  • Chapin Salt Spreader: Designed for professional or contractor ice melt and salt, although remains a top choice for homeoweners. The 80 lb rust-resistant broadcast spreader is weather-resistant, has a blue poly hopper and a rugged, plastic spiked auger breaks up and limits clumps from clogging the gate opening while spreading
  • How to Use and Convenience: Adjustable front and side baffles allow for precise control of spread pattern allowing you to change the gate opening (lever) based on your particulates. The Spreader is recommended for use with salt, halite, potassium chloride, magnesium chloride and calcium chloride (small and pelletized particulates)
  • Comfort and Control: This spreader has an ergonomic, solid linkage T-Shaped Handle with grips and full bar gate lever control, making it easy to use and has a comfortable grip even with gloves, while the rain and snow cover keeps your hopper protected while you are working
  • Components: It is supported by a powder-coated steel frame, while the 12" wide tread pneumatic tires provide traction when moving over snow and icy ground and enclosed metal alloy gears makes it weather resistant and great for ice melt, halite and smaller particulates
  • Chapin Guarantee: This spreader is backed by Chapins 2-year limited warranty and supported by a dedicated US-based customer service and technical help centre

  • Works great - poor instructions
Works great but the instructions need words not just pictures, some thing we're not in apicture and left to your best guess but other than that it works great and appears to be decent quality.

  • Works Great Once Assembled, Assembly Takes Patience
This spreader works great and does exactly what it’s supposed to do. Once it’s up and running, it spreads salt and ice melt evenly and smoothly, and it handles larger areas without any trouble. It feels solid, rolls well, and the adjustable controls make it easy to dial in how much material you want coming out. That said, putting it together was a super pain. Assembly took longer than expected and definitely tested my patience. The instructions could be clearer, and it’s not something you breeze through quickly. If you’re not a fan of assembly, be prepared to take your time. After getting past that part, though, it’s been very reliable. The tires roll well, the enclosed design helps keep material contained, and it feels like it’s built for real work, not light-duty use. Overall, it performs really well and gets the job done. Just know that the setup is the hardest part — once that’s over, it’s smooth sailing. ... show more

  • Terrible to assemble but great to use
We live in an area that gets a fair amount of ice and snow. Up until now we’ve used the “grab a handful and toss” method of spreading ice melt. Needless to say, this is not the most efficient method, so I was glad to get this Chapin spreader. The unit comes unassembled, and putting it together was a nightmare. The directions were all by diagram and if you get one thing out of order like my husband did, it can take hours and a trip to your local hardware store to correct. Add to this that some of the holes were not cut all the way through and it’s a recipe for frustration. Once the spreader is assembled, it’s clear sailing. The hopper holds a large quantity of ice melt and you can use the included cover if it’s sleeting. The width of spread is adjustable to accommodate different types of ice melt and different widths of surface. Needless to say, pushing this along to apply ice melt is a breeze compared with the old toss method and it’s a more even and efficient method as well. The unit appears quite sturdy so it likely will hold up over numerous winters. Overall, though the assembly was a major headache, the ice melt spreader now will make winters a bit less of a chore. ... show more

  • Great Coverage, Solid Build, Simple to Assemble
Been using this a lot this past winter storm for spreading rock salt and it’s been working great. It throws material evenly and the baffles/adjustments make it easy to control the spread so you’re not dumping salt where you don’t need it. The whole thing feels built tough too - even the tires feel heavy-duty and roll smoothly over rough spots. Putting it together was straightforward - I was able to do it myself without any frustration. I also like that it can be used for fertilizer later on, so it’s not just a winter-only tool. Not cheap, but it feels like it’ll last for years. ... show more

  • I expected more at this price point
For the $299 price point, I really expected more from this spreader. It's good, and the components seem to be good quality, but I can't say I strongly recommend it. Let's focus on the positive to start...the wheels are large and very sturdy, probably nicer than the ones on my car! The bucket is also very well made and thick, and it holds a good amount of ice melt. All of the components (and it feels like 400 pieces when you're assembling it!), seem to be of a high quality standard. In use, it DOES spread the ice melt more evenly than I would by hand, and the cover works well to keep the salt dry during a storm. But here are my problems with it...starting with assembly. Truly this is one of the most painful sessions I've had in a while trying to put together a device. It took over an hour and a half, I had leftover parts for no reason, and some of the parts were incorrectly labeled. I do a lot of assembly and I follow all the instructions to the letter, but these are impossible and frustrating. The instructions are just outline sketches with very little description, and they are wholly inadequate for even a very capable individual with all the right tools. I finally resorted to asking my husband, who is a very good DIY-er but never reads instructions...he made some suggestions that helped, and lent a hand when the bolt tightening got so cramped and awkward you needed a second pair of hands. When I did finally figure it out, despite the minimal instructions, it came time to test it. I'm not tall (just 5'3"), and in my first passes over the icy walkway, it barely spread any salt, despite being fully opened. What I discovered is that you need to tip the bucket forward in order for the ice melt to spin the distribution plate at the bottom. Instead of an even spread, I had large dumps of ice melt in a few spots when it got so heavy it all fell off the spinner. If you're over 5'5", you might not notice this because it would be your natural position for walking with the spreader, but for us shorter people, we need to lift up and tilt. Once that was resolved, it did a fine job spreading, but because the ice melt all sits to the front of the bucket, I had to manually move it or jostle the spreader to get the ice melt to move back to the center for distribution. Again, maybe it's just my height that is an issue, but I'm not so short that it should be that much of a problem. Is it good? Yes. It does work and certainly does a more even distribution job than I would by hand. Is it worth $300? Not in my opinion. If you really want this, hire someone from one of those handyman sites to put it together for you (which will cost about $50 more), and maybe you won't be so frustrated and will like the device better for it. ... show more

  • Well built
This Chapin spreader is very well built and feels sturdy and heavy duty. I love the large tires, which make it easy to maneuver. Assembly was simple. My 13 year old was able to put it together with no issues at all. So far, I’ve used it for spreading ice melt, and it worked perfectly, but it can also be used for fertilizer or grass seed, which is nice. I store it on my covered porch with the included top cover on. That way it’s protected from the elements. Once winter is over, I plan to empty out the rock salt, wash it thoroughly, and use it for fertilizer. The multi-use design is a big plus. The large size is also nice. We have a very long amd wide driveway with a four car garage, and this makes the job so much easier. Before, I was spreading salt by hand with a cup, which took forever. Now I can finish the entire driveway in a fraction of the time. ... show more

  • A box of parts!
You receive a box of parts. If you’re time is important to you purchase a spreader that is somewhat assembled.
