I was nervous to get this because there's so much junk and fake reviews on Amazon, it's hard to figure out what's decent. I had even added it to my cart before and removed it. Finally, I forgot to close the coop one night and one of my girls was attacked but luckily survived (she's the red closest in the pic). Next day, I ordered this door. I liked this one because it opens horizontally, we have a big access door above the chicken door so a typical vertical one from tractor supply wouldn't work. My husband installed it and I set it up, it was surprisingly easy. It's been working fine, we've had it installed probably a month and a half now and it's still at 90% battery life. We've had some pretty nasty storms and rain and it's held up. The peace of mind it has given me is amazing, and I seriously regret not buying this sooner. I can't attest to how it performs in the cold since it's summer in the south down here, but if this review is never updated, it's because we're still going strong. ... show more

I bought this automatic door as an economic option to some of the other $300+ doors I've seen at places like Tractor Supply, and I haven't been disappointed. It's opened and closed properly every day since installation. It is a little difficult to figure out, because it uses a light sensor to determine when to open and close, so I do highly recommend reading the instructions (which I don't normally do), but so far we haven't had any troubles! It's probably worth mentioning that where it is placed is covered, so ours hasn't been exposed to any rain or other weather, so I can't speak to the weatherproofing much other than it has held up really well to the high-humidity climate we live in. ... show more

Pretty easy to figure out the programing after reading the instructions. Super easy to install on my coop. I had to cut and attach wood slats because I was installing it on the wire part of my coop. I also added a wood trim below hopefully that wood chip won’t get scraped into the track. After I installed it I realized it’s on a different side then the regular door and was worried if my chickens might have a hard time figuring out how to get back into the coop. After checking on then throughout the day they were going in and out of the door. Then at the end of the day they also were all inside huddled together on their roost. Door closed as programmed. Seems pretty sturdy and they seem to fit just fine. I’ll see how the next few days/ weeks go. ... show more

Installed this originally on our chicken coop. Very easy installation, and setup is not hard following the programming instructions. It's nice it can be set via time or by light sensor, with a manual override. The safety mechanism works well to open the door back up if something is trapped. About the only downfall with this side-opening door, is if your chickens knock something into the bottom trap. The solution is to keep the door off the floor of the coop by several inches, and that should reduce that potential problem. One other issue we ran into was getting ducks. Our male Pekin duck turned out to be too big to fit through the door; he's a wide load! So I had to remove this door, and go to a vertical actuator arm-style door where I could get a significantly wider opening. But for chickens, this is a great door! ... show more

    • Door won’t close with shavings in the way

Edit: i have since reinstalled the door so that the track is an inch or two off the ground. This way the bedding falls through or off the track and it always closes! I bought this door because the sliding doors seemed safest for the chickens, but because the doors rely on the track to close, if there are shavings in the way, the door won’t close. I have to continually clean the track, which defeats the purpose for me since I bought it so I can go out of town. I even tried installing a wooden beam to block the shavings but it didn’t help. ... show more

I haven't had it long enough to give it a 5 until my chickens have a few days, so I might edit later. It was easy to install & set time. I wish it was a little larger, but my Buff Orpington Sarah gets her big chicken butt through. 😁🐔 I like that it opens left & right instead of going up. Tried one of the 100$ aluminum doors with the holes down the center for a gear. The Gear grinded against the wall because it was not properly designed with clearance. This door is 50$ more but 10x better product. Id advise against wasting your time or money on the cheaper ones, this one works great. And additional benefit is that it seals tighter for winter.
