The book is a little dated, but that really didn't matter; my banjo that I just refurbished is old, too! It's quite detailed, and has invaluable information I used to reconstruct this old Silvertone banjo that I acquired through a friend. I really don't think I would have been able to put all the pieces back together (after an enormous amount of time polishing and cleaning!) to get this banjo back to playing condition. You can probably get a lot of this information online, but it would take some time, and you'd want to have your computer at the ready. I love having a good book of inforamation and diagrams right in front of me while I work. The writing is personal and folksy, and not too technical at all. Enjoyed it - recommended! ... show more

As a novice/ self taught picker, I think book is very helpful. Clearly explained and illustrated. Great when you don't live around the corner from a repair shop, or don't want to spend (or have) the money for what may be simple repairs or adjustments.
