  • Best beach shelter for the money
Size: 10 x 10 Feet
First of all this is my third Coleman Sun Shelter. The first one lasted several years after much abuse by sun and salt at the beach. When it finally got old we loved it so much we ordered another one. Unfortunately, Hurricane Sally destroyed that one shortly after we bought it(it wasn't assembled at the time, just in a storage shed) along with many other things we owned. So, we had to order another one to replace that one. It arrived and appeared fine, just as you would expect. Upon putting it up at the beach the first time I noticed a slight imperfection in the canopy itself. It wasn't something that would make it unusable, just something that would have diminished its total lifespan. This is where I was truly impressed. I took a couple photos of the imperfection while we were at the beach. I emailed Coleman customer service the following morning. Within an hour, I had a response asking for a bit more details and my purchase receipt. Before the end of the day, Coleman customer service had agreed to send an entire replacement, at no additional cost, to me. It arrived this week in perfect condition. Now for the actual product review. This is about 35 to 40 pounds. It is heavier than the offbrand canopies but comes with a carrying case that has wheels to make it easier to transport. Those wheels are of course almost useless on the loose sand but great for moving it to and from the vehicle and parking lots. Most average people can easily toss it on their shoulder for the final trek thru the sand. It does include carrying straps on the bag. This is extremely easy to setup with at least 2 people. The cheaper ones are no where near as sturdy as this one and just don't hold up to the wind, sun and salt. I will say it's imperative that you spray this off after every use as sand will make the slides and locks inoperable after only a few uses if you don't. If you simply spray it down with freshwater after each use, it will last a long time. This canopy, unlike the cheaper ones has a wind vent at the top that is a must when you are using it at the beach. The sudden gusts of wind will lift the others and destroy them while this one remains standing. We set it up at its tallest setting, there are 3 settings, and then use our feet to dig about 6 inches into the sand, we then place the legs in those holes and push the sand back over them. We have watched many other types of canopies be flipped and ours will still be standing strong. During extremely rough winds we occasionally use the supplied, preattached ropes to anchor it to our cooler carrying handle, just to be safe. I highly recommend getting the optional sunscreen that covers one side. It makes the entire covered portion usable instead of having the sun intrude on one side. When we go to the beach we plan on staying for the day so as the sun moves, we simply pick the canopy up and turn the sunscreen to the side where the sun is now at instead of moving the screen every time. All of our friends love this canopy and we've watched them go thru multiple cheap ones while we continued to use the same one. Spend the little bit of extra money and get this one. The quality is great and it will last a long time if you take care of it. ... show more

  • Holds up to all elements
Size: 10 x 10 Feet
I use this for everything. Camping, backyard parties, and in the winter, I use it in my Chicken run to give hens a dry place during the snow season. Gets full of snow, no damage. At the time of this review, I've had it for about 2 years.

  • Storage case is well engineered
Size: 12 x 12 Feet
My favorite part is it has a storage case that expands by unzipping a part of the case to expand the case so it will hold all parts of the canopy and frame even if you aren’t able to fold the canopy as they did in the factory. And who can ever fold it that tightly! It is also pretty easy to assemble, legs slide to full size easily. But it still is done easiest with 4 people. Very sturdy and large canopy when set up. We used it mostly for rain protection over a picnic table at a camp site. It worked well for that. We loved the large size. Has wheels on the case so weight is a not an issue to transfer to set up site. ... show more

  • Good tent, bag ripped after two uses, disappointing customer service/policies
Size: 10 x 10 Feet
I looked around for a popup shade to take to ultimate frisbee tournaments around the PNW, and this seemed like an upgrade from the Fred Meyer cheapos I've seen collapse or blow away on sidelines, so I ordered it during a sale. I've used it three times so far and mostly like it, though there is a glaring flaw if you plan to travel with it. Pros -Popup itself seems to be of pretty good quality. The material is thicker and more durable than the cheaper ones, and the coating on the metal pieces seems like it will keep them protected from rust longer than most. -Easy to set up. The large releases are much better than the nubs found on most other popups. Smooth expansion and contraction regardless of whether the canopy is on. -Stable. There are enough Velcro attachment points (including automatic ones at the four corners) that the canopy is securely attached to the frame. -Large stakes. The main stakes are very thick and rely on the cap to keep the feet from moving, not a bend in the stake head. Something else will fail in high winds before the stakes give out. -Bag has nice features. The included bag has a hard bottom with two wheels that are large enough to go over most grass/turf with no issues. Two compression straps take the tension off the zippers once you get it all packed up. Cons -If you plan to use it on the beach, be aware that those nice height releases will get sand in them and be much harder to engage. -The vent on top seems to let a small amount of rain in during even mild winds. -The bag is not very durable, not included in the warranty, and will not be replaced by Coleman if it fails. More on that last one: I've used the popup three times (two grass tournaments, one beach), and while unpacking it for the third, a friend noticed the bag was ripped near the top (picture attached). It is a major failure and in exactly the spot I'd expect the manufacturer to reinforce the zipper. I contacted Coleman via email, and they happily dispatched a replacement bag at no charge. I received it five days later, and to my chagrin, it was a basic nylon bag roughly the size of the frame without the canopy (picture attached). No wheels on the bottom, no zipper, no compression straps. Not having wheels is a major problem when I routinely have to walk across several fields every morning and evening at tournaments. I contacted Coleman again, this time via chat. While friendly, the representative insisted they could not replace the bag because they did not sell them separately. I offered to pay for shipping to send the entire set back for replacement, but they said the bag was not included in the warranty, so it did not qualify for a replacement. They explained them sending me the basic nylon bag was a courtesy, not part of any warranty claim. I asked if there was any way I could get a wheeled bag (even if I paid for it), and their reply was to purchase another full popup set. I pointed out it was pretty ridiculous to sell a set like this without the ability to replace a very important part, one without which the unit isn't feasibly portable. They repeatedly apologized, but said there was nothing more they would do other than let me keep the second-rate bag they'd already sent. So if you're planning to use this around your property, I'd say it's a good purchase. However, if you're like me and plan to routinely take it with you to cookouts, tournaments, and other events, I'd recommend looking at other brands that actually support their products. ... show more

  • Solid
Size: 10 x 10 Feet
We’ve had this pop up for over a year and used it 20+ times. Literally no complaints other than it is relatively heavy in the bag. It is smaller than most comparable products when stored so it’s easier to pack too. I was a bit hesitant to buy it based on some of the negative reviews, but take good care of it, store it inside when not in use, follow the set up instructions, and treat it with respect, and it is bulletproof. I’ve had it in thunderstorms in the Rockies, monsoons and 50+ mph dust storms in the Sonoran desert, and it’s solid. Make sure to properly stake the legs and use the guy lines and stakes at a 45 degree angle and it isn’t going anywhere. The set up and tear down is best with 2-4 people but I’ve done alone before. Following the instructions explicitly is not optional, do this and you will be fine! I would definitely suggest purchasing optional side wall too, it helps with privacy and additional shade. ... show more
