  • In almost every respect, Amo strings were worse than Zyex strings (their sibling composites from DAddario). What's the point?
Style: Medium Tension Size: Full Set
Please note that every violin responds differently to different strings, so my experience may be totally different from yours. However, in this case, I really don't see what justifies the price on these strings. I gave the Kaplan Amo strings a week of hard playing in hopes that they would improve with age, and then I took them off (they didn't improve). They are formulated similarly to Zyex (also from DAddario), but supposedly are fancier and more expensive. They were indeed very similar to Zyex in some respects, including a similar sound, especially on the A string. However, they were significantly worse than Zyex in several ways, on my fiddle. The Amo strings were much less responsive. This includes being slow to speak under most circumstances, especially on the D and G strings, and not responsive enough to play quietly (well, you can play quietly on them, but they sound terrible under most reasonable attempts to do this). In contrast, Zyex strings on my fiddle have had incredibly fast response, and a decent dynamic range. Also, even more concerning, the Kaplan Amos that I tried had very weak D and G strings. They totally lacked any kind of power. In contrast, the Zyex strings I've tried in the past have had an awesome boom and growl on the low end when you want it, and smooth velvety power when you want it. In short: If you haven't tried Zyex yet (the *new* formulation of Zyex strings from the past few years), try them before Kaplan Amo - you may save a lot of money in the long run for a better overall experience. I'd also like to mention the advertising point they make that Kaplan Amos are supposed to be warm, to compliment a bright fiddle. I did not find that to be so. They actually seemed a little on the bright side. I've used Obligatos and Larsen Tzigane strings for powerful warmth on this fiddle, and they worked fabulously. Kaplan Amo did not. But, of course, your milage may vary. Who knows; maybe I got a dud set of strings? ... show more

  • They asked really quickly and the sound is amazing.
Style: Medium Tension Size: Full Set
I really like how quickly they settled in and stayed in tune. I could hear a great improvement in tone.

  • Pricy but worth it
Style: Heavy Tension Size: Full Set
When breaking them in, the sound is kind of too bright but after a couple of hours of playing they settled in nicely and I feel like they have a more dark and rounder sound than my last pair (Heliocore by D’Addario). I’m loving these strings. Honestly, the price is a bit too high for my pocket but they really are worth the price. I’m going to be sticking to these strings for a while. ... show more

  • Excellent sound and wonderful playability
Style: Medium Tension Size: Full Set
Really love these strings. They definitely darkened the sound of my violin, which is what I was hoping for. Never having used these strings before, I wasn't prepared for how stretchy they are, and I ended up snapping my bridge in half during the initial tuning. I'm willing to chalk that one up to user inexperience and an old bridge. The strings do take several days to settle and stay in tune, so I wouldn't put these on right before a performance. On my instruments, all of the strings sound great and I didn't have to sub any out. ... show more

  • These are the best!!
Style: Medium Tension Size: Full Set
These strings are amazing - and sound great for a lot more hours of playing than most other strings we’ve found.

  • Smooth sound
Style: Medium Tension Size: E String
The string was exactly as expected. Easy to string and lovely, less brassy, sound.

  • They are incredibly responsive and really just a joy to play
Style: Medium Tension Size: Full Set
10 year Irish fiddle player Strung on a Ren Wei Shi artisit model I cannot speak highly enough of these strings. My instrument is newer and has a bit of harshness to it but these strings create such a warm tone that it balances out the tone. They are incredibly responsive and really just a joy to play. ... show more
