Frequently asked questions

Using the Char-Broil Smoker Box for the first time is simple. Start by soaking your choice of wood chips in water for about 30 minutes to an hour. While the chips are soaking, preheat your grill. Once the chips have soaked, drain them and place them into the smoker box. Then, place the smoker box directly on your grill's grates, ideally over a burner that will be turned on. Close the grill's lid and wait for smoke to start pouring out of the smoker box, which may take around 10-15 minutes. Once you see smoke, you can begin cooking your food with the grill lid closed to infuse it with a smoky flavor.

Yes, the Char-Broil Cast Iron Smoker Box is designed to be versatile and can be used on gas, charcoal, and electric grills. Its durable cast iron construction allows it to withstand high temperatures, regardless of the grill type. Just ensure it's placed directly on the grates over a heat source.

To clean the smoker box after use, allow it to cool down completely. Once cool, remove any remaining wood chips or ash. Since it's made from cast iron, it's best to avoid using soap and water. Instead, just wipe it down with a dry cloth. If needed, you can scrape off any stuck-on residue with a brush or a scraper. To prevent rust, you can lightly coat the box with cooking oil after cleaning.

The Char-Broil Smoker Box can be used with a variety of wood chips for different flavors. Common choices include hickory or mesquite for a strong smoke flavor, apple or cherry wood for a sweeter, milder taste, and oak or maple for something in between. Experiment with different types of wood chips to find your preferred flavor. Remember to soak the chips in water before use to ensure they produce ample amounts of smoke.

  • Does what it says it will do!
The only negative I can say is that one corner was chipped, but that was because Amazon tossed into a paper bag and shipped it that way. It wasn’t worth returning it. Otherwise it worked just as described.

  • Great smoke flavor in a small grill with charcoal
I own a small grill, great smoke flavor when used in combination with charcoal. I was asked if I had used a smoker. Grilled proteins for about 10 min. Propane grill requires what feels like a long time for box to start smoking and smoke flavor is not as strong. Overall happy with my purchase.

  • Great idea, look at your grill first
A family member had one of these, and it added so much flavor to food off the grill so we bought one. Our grill has tons of vents, that dont close, so I think all the smoke escapes because we didn't get the same flavor at all. As for this product, I would recommend for the grill, so good for meat and veggies, just didn't work out with our grill. Its heavy and seems like it should last forever. ... show more

  • Great quality and price!
This is a great buy. When you can purchase a cast iron smoker box that will last for years. Compared to the tin and aluminum boxes that last a season, if that long. Then to top it off, you get 2 bags of chips.

  • Love it. Be sure to season it.
This is a sturdy and well-made item that certainly does the job intended. I would like to address an issue raised by other reviewers that frankly, rather surprised me, especially coming from presumably experienced cookers. That is, the issue of a cast-iron cooking utensil rusting if it gets wet. Yes, they do rust, as everything iron does, and heat accelerates this process. Unless you season the box like you would a cast-iron skillets. Coat the smoke box with oil, and you can do this either as a separate process or with its first use, and heat it for twenty minutes or so at high heat. The oil binds with the iron in a process called polymerization. Repeat the next couple of times you cook, and you have a well-seasoned cast-iron utensil that will never rust. This item will probably last forever. I have cast-iron skillets that have been in my family for at least a hundred years. I see I reason to doubt the immortality of this smokebox. ... show more

  • Not that durable
Had to return item because it was broken. They send me another one and the same thing happen after I told them about the proper way of packaging. Cast iron is fragile and they are putting it in a thin plastic bag.

  • Great product
I really like my smoker box. It adds a nice smoke flavor to my ordinary gas grill. I just place a few wood chips or pellets inside give it a few minutes to heat up, and I have smoke!! Built very sturdy it should provide years of use.

  • Char-Broil Cast Iron Smoker Box
I used this as a smoker box on my Weber performer. I have the grate with the hole in the middle and I have the Vornado charcoal holder in the middle bellow the center hole of the grate. I place the smoker box with wood chips that I soaked in water right on top the charcoal and it smokes like crazy it doesn't light the wood chips but it turns it to charcoal. I placed the meats around the grate next time I'll use less charcoal as it heats up the grill too much. I open the bottom vents and closed the lid vents. I placed the lid to cover but I leave about 1/4 inch gap for air and it worked really good. ... show more
