  • Limited parts availabilty. Needs ongoing product improvement and a lower price.
ADDITIONAL HITS AFTER 7 MONTHS (FEBRUARY 11, 2022): Parts: The pump is now available as a replacement part. User Manual: A user manual created 9/1/2021 is now available on the Petra website. ADDITIONAL MISSES AFTER 7 MONTHS (FEBRUARY 11, 2022): Price Increase: The current February 11, 2022 price of $449.99 is a 61% increase over what I paid ($279.99 with $20 discount coupon) on October 20, 2020! Tank Filler Neck Leakage: The tank filler neck sealing surface is significantly warped. This appears to be a result of factory tank manufacturing standards that do not require maintaining a flat sealing surface. As a result, my filler cap required an additional attached lid handle (or a separate tool) to provide the required leverage to fully seal the lid. A sealed lid is especially important (when using a fully filled sprayer in the backpack mode) to prevent chemicals leaking out onto the users neck and back, which I experienced. Tank Filler Cap Vent Inset: Tends to leak when the tank is near full. Typical $120 manual pump 3 Gallon backpack sprayers use a one way user replaceable diaphragm vent valve to prevent leakage onto the user. 12VDC Charger: The 12VDC charging receptacle plug on the sprayer is an exact fit for typical television, computer and amplifier cords that are plugged into 120VAC receptacles. The 12VDC charger receptacle plug is marked 10A 250V~ (~means AC). As a result, there is danger of some using a common television, computer, or similar cord and plugging the sprayer direct into a 120VAC household receptacle. HITS JULY 15, 2021: Large 6.5 Gallon Backpack Capacity: Most backpack sprayers are around 4 gallons. The Petra battery version (of a similar 6.5 gallon gasoline engine version by others) is unique. If too heavy, fill the 6.5 gallon tank less. The straps fully support the weight of a filled Petra HD5000 sprayer. Spray Volume and Pressure: The HD5000 leads the pack of battery backpack sprayers in spray volume and pressure. That allows quicker product application and wider spray paths up to 9.5 ft. (confirmed in my testing using outsourced nozzles). By comparison, most other battery powered backpack sprayers have lower flows and/or pressures. Parts: Petra quickly responds with replacements for missing or out of spec parts. HITS & MISSES JULY 15, 2021: Available Spare Pump: A 2201 labeled pump (similar, but not equal) to original performance is often to usually NOT available as a part from Petra. I recommend immediately ordering or outsourcing a spare pump, even it does not fully meet original pump specifications. I have never seen the current 2202 labeled pump available in the last 10 months as a spare Petra part. Parts Pricing with Shipping: Petra website parts pricing are typically reasonable, but shipping charges are not always so great. A few months ago, a $14.99 spare backup pump for the HD4000 (used in the older HD5000), shipping was $10.65. For a small $1.65 plastic nozzle, shipping was $12.03. If you order 10 small plastic nozzles totaling $16.50, shipping was $61.81! Currently, this has been changed to higher parts prices with free shipping. This is similar to, but typically higher than Amazon pricing for Petra parts. Cart with 50’ Hose: The hose reel mounted on their wheeled cart works great. If you need this for difficult terrains or the weight of backpacking, this is a great combination. However, the top of cart hose reel location coupled with the compact cart wheel width, enables the cart to easily tip over during use. MISSES JULY 15, 2021: User Manual: The most current manual (available indirectly online) from Petra is dated 5/20/19. There is no easy direct link to this version on the Petra website. The current manual that ships with the sprayer is not available online, but appears printed from a formatted version complete with links that could be, but is not posted online. LED Voltmeter: This is not a classic voltmeter that by definition, is an instrument for measuring electric potential in volts. This one comprises of 2 LED Lights. There is no indication of actual voltage or even how much battery capacity remains. One LED light is red and the other green. Both are normally illuminated after a full charge and during operation. When a charge is needed, the green LED becomes dark, while the red LED remains illuminated. The best and most useful Petra voltmeter is found on the new HD4100 with an 11-15 volt range. I use a digital voltmeter adapted to plug into the power-in port. A newer fully charged battery is 13.35 to 13.50 volts and 11.87 volts after 50 gallons are pumped. Pressure Control: Typical of similar sprayers, there is no direct pressure sensor transducer or control, other than the mechanical pressure switch built into the pump (that has a cut-out setting of 100 psi). In reality, the advertised 10-80 psi switch is a variable voltage control that indirectly affects pressure by varying the motor speed with a control knob. Even at the lowest setting, if flow is low enough, pressure will rise to about 100 psi, before activating the cut-out switch on the pump. As a result, the initial spray is around 100 psi, dropping down to 10 psi, then back to 100 psi, depending on flow. The result is widely varying droplet size and spray distances. Black Petra Wand: The