Frequently asked questions

Using the Char-Broil Smoker Box for the first time is simple. Start by soaking your choice of wood chips in water for about 30 minutes to an hour. While the chips are soaking, preheat your grill. Once the chips have soaked, drain them and place them into the smoker box. Then, place the smoker box directly on your grill's grates, ideally over a burner that will be turned on. Close the grill's lid and wait for smoke to start pouring out of the smoker box, which may take around 10-15 minutes. Once you see smoke, you can begin cooking your food with the grill lid closed to infuse it with a smoky flavor.

Yes, the Char-Broil Cast Iron Smoker Box is designed to be versatile and can be used on gas, charcoal, and electric grills. Its durable cast iron construction allows it to withstand high temperatures, regardless of the grill type. Just ensure it's placed directly on the grates over a heat source.

To clean the smoker box after use, allow it to cool down completely. Once cool, remove any remaining wood chips or ash. Since it's made from cast iron, it's best to avoid using soap and water. Instead, just wipe it down with a dry cloth. If needed, you can scrape off any stuck-on residue with a brush or a scraper. To prevent rust, you can lightly coat the box with cooking oil after cleaning.

The Char-Broil Smoker Box can be used with a variety of wood chips for different flavors. Common choices include hickory or mesquite for a strong smoke flavor, apple or cherry wood for a sweeter, milder taste, and oak or maple for something in between. Experiment with different types of wood chips to find your preferred flavor. Remember to soak the chips in water before use to ensure they produce ample amounts of smoke.

  • Love it. Be sure to season it.
This is a sturdy and well-made item that certainly does the job intended. I would like to address an issue raised by other reviewers that frankly, rather surprised me, especially coming from presumably experienced cookers. That is, the issue of a cast-iron cooking utensil rusting if it gets wet. Yes, they do rust, as everything iron does, and heat accelerates this process. Unless you season the box like you would a cast-iron skillets. Coat the smoke box with oil, and you can do this either as a separate process or with its first use, and heat it for twenty minutes or so at high heat. The oil binds with the iron in a process called polymerization. Repeat the next couple of times you cook, and you have a well-seasoned cast-iron utensil that will never rust. This item will probably last forever. I have cast-iron skillets that have been in my family for at least a hundred years. I see I reason to doubt the immortality of this smokebox. ... show more

  • Bring on the smoke!!
I have a barbecue with five burners, I took the grate off the middle section and built a suspension system to hold the smoker box above the burner. The flame is individually controlled for this burner, and can be adjusted higher or lower. I can easily lift off the lid and remove the whole box to fill it with apple branches, and reinstall it and have it ready to do its job. I can put dried branches on one side, and soaked branches on the other. Works amazingly well. I use branches as well as chips from previous tree trimmings. And my apple tree just keeps on giving. I don't cook directly over the box, so there's no need to clean it other than emptying the ashes. How much easier can that be? And the apple smoke on pork, chicken, salmon, and shrimp is absolutely unbeatable. ... show more

  • Came in chipped.
Haven't used it yet but when I got it one of the corners was chipped off. I'm not going to return it because it's not worth the hassle and more ventilation I guess. More annoying than anything.

  • Great Purchase
Be sure to "season" your "smoker"..... This little gem works so well I can't believe it has taken me this long to find it. I mistakenly bought wood pellets rather than chips and they work perfectly. Understand that the pellets are like "rice" and triple in size. I even reused the one-cooked pellets and that seemed to work really well. I used it a few times before I read that you should season the metal like you would an iron skillet...but no foul. The chicken I've made has been sensational with the smoked smell. That $15 bag of pellets will last a couple years as you don't need that much. Remember to soak them at least an hour for maximum smoke. ... show more

  • IT SMOKES!
I bought this for a gift for my dad. I bought one many years ago for myself. It works well, I think probably better than some thin metal ones. It does get cruddy, so unless you plan to clean it regularly with a steel brush it won't retain its original appear for too long. But it is heavy duty and I really pretty its lid that simply sit of the top to be easily removed. Some of the other kinds are hinged and I think a bit of a bother. My smoker box finally rusted out after many years of regular use. You can expect that of almost anything. ... show more

  • Great quality and price!
This is a great buy. When you can purchase a cast iron smoker box that will last for years. Compared to the tin and aluminum boxes that last a season, if that long. Then to top it off, you get 2 bags of chips.
