This will be perfect for my sidewalk and where the snow plow can't get to near my garage entrance. Just the right size. Before getting this, I was shopping around for a bigger, better spreader. My small Scott’s spreader with plastic wheels worked for several years, kind of, but I wanted to move up to a user friendly tool. This Chapin spreader is very close in quality and performance to a $450 spreader from a competing company that I was considering. At almost half the price, that makes this a great deal. $249 may still seem like quite a lot for a spreader, but now I’m not fighting the machine to make it spread evenly, and it effortless. At 64 years old I need tools that are easier to use. The large pneumatic tires make covering bigger areas a breeze, with much less rolling resistance. This comes with two styles of augers for different media. I installed the auger for fertilizer and grass seed to begin with but when the snow starts to fly I’ll switch over to the rock salt auger. Assembly was very straightforward by installing the handles and selecting which auger you need. If you store the spreader with the handles folded, the kit comes with knurled knobs for easy take down. The hopper is huge! Salt bags are 50 lbs. but this spreader can hold 80 lbs. This may sound silly, but one of my favorite features is the clear vinyl topper. Many times in the past I’ve wanted to spread grass seed or lime while it is raining, but of course that would be a clumpy mess in the hopper. Now it is possible. It also has two side gates and a front gate so that you can direct the media, for example, restricting it onto a sidewalk. I would definitely recommend this item to a friend!

I've used quite a few push-type broadcast spreaders over the years, both for de-icer and (more commonly) for general lawn use, and I think as far as rugged design and sheer beef, this one takes the cake. It is clearly designed for spreading de-icers as its primary purpose, and that's what the advertising tells you about. Without a doubt it will be good at that - the hopper is massive, the controls are well-designed to operate in freezing weather with gloved hands, and the design includes a spiked internal agitator to help keep clumped or coarse-granular material broken up and flowing. It even has an elastic-edged, clear-plastic topped cover for the hopper to keep snow and rain out of the material you're spreading. There are also adjustable baffles around the spreader disk, which let you control which side it's throwing out of - get your sidewalk without de-icing your lawn! What the advertisement does *not* cover as well is that this also includes a standard agitator for non-salt applications! The adjustable gate is fully suited for other dispensing needs like fertilizer, seed, or pesticide granules, and the flat standard agitator sweeps out plenty of the bottom of the hopper to keep them flowing. So a quick swap from the spiked auger to the flat agitator, and this will keep right on going into spring and summer for lawn care! The big pneumatic tires roll great on grass as well as on our gravel driveway, as well. I am very pleased with this spreader, and I'm quite excited to use it for real outside of just a couple quick tests once we actually start getting some cold temps here this year!

When I pulled this unit out to tackle the driveway after a snowstorm, I found it to be a well built spreader with a lot of thoughtful features for its price point around $220-$240. The 80-pound poly hopper, 12″ pneumatic tires, spiked auger for breaking up clumps, enclosed gearbox, and adjustable baffles all show it’s designed for serious winter duty. I liked how the material fed smoothly when calibrated properly, especially after using the gate dial and baffles to direct the spread where I needed it most. On the downside, it’s fairly heavy(31 lbs empty) and takes up more space than I expected. Also, the setup required a bit more effort than some “ready to go” models. Overall, if you need a dependable ice melt and salt spreader that delivers professional level features for residential use, I’d say this model is absolutely worth the investment as it’s durable, effective, and built for the elements.