nozzle adapter is known to leak and/or pop off during use. A Petra video recommends adding a provided spare flat (rubber) washer in series with to the original to fix this issue. This helps, but a better fix is using a #5 O-ring after the flat washer, which engages the indent on the wand much better than the recommended fix. Wand Hose Connection at Sprayer Body: Prone to loosen and leak while using the wand. A workaround is to route the hose back into the sprayer body and out the top of the rear cover. Wand Holder on Cart: The wand holder does not have sufficient holding grip to secure the wand during typical transport. Wand Holder on Backpack Sprayer: Absent. Wand Spray Nozzle Adapter: Thin construction prone to breakage at the nozzle end. Battery: The newest HD5000 is equipped with a 10 AH lead acid battery that requires disassembly and soldering to replace. Commercial users that may fully discharge their battery will find this a significant limitation. The replacement battery is rated higher at 12 AH. Lead acid battery technology utilized for both battery sizes limits the spray pump to an initial current of less than 3.6 amps. Parts: The pump is most essential replacement part for all Petra sprayers. Pumps are not available on the Petra website for almost all sprayers sold by Petra, except the 2201 pump for the HD4000. This $14.99 reasonably priced pump is rated at 2.6 amps, 3.6 LPM. This pump has been in and out of stock over several months for the HD4000 (was used in older versions of the HD5000 with a slightly reduced flow & head). The current HD5000 uses a 2202 labeled pump rated 3.0 amps, 4.0 LPM, but is not available as a replacement part. After 8 months, I gave up waiting and outsourced a spare pump with the same HD5000 pump specifications and mounting configuration. Commercial users will want to order a spare juice box that includes the battery, smaller rated pump and controls. However, the juice box (not currently listed and usually sold-out when listed) is not listed as a spare part. • Mysterious Thread on HD - 5000
I just bought my HD 5000, I like the unit very much but theres a few things I would change. I hope I can save somebody some time here. I wanted to add an (in-line shut off) between the end of the hose and the sprayer handle. My plan was to be able to shut off the flow and pressure when I was switching from the hand held sprayer to the wand without having to walk back to turn the pump off first. I started looking for the fittings I needed to add the shut off and I thought since they were a proud American company those brass fittings would be good old USA 1/4” - 18 pipe fittings but they had used some other thread type and the standard NPT fittings wouldn’t work. Next I called PetraTools support and ask them what size brass fittings they used on the sprayer and hose and their answer was “I don’t know”. Next I went down to the local Ace Hardware and searched until I found the thread size they used. It’s metric ( M14 - 1.5 ). I searched forever on line and finally found the adapters I needed to make the shutoff valve happen for me but it wasn’t easy. This thread size is quite rare. On another matter when you first use this sprayer you have to prime it. What the product manual doesn’t tell you is (the first time) you use the pump it needs to 25 minutes to prime before it will spray. I had to call tech support to learn this. My personal recommendation is to stay away from that blue dye they suggest you use to be able to see where you’ve sprayed, for me it was a total mess. I spent more time trying cleaning up the dye off my shoes, the machine, the driveway and everything else than I did spraying. From here on out I’ll take my chances on missing a spot. Just a recommendation on the parts bag that attaches to lower back frame of the sprayer. Rather than tying the bag on the frame with the two little black strings they include, I attached the bag to the upper cross bar that’s about waist level with two large tie-wraps. The accessories bag is now attached much more secure and it’s now in easy reach. No more bending over or stooping down to reach the accessory bag. One last thing I don’t know who decided to use a standard 120 volt type AC type connector where the 12 volt charger plugs in but that’s crazy. It’s just too easy for someone who didn’t read the manual to pick up a standard (computer type) AC cord and plug this sprayer into 120 volts destroying the unit. One More Thing: Nothing I’ve seen in the manual or in online videos addresses purging the line on this sprayer so I figured it out on my own and wanted to pass this along. There’s 100’ of line with the his sprayer so when you are through spraying and put fresh water in the tank, turn the sprayer on full power and attach the yellow fan tip to the wand. Depress the handle on the sprayer and hold it. It will take 60 sec before the herbicide you were using is pushed through the hose and you have clean water at the tip. Also when you are beginning to spray a new product attach the yellow fan tip on the wand and depress the handle. The wand will spray water for 60 seconds before the product comes through. For the record the yellow fan tip is just a regulator that I use because it offers a consistent measurement. After purging the 100 foot line attach whichever tip you plan to use and continue. ... show more
