  • Strong, hi-tech, but too sensitive (stops/reverses) for moving an old door
Style: Door Opener
Overall this is a great unit in and of itself. Physically, it required engineering a rectanguloid channel (and re plastered) in our garage ceiling to allow clearance or its track bar - thus it was not an easy retrofit for our previous Sears opener. Two problems that we eventually overcame: 1. it kept reporting a "4-6" error which meant "something" was wrong with the electric eye mechanism that senses if something is in the way near the floor. In the end, the solution was to "turn/point the receiver sensor toward the floor for 15 seconds" (and then go thru the beam re alignment process again). Once resolved, this problem occasionally returns , but is resolved with the pointing-at-floor process adn re programming the range of motion and read-on-below (putting a weight on the door). Putting a black object in front of it for 15 seconds does not resolve it - who knows why it has to be pointed toward the floor, doesn't seem technically logical. 2. Our door is old and a little jerky going up and down in its track/rails. When closing, the Chamberlain unit thinks something was in the way that it ran into, and reverses to the open position. Tech support claims that when you program (set) the range of motion (most open and closed positions of the door), the unit automatically (in parallel) detect how sensitive it needs to be. We did not find this to be a good design solution - it needs to have a separate setting for how sensitive to be for running into objects. We finally had limited success by attaching 30 lbs of steel bar stock to the door and setting the range of motion with that on the door. (and then removing the extra weight of course after programming) It still will hiccup and reverse occasionally. It's almost a game-over (to return it), but it was such an ordeal to install it (with the reconstruction of the ceiling), that we'll live with it for a while at least, and maybe someday we'll need a new door itself that moves more smoothly. BTW phone tech support was US-based and quite patient, knowledgeable, and helpful. If you have an old door, this unit MAY NOT BE FOR YOU. ... show more

  • Exterior keypad is bad
Style: Door Opener
So I bought this about 14 months ago. Literally, right after the one year warranty expired the keypad stopped working. I thought it was the battery, but no. So I read some articles that said that the numbers on the keypad can wear out and to try different numbers. That was the issue. Let me say I am a single person who rarely uses the keypad to begin with, but even if I was a family with a bunch of kids, just over a year is unacceptable. So now I have to think that in another year I will have to spend $50 on a new keypad, and then, what, every 2 years. My old craftsman keypad lasted 20 years and was still working when the opener died. The garage door opener itself has been working well and it is unbelievably quiet. My daughter dropped by to visit one night and came in through the garage. It was so quiet I didn’t hear her coming and almost had a heart attack. My old one always was like an alarm. The WiFi doesn’t work, but I think that’s Comcast’s fault. I have crappy internet service. I digress…… All in all a great opener so far, but for the crappy keypad. ... show more

  • Works better than my liftmaster
Style: Door Opener
This has twice the range as my liftmaster, quieter and nicer as it slows down before hitting the ground. So far so good. Lets see how long it lasts. The liftmaster has been reliable for 7 years.

  • Ultra quiet door opener
Style: Door Opener
This opener replaces a 15 year old Liftmaster chain drive opener. I was looking for a quiet opener as the garage is below a bedroom. Wow is all I need to say. It fits the bill and was a easy install.

  • Premium features are not cheap
Style: Door Opener
This unit has features that provide convenience and security. I have three doors with similar openers. With my iphone, these openers alert me when they cycle. I can see door status and operate them remotely. With many years of using these internet based features I find they are rock steady with almost no system down time. With the battery backup feature DC drive motors are employed and they have acceleration at initiation and completion of the cycles. The motor slowly starts and nearing the end of a cycle, it slows down so there is no start stop jerking. They are extremely quiet. If there is a power failure, the doors still operate. Using provided transmitters, vehicle Homelink or the outside button pad I can gain access to my house even without utility power. The light is bright internal LED. On the negative side, this unit replaces a similar Chamberlain opener made in 2015 which intermittently failed to remember the open/close stops resulting in failure to close. Reprogramming the stops restored function for a few days and then the failure returned. Based on the high cost of a replacement main board, I opted to buy this new opener. So for you math lovers a life span of 7 years equates to about $40/year to own one of these. (I have three). If you want the internet intelligence and do not want to buy a new opener, Chamberlain makes a kit that adds that functionality to a non-smart opener. (Chamberlain MyQ Wi-Fi Smart Garage Door Hub - Model Number MYQ-G0302) I have one of these kits and it integrates into the myQ app perfectly. As far as Alexa integration, I looked at that and it appears convoluted so I didn't lose a lot of time on it. I expected more than 7 years life from my previous unit and hope for 10-15 with the new one. However, in my experience more complexity breeds higher failure rates but buzzers and bells thrill me so I will live with that. ... show more
