  • It is time to cut the cable. It is time to cut the cable.
I live in a suburb quite far from the city and many of the broadcast station antennas. I purchased the GE 29884 antenna a couple of weeks ago from Amazon. Along with the antenna, I purchased a PCT 4 Port Cable TV/HDTV/Internet amplifier (model PCT-MA2-4P) just in case I need it. I have been trying to "cut the cable" and stop paying expensive cable TV fees for even local basic television stations. In addition to the fees, my cable company switched to a system requiring cable TV boxes that you rent from them for $6/month per box. I have tried other powered indoor antennas and have had miserable experiences with them. Few channels could be scanned and the picture quality was dismal, or heavily pixelated, especially in the daytime hours. The few stations that I could pick up were often unwatchable. So back to cable I went. I decided to try the GE 29884 antenna based on the reviews I read on Amazon. The antenna comes in a fairly small box labelled as Pro Outdoor/Attic Mount Antenna. The installation booklet is small with tiny "mice" type. So you might need to scan in the booklet in order to be able to zoom in on the text and illustrations. All the parts are nicely packaged and are easily identified in the instruction manual. A count of each part type is also given, Prior to installation it helps to layout all the parts including the nuts and screws, the reflector rods, dipole antenna parts, main mast, mounting parts, etc. The installation can be a bit tricky, if you follow the manual. However is you do a search on "GE 29884 antenna assembly", YouTube videos can be found that simplify the assembly process a great deal. It took me about a half an hour to assemble the antenna. One nice thing is that rubber end caps were provided to cap off the dipole rods. The antenna definitely seems to be a quality product. I mounted the antenna in the attic, as high as possible using the provided J-mount mounting hardware and supplied M5 bolts and nuts. I disconnected the coaxial cable from the cable TV provider, and connected it to the antenna's connector located on the main mast. Using a bedroom TV, I then selected "antenna" as the input, and performed a channel scan. A total of 106 channels scanned. Most were crystal clear. Perhaps 3 or 4 were pixelated. Sure many of the channels are trash or of no interest to me (shopping channels, religious, languages I don't speak, etc) but many great channels came in beautifully including all the local channels and sub-channels, movie channels, retro, public, etc. A few audio-only channels were picked up. And I didn't have the amplifier connected. I did wire up the amplifier simply because a signal splitter attenuates the signal from the antenna as you feed the signal to multiple TVs. The 4-port amplifier boosts the signal going to each TV. So far, I've had the antenna for a week and I have not been disappointed. All I can say is "bye bye cable TV company". It is time to cut the cable. The antenna and amplifier will pay for itself in a month or two. Update: 6 weeks later: This antenna works like a charm. I have cut the cord, get no more monthly cable bills, and could not be happier. ... show more

  • Great Value In a Surprising Compact Antenna Great Value In a Surprising Compact Antenna
Antenna was well packaged and arrived in good condition. Lots of parts that need assembly, but take your time. It's not hard, but the instructions are not very detailed and the parts are not specifically indicated in the instructions, so you have to figure it out. There is a video that is helpful, but actually leaves some of the washers out, and if you follow the video you will have left over washers. Just know that there are no extra parts in the parts bag. The straight antenna aluminum tubs that insert into the main frame of the antenna seem very tight as the center of the tube nears the frame. Look closely, and you will see the antenna tube is crimped in the middle. The hole on both sides of the frame appear oval in shape, and the aluminum tube needs to be rotated slightly to align with the frame (the crimped part of the aluminum tube with the oval hole in the frame). Push the antenna tube through the hole and out the other side until the tube is centered in the frame. Then turn the tube a quarter turn to lock it in place. There are twelve of these tubes so take your time, and make sure all of the tubes ends are aligned. The other aluminum antenna parts are easy to attach with screws provided. Attach the stepped mount to the antenna frame and insert the U-bolt and screw on the wing nuts. Assemble the pole and base with the two remaining long screws with washers and nuts. Use the two bottom holes if you need to rotate the mounting pole. My antenna is mounted in my attic to a 2x4 cross support. The mounting plate is more than 4 inches long so I used stainless steel cable ties which you can see in the pictures. I used two 12 inch cable ties together on each side for the attachment, and used a cable tie gun to tighten them up. I pointed the antenna in the general direction of my two VHF local channels ABC & CBS which are 36 degrees apart and the reception is excellent. All my other channels are UHF and they are spread over an additional 51 degrees to the north, and again the reception is excellent. Altogether I am receiving 38 channels, which includes all major networks ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and PBS. The GE antenna is a passive antenna, so I added the RCA Digital Signal Amplifier for $33.15. The GE Antenna was reasonably priced at $38.98 and gets excellent reception with amplifier. Also make sure you are using at least RG6 coaxial cable. I had a section of RG59 cable that some cable installers had used years ago which I had to locate and replace because the reception was poor. I started to blame it on the antenna until I checked the cables and found the problem. Would highly recommend the GE Antenna and the RCA Amplifier because of thew reasonable cost and the great outcome. This antenna replaced a $90.00 ChannelMaster Flat antenna with an amplifier built-in that just quit working after two years. Very satisfied with this package. ... show more

