  • Not everything works as advertised.
PROS -Bluetooth: works decently. -Nightwatch works well. It's a huge relief to be able to read the controls at night. The regular 29LX model does not have night watch. -10 weather channels, most wx radios only have 7. -Weather alert: will interrupt CB mode to alert of emergency weather situations. -External mic: works ok with Bluetooth (need external/remote PTT device to use for CB function). -Separate digital readouts. A lot easier to see & read compared to the usual small meter Cobra radios have. -Has channel scan, memory channel scan, & weather channel scan. What a relief to not have to go through channels by hand. -Has instant ch 9 & 19 button. -Has clock, alarm clock, count down...So far I've only tried setting up the clock. CONS -External PTT jack has issues, even when turning down the dynamic & the talkback, it frequently causes only feedback like tones to be heard by fellow CB operators as well as on the radio's internal speaker or external speaker while transmitting. It often times will not respond to pushing the external PTT button on a brand new Cobra CA MS4 remote PTT device when plugged into the external jack. COBRA DIGITAL CA MS4 Remote Push-to-Talk Microphone System The CA MS4 works great when used via the interface it comes with & with a 4-6pin mic connector adapter Mic ADAPTER Convert a 4 pin Cobra / Uniden microphone to fit a 6 pin Ranger RCI radio - Workman C4PRCI6 plugged in via the hand mic connection, but then the use of the BT function is sacrificed. -External mic could be better at picking up my voice in BT mode; clipping it to shirt works ok, but works best when held directly to lips. It does not work well in CB mode with the external/remote PTT function. In this manner the dynamic needs turned way down to not get feedback, and then the mic must be held to mouth with hand cupped around it to be heard on the talk back. -Talk back mode is too quiet, even at max setting -Volume over all is not to my satisfaction, usually needs to be at max setting & is still a bit quiet. -Volume during BT function often fades out, especially when my phone's voicemail instructions are playing. -BT to phone connection could be improved. It takes a few minutes to finish connecting due to downloading the address book each and every time the radio is turned on (it dumps the info when you turn the radio off). You can't do anything with the radio during these minutes until it has completed the download. Other Bluetooth devices only take seconds to do this. It also has lost connection to my phone at least once when the phone never left the car. I think it would be great if a Bluetooth headset could connect to the radio and be used in the CB mode. -Weather station is heard faintly in the background while in CB mode. -Volume & talkback control knobs are tiny and difficult to grasp. -Would be nice if modulation was included in the digital read out so one could tell how well the radio is pickup up one's voice during transmit. -Of the 4 available display colors, only green is satisfyingly bright enough to be visible during day light. Next to that is blue, then perhaps red, but with amber, you can forget about it. -Doesn't have the soundtracker function. -A constant buzzing sound often is emitted from the radio, especially when using an external speaker (makes it louder). This also seems to be amplified & possibly induced by the sun when it has been beating down on the radio's casing. I'm not talking about the normal static heard when the squelch is down; this is in any mode regardless of volume knob level. If the ignition key is only turned to the point of allowing battery power to flow, the buzzing is not likely to occur, but if turned to the point of the AC vents beginning to blow air or further, the buzzing is likely to be present. -Seems to have a weaker receive than my old Cobra 25 WX ST. -It would be great if SSB was added into this radio & a 6 digit frequency readout. ... show more

  • Great radio with great sound.
Style: 29 LX Pattern Name: Radio
I've had this radio for almost 2 months now and finally decided to write a review. Let me start out by saying that my knowledge of CB's is extremely limited and Everything I've learned, is from reading as much as I can in these last 3 months. I went with the Cobra 29 LX because I liked the newer modern faceplate and the 29 seems to be a popular choice. Along with the radio, I purchased a Wilson T2000 Antenna which is 4.5ft tall. I also bought a Astatic 636L mic to replace the factory one with. I made a custom bracket out of some scrap iron and mounted it on the rear of my F250 inside the bed, and for the radio, I made a custom mount by bending some metal into L-brackets and mounting them under the center console (see pictures to see what I mean. Lastly, I mounted an external speaker above my head and ran a long 3.5mm audio cable through the head liner, down the A-pillar and under the carpet to the radio Before I even ran all the power wires for the radio. Before I ran all the power and ground wires for the radio, I had a CB shop peak and tune the radio. After it was all said and done, the radio dead keyed right under 6 watts of power and peaked right under 30 watts. From what I've read this seems to be the average for a basic peak and tune. I got the SWR nice and low 1.1-1.2 across all channels. So how does it perform? It performs amazing I think. So far everyone has told me how loud and clear it sounds to them. I usually talk on Ch 19 but as you know, Ch19 seems to be really dead these days where hours would go by without hearing a word. Tonight, While I was fueling up my truck, I talked with a guy who was a local and told me that him and a lot of other locals guys talk on Ch 28 and ch36 every night. He came in loud and clear and said that I was also coming in loud as if I was just a few miles away from him and asked me my location. When I gave it to him he couldnt believe I was able to hit him back so clearly because we were about about 20 miles apart (straight shot, not driving distance) I ended up talking with him and a few other guys who were all in the 15-20 mile range all running home base stations with towers and big power and they all complemented how well I sounded. I don't know much about CB's but I'm told that the Antenna is a big part of the performance you get. Either way, I'm very happy with this radio. At some point I'll likely add a linear amp to it but for now it works great and talks far. I do have one complaint wit the radio. Every time I set the clock and turn it on to show up, the next time I turn the truck back on after it's been turned off, the clock go away and resets its self. It's as if it isn't saving it in the memory. I remembers what my last channel I was on and every other feature that I've custom set...Everythin BUT the clock. It's not a huge deal to me since I have a clock about 1 foot above the radio anyway but just thought it was worth noting. ... show more

Just received this unit it is very nice but this model is not compatible with a PA . There is no jack for a pa on it just external speaker for louder broadcasts. I was hoping to get the PA feature but that only comes with the LE model so no luck .
