This is my second lantern in a year but I've been using a Coleman lantern all my life including hand-me-down Coleman lanterns from my dad. They have pretty much remained the same since the last century because they work. In Florida, we get some bad hurricanes, some bad enough to knock out power for weeks so this lantern is invaluable, blinding bright if you turn it up or candle soft when turned down. A cup of regular unleaded gas runs all night and the second night as well The best part is, once you own a Coleman lantern, you have it for life and can pass it along to the next generation. I have a few lithium-battery-powered lanterns as well and while they are nice, they'll probably last a couple years before the battery can't recharge. The Coleman lantern will last a couple human generations.

Been using Coleman lanterns since the mid seventies and have never been disappointed. This is a nice smaller format lantern that puts out plenty of usable bright light. This lantern is also not as noisy as some of my older lanterns during operation. The ability to use gasoline is an advantage but I don’t expect to use any fuel except white gas unless there is some type of emergency that makes white gas unavailable. I prefer the Coleman white gas and kerosene lanterns over propane due to the unknown fuel levels that small propane tanks cause, it’s easy to open the liquid fuel tank to check the level. As for the supplied storage case this is the same storage case that Coleman has sold for years, nothing wrong with the storage case you just need to be carful to ensure the tabs are locked before you pick up the storage case. More of a storage case vs a carry case. # 21 Mantles for the lantern are common and easily found in any big box store that has a sporting goods department. Weather this is your first Coleman lantern or like me your 10th you won’t be disappointed with the Coleman duel fuel.

I grew up with Coleman pressure lanterns as the child of missionaries in the South Pacific 3rd World. For years, Coleman pressure lanterns (and a few hurricane lanterns) lit our nights on the other side of the world. These days, as outdoor lovers -- and prepping for emergency power outages, short or long-term -- we decided to add a couple of these lanterns to our equipment. We love the fact that there's been a breakthrough in fuel supply. These also readily burn regular "car" gasoline and that makes them extra useful, and certainly worth a few more bucks. What you save on gasoline by the gallon alone is worth the money (yesterday, the price of a gallon of white gas at my hardware store was $13). In general, with all our equipment, we burn gasoline that is treated with Sea Foam SF-16 Motor Treatment - 16 oz.. This is so much better than the competitors' gasoline treatment-for-storage products, and keeps all your gasoline engines starting and running better. It came to us recommended by a highly experienced small engine mechanic, and our engine headaches largely disappeared after that. We use it regularly in all our equipment, truck and car. Treated gas burns great in this lantern, and I can even leave fuel in the tank, ready to go in an emergency. We bought this with another great "blast from the past" -- the Coleman Guide Series® Powerhouse(TM) Dual Fuel(TM) Stove. It's another classic, now improved by being able to burn gasoline as well. This lanterns comes in a strong hard shell, which makes taking it camping extra-easy. You don't want to break the glass, or shatter the mantles. We have seen the light! Strongly Recommended!

I ask my wife to buy me a Coleman, she did but was a lantern with batteries!!!! I want one like the one I used when I was a boy scout in the 60's. Found it in Amazon, ordered two and now I am a happy camper, works great as I remembered. I use unleaded gas and the only thing to replace are the mantles. Great product and easy to use.

