Overall, I am very pleased with this device and feel like it is the perfect introduction to a hobby that I have wanted to try for years. ... show more

This is a nice detector. got it for my son for Christmas and we have been playing with it around the house and the basement. It is MN and winter with no beach to go test it on. However this was fun to play with. I have rubber mats around my basement as well and rugs and foam mats etc. I threw coins around and under things and this was able to identify the metal. Not always reading the "metal" type accurately but worked. This also was able to test it through multi depth gym mat and was able to test it down to various depths which we were able to get it to 4" but not deeper. This detects well and comes with a lot of extras, sovel, rake, headphones, bag. It all collapses down quick and easy and it runs off 4 AA batteries. This is a nice device and also has multiple sensativity levels. Fun gift. ... show more

Pros: Decent construction, definitely finds metal, waterproof, lightweight, only needs 4 AA batteries, comes with headphones, can be set to ignore certain metals such as iron Cons: says aluminum is silver, arm strap/brace thingy is poorly designed, pole is short for tall people, locking mechanisms are extremely tight and hard to press. One would be tempted to get this as a kid's first metal detector. They will definitely find things but it's very frustrating when it says silver but you dig up an old aluminum can. This may quickly quench the child's enthusiasm for the wonderful sport of treasure hunting. Maybe there's subtle sound clues to indicate when real silver or gold has been found, but experimenting with known pieces of jewelry didn't reveal any audio differences. I'd take this to a beach but not anywhere cluttered with litter. ... show more

This metal detector is very space saving. It is better than the other set I had. It comes with headphone, shovel, storage bag. It can fit in my backpack easily. I have taken it to beach couple of time and my seven year old is able to use it with minimum help to locate metal. I like how light the detector it is. Once she knows how to operate the metal detector, she is good on her own. We did take the headphone with us, so she can hear it better. The detector beeps when it detects metal. Unfortunately, All we have found on the beach is trash so far. It is going to be our on the go toy, so my daughter can enjoy using the detector to explore new places. ... show more
