  • So far so good... this thing is a workhorse
I have used it twice before it snowed. And it works for at least 2 - 3 hours off a charge. I don't use as a backpack, but attached to an ATV. Works very well. I can't comment on durability until spring... but I cleaned it very, very carefully before putting away. So hopefully it works as well in the spring. Combined with Roundup concentrate, it is WAY cheaper than spray bottles from the hardware store. ... show more

  • Fix these items first, then use.
So I bought this knowing there were complaints about batteries, leaks and just general disappointment. I also knew once I received it, this thing was getting torn down. Here is what I found: the o-ring between the pump and canister had 3 spots of lubricant. I fixed that with Vaseline. The complaint of batteries getting wet from leaks... so many opportunities in there, the o-ring was just the start. Looks like a general purpose cement was applied to the discharge line. It wasn't enough and pulled apart easily. I applied cement to the barb, applied the hose and clamp. The battery compartment has 2 drainage holes, left and right. They are small and will likely plug up quickly. I sealed those and made a single larger hole up front, under the switch... at least I can watch it there. As for the draining batteries, that one is easy to see. This has an on/off switch. It disconnects the battery 100%. Battery draw will be happening before that, at the posts when they get moisture and corrode. I sealed those also. So, Vaseline and a silicone based adhesive, a drill and bit, a touch of general purpose cement and 20 minutes time. If I don't get all the bugs this round, I'll tear it apart again. It was a cheap enough and I know the brand. If it goes well I will update. If it doesn't, I will correct it and update. This is a 3 star fix before you try item. Well, first update. O-ring leaks. Blue rtv gasket maker to the rescue! The good news. The sealant on the battery terminals did its job. ... show more

  • Excellent sprayer
I discovered battery operated sprayers last year. I bought a 2 gallon sprayer loved the ease of use. No more stopping to pump it, consistent spray pressure, etc. This spring I discovered 4 gallon battery operated sprayers are available as well. I have a pretty large yard and decided it was time to get a Chapin and I have no regrets. I used it for the first time this past weekend. I sprayed 4 loads and the battery still shows full charge. I love not needing to pump it by hand. Just fill, mix and go! Pros: 1. Wide fill opening makes it easy to add water & other ingredients. 2. Opening has a removable mesh basket to filter the liquids that are being added. And the sprayer has 2 other filters to help ensure no plugged nozzles. 3. Spray pressure is strong and consistent. 4. Very minimal sound when pump is in operation. 5. Sprays out virtually every last drop in the tank. If you are wearing as a back pack, stand up straight or it can't get all the liquid. I noted some complaints that the sprayer won't use all the liquid in the tank but this has not been my experience. Cons: 1. For me this is minor but, the hose could be a bit longer - maybe an additional 1-2 feet. But, in general, the sprayer worked well so this is not a major issue for me. I hope to get many years of use from this sprayer. And it helps encourage me to keep after the weeds, etc. in my yard. I think, in the long run, it will keep my yard looking better because, before, I hated getting out the hand pump sprayer, mixing numerous batches, etc. This is a good sprayer at a good price. ... show more

  • Great backpack sprayer
Was such a great sprayer, I bought another one after 3+ years of use. Kept outside in hot Texas sun, and through historic freeze (even battery). Unit put up with so much more abuse than it should have been subjected to. Do be sure to charge battery every month or so (it's lithium). Would probably last MUCH longer if properly cared for, lol. Only thing was unit has "one" pressure, which is pretty high... can't modulate the flow down. ... show more

  • Too many flaws
Where do I start? The jar thread on the top lid is ill fitting. Since it also doubles as a handle, it can let loose while your lifting 32 pounds of product, only to have it dump on the ground. The padded straps are to small for the application and dig into your shoulders. The waist strap never reaches your waist and awkwardly wraps around your upper chest. The strap attachment isn't positive and the straps tend to slid on the support rail. You are constantly fidgeting with them to get the whole affair to fir comfortably. A plastic pin that operates the valve in the handle broke after a few weeks of use. Spare parts are available but I had to by the entire assembly just for the 10 cent pin. This thing leaks like a sieve, dumping pesticides and herbicides down your back. I tightened the hose clamp underneath but it soon started leaking again. The location of the battery directly under the pump makes it susceptible to leaking fluid. The battery then gets corroded and will stop working completely. I replaced the battery only to have the pump fail after less than another 10 minutes of use. the tubular frame does not stabilize the sprayer very well when sitting on the ground, especially after filling it with 4 gallons of material. It's a clumsy design both on and off of your body. Overall I would rate this sprayer as VERY POOR. It is not well designed and reliability is terrible. I finally gave up on it and threw it in the trash after a single season of use. $150 down the drain. I ordered the Ryobi 4 gallon backpack sprayer as a replacement. Let's hope it does a better job than the Chapin did. ... show more