Pattern Name: Fuel Lantern
Lantern is very good. Produces bright, white light. Not super noisy - it's a gas lantern so you do get a big of that jet-engine sound and full tilt, but that's pretty standard. It's certainly not a problem. Seemed to get good fuel efficiency. Runs for many hours on a single tank and I like being able to use multiple fuels - although I've only used white gas so far - it's cheap and readily available but I like to know I could use other fuel in a pinch or disaster situation - that's why I got this version. Case, as other reviewers have indicated is something to be careful of. The bottom latches in via a two protrusions on the base that fit into 2 slots on the case top. Since the case top is thin plastic it could easily bow if pressed on the sides and this could cause the tabs to pop out and then, yes, the bottom would just fall out taking your lantern with it. So, yes, if I were Coleman I'd design a better case. But knowing this, just handle with care. My one problem, was that on my first use, one of the mantles developed a hole as it shrank (they shrink when they burn on first lighting). And what I didn't know then, but do now, is that that created a little jet of heat that cause the globe to crack. If I'd known, I would have replaced the mantle. I haven't been a long-time gas lantern user so this was a learning experience for me. If your mantle is damaged, replace it and I'm sure you'd avoid this issue. I also have had a bit of an issue tracking down the replacement globe. Amazon carries numerous models but seems like there are dozens of Coleman lantern models but most of the globes I'm seeing here and on other camping supply sites don't list this specific lantern model in their compatibility lists. So I'm probably going to have to gamble on the closest one.

I bought this for use in case of emergencies, and for camping. If you've ever used a Coleman lantern before this is exactly what you think it is. The carrying case is strong and holds the lantern in place internally with molded plastic parts. There's some space inside the case to carry additional mantles, and maybe a lighter, but I don't think a fuel funnel would fit. It's a bit harder to light when using gasoline than when using white gas (Coleman fuel) but that's the only difference I've noticed. It's clearly well made, and with the occasional tear-down and cleaning it should last forever. With that said, for a bit more money you can buy a small folding solar panel and some rechargeable LED lanterns/lights that are smaller, lighter, easier to use, and safer, so you can let kids use them without worrying about them setting themselves, the camp site, and/or the house on fire. Pros: - It's just the same as every other white gas Coleman lantern ever, so odds are you already know how to use it. - Gasoline is substantially cheaper than white gas. - Bright, reasonably long run time. The description says 8 hours on one tank, on high, but in my experience it runs far longer than that because the brightness goes down as the tank empties unless you keep pumping it to keep the pressure up. Cons: - It's relatively heavy. - Use extreme caution if you use it indoors. Crack open a window and be sure to have a carbon monoxide detector. - It puts out a lot of heat, so don't use it near anything flammable (tents, trees, curtains, children). - It stinks a bit when it's running, but it's nowhere near as bad as a kerosene lamp. - You're going to break the mantles regularly, so buy some spares. At least the new mantles aren't made out of radioactive thorium. - It doesn't come with a funnel. I use the one that came with my Coleman stove, which is a "Coleman Filtering Funnel" and can be bought separately. - Even with a funnel refueling it is an exercise in spilling fuel everywhere.

This is my second of these lanterns. When I bought my first one in March 2022 it was described as an 861 lumen lantern, now they are described as 700 lumens. I am not sure why they have changed the specified light ouput for the identical model. Firstly, it is obvious I like these lanterns as I bought a second one, for me they are great but I like hand tools as much as power tools and like the nostalgia of old technology. Are they as quick, convenient or as safe as a battery operated lantern. No obviously not, they use gasoline or white gas (Coleman fuel). I bought these lanterns for multiple reasons. Nostalgia; I like the look, design and feel of the old technology. Power Outages; after going through 16 days of winter power outages (2 × 8 day stretches) in the past I wanted additional & varied means of lightsources. Outdoor life; This is a great light for sitting outside in the evening on the patio or going car camping. Pro's: This lantern is bright, relatively easy to use, and lasts many hours on a tank of fuel, so it is cheap to run. It gives you the option of having a different powered light source for emergency use. Con's: The lantern is not silent, there is a contstant whoosh sound while in use. It can be a little fiddly and has a learning curve in its use. There will be maintenance needs in the future, you will need spare mantles as you will have to change them sometime. The hazard is obvious, you have flammable fuels, the potential for fire and spills is obvious. You cannot put it on the patio table, leave it unattended and have children and animals running around. Because of the fire risk you should not use these lanterns indoors. If you do use these indoors in an emergency you should still fuel it outside and light it outside. If and when you do bring it inside you should take extra precautions including having a CO detector and fire extinguishers.