  • Great solution for elderly family member. works well! horrible instructions however.
Over the past year or so, my 77 y.o. elderly mother has been starting to struggle with dementia. she has gotten to the point that she normally only watches 2-3 channels max. She was using directv and we were getting frustrated with it going out frequently. I have an outdoor HDTV antenna that i put up around 2018 or so, and haven't had any issues. I figured i would order this, along with a pre-amp because we are about 62 miles from the broadcast towers. (rural area). i put this in the attic, pointed towards the broadcast towers, hooked up the pre-amp and ran the cable. immediately, received around 20 channels! Channels even worked during rain/wind/ and cloud cover. the included instructions are horrible, so you will have to go over to youtube for videos to show you how to assemble this antenna. been using it for a couple weeks with no issues. main part is plastic, so i'm not very confident it would last very long outside, however the documentation seems to hint that it's been designed for outdoor mounting, i just personally wouldn't do it. you can get coax cable, and the pre-amp here on amazon. i used a RCA brand preamp, i have one personally and it works well with my channel master antenna. it's completely ridiculous to pay 100.00 a month and up for TV service. best thing about this, it's a one time expense (cost of antenna/cable/pre-amp) and your done! never have to pay for it again. cons are you lose your dvr and so forth, but the cost savings far outweigh the negatives. go ahead and order this one, it worked out great for us! reception will vary of course (depending on terrain and how high up the antenna is mounted). side note, i contacted our local cable tv provider for a quote for cable/DVR service for 2 rooms. i was quoted around $170.00 a month. current base package with directv (2 rooms and dvr) was costing $110.00 a month. pretty much a no-brainer here folks. update 3/27/25*** antenna continues to work well, i would highly suggest you mount this in attic inside, the body of antenna is plastic and the sun will destroy it probably in 3 years or so. granted there is some slight signal loss, but pre-amp seems to have taken care of that part my 77 year old mother with dementia enjoys OTA tv, and remains calm and content for the most part. small price to pay to have your loved one battling a terrible illness. ... show more

  • Follow the instructions and point it in the right direction.
Light-weight, very easy to assemble and works flowlessly with crystal clear HD picture and sound quality. Just have to follow the instructions, mount and point it in the right direction. I live about 60 miles away from where the major TV station towers are, still I get superior picture quality from all major TV networks plus some. My only concern is durability of the product because I don't think it will do well outside in high wind area, but that's my personal opinion though. I live in a high wind area where winds gusts sometimes can get up to 40 plus mph. Taking that into consideration, I mounted the antenna inside in a room and using HDHomeRun to distribute TV signal to the TV's in other rooms. In all l get about 60 channels, about 20 of them in HD and the rest are also pretty good. Very happy with it and highly recommend it to anyone who is thinking of cutting the cord. ... show more

  • BIG YES!! This GE antenna gave me 106 channels with perfect pictures!! BIG YES!! This GE antenna gave me 106 channels with perfect pictures!!
I decided to buy a good antenna for my new 65" LG OLED, and this GE 29884 antenna received 106 channels in Orlando with pitcure perfect quality!! WOW! I located the GE in the attic of my one-story house and hope the plastic parts hold up and don't get brittle in the summers when the attic temperatures get up to 110+ degrees during the summer days! Time will tell. While the instructions are not well done, I found it fairly east to assemble...but I'm very handy. I had been using a $35 flat plastic antenna that worked fairly well, but was unattractive hanging from the ceiling vent. I bought a $66 electronic box antenna on Amazon due to 90 "5-star reviews" but it was a total joke and only received 20 crappy channels. I almost ordered a high quality Channel Master $149 antenna, but found out that I receive every important local channel with this small $39 GE 29884, and was actually shocked it was so amazing! ... show more

  • This Antenna ACTUALLY WORKS!!!! This Antenna ACTUALLY WORKS!!!!
Holy crap this is a great Antenna, seriously! I have bought a couple of the little dinky electric ones because I thought "It's electric, it's got to work better than my dad's old antenna style antenna" I have to tell you, honestly, none of the little electric ones have ever really worked for me. They pick up a channel or two and not consistently, the weird graphic artifacts and the sound going in and out, it always just led to major frustration and finding a streaming alternative. So I decided to give this thing a chance and boy am I happy, I hooked it up to my TV in my metal work shop and I get 43 super sharp and clear HD channels out of the 45 it picked up. I am beyond happy with this thing and that never happens. ... show more

  • Seems to work, but limited
Overall, seems ok. Picks up all the same channels as an inexpensive indoor antenna and isn't all that useful to me. I need something with better range and ability to pick up multiple signals at once (I turn it 5 degrees and lose some channels, gain others).

  • Exceeded my expectations! Exceeded my expectations!
I was skeptical when I first ordered this outdoor antenna despite the great reviews. But I have to say, this antenna is simple to assemble and easy to install. I originally tested it from inside to see what kind of signal I would receive, since it was delivered later in the day and I didn't have time to install it outside before nightfall. When I connected it, it found 64 channels on the first try. Although the channels were not as clear due to so much interference, it was a good sign. The next day, I tested it outside from ground level, and it immediately found about 90 clear channels. After taking some measurements and getting the necessary tools and supplies, I installed it on the side of the house near the roof in under an hour. My TV found 101 crystal clear channels, including all the local NYC channels. Now I'm able to watch the NBA Finals without paying a monthly fee. It comes with all the supplies needed to attach it firmly. I have already recommended it to a friend. Best purchase ever! ... show more
