  • Solid Garage Door Opener
When buying a door opener it’s pretty important to read the requirements and assume it’s going to be a fresh install. If it says you need an extension kit for an 8’ door……you will need one whether you think you shouldn’t or not. I chose not to reuse any of the existing wiring from the old openers sensors or keypad. Install was pretty straight forward without any issues. Sensors were easy to adjust. WiFi set up in the MyQ app was a breeze. It’s definitely quieter than my previous chain drive unit. I’d expect some that think it’s just as loud are hearing a lot of roller noise etc which would occur regardless of drive type. The motor itself is quiet. It’s not as quiet as the $400 models but it’s quiet. ... show more

  • Advertised as ultra- quiet. Is definitely not quiet. Very loud.
I had a previous Chamberlain belt drive opener. Was very quiet. This newer model, advertised as “ultra- quiet” is very loud. Sound is coming from the motor unit, not belt drive or door itself. Last straw was when I tried to return it, even though was Prime delivery, I have to pay to return this heavy unit to get a refund or replacement. Very misleading and disappointing. ... show more

  • I'm so sorry I bought this operator!
Bought this to replace my barely 20-year-old Chamberlain door operator that failed. I should have just purchased a replacement logic board for my original operator. But no, I saw some of the neat features this operator is supposed to have and thought that being very similar to my original operator, the installation would go quickly and painlessly. I was very wrong. I have an 8' high overhead door. The B2202 clearly states on the package, you'll need the 8' extension kit if your door is 8' or taller (up to 10' I believe). I took down the old unit and assembled the new one next to it. Oddly enough, they were the same length. I used the "3D" instructions app downloaded to my phone to assemble the unit. The 3D aspect is nice because you can zoom in and rotate views to properly identify parts and see how they are installed from any angle. However, the 3D instructions didn't know about the extension kit and therefore made no reference to it. I ended up assembling the unit without the kit. Since it was the same length as the old unit, I decided to install it anyway (without the extension kit). Once installed, the unit operated as predicted. It stopped about three or four inches short of fully opening the door (unlike the old unit that fully opened the door). Closely comparing the old and new unit revealed some seemingly minor design changes that ultimately shortened the run length of the door shuttle, which in the old unit was just enough to allow for an 8’ door height. I bought the belt drive as it's supposed to be very quiet. The old chain drive unit was VERY loud. The new belt drive unit is almost as loud as the old unit. Then I tried to program my Lincoln MKZ's built-in door operator buttons to the new unit. No Joy. My car uses the Lear Car2U opener protocol. My wife's Subaru uses the HomeLink opener protocol. The B2202 garage door opener uses the new Security+ 2.0 protocol (a solution looking for a problem). The new protocol is incompatible with the old rolling code protocols. You can buy a “repeater” that plugs into a wall outlet in the garage, and allegedly pairs with the old rolling code transmitter and relays the open/close request to the new Security+ 2.0 door operator. I bought one but after futzing with it for two or three days, sent it back. Of course, by installing the “repeater” to allow the use of the old remotes, the security advantage (if any) of the Security+ 2.0 goes right out the window. Oddly enough, the old door operator unit was compatible with both of our car’s built-in opener buttons. And for the record, I can’t find much if any information about bad guys breaching the old “rolling code” security protocol. The old remotes with dip switch fixed codes are a security risk, but most of those are gone. Again, Security+ 2.0, a solution looking for a problem. You’ll also be replacing the in-garage push button because the Security + 2.0 protocol doesn’t use a simple momentary contact switch to trigger the door. Security+ 2.0 requires a button that must be paired with the unit because it sends a code through the wire from the wall mounted garage door button (that’s located inside the garage) to the door operator. I had a nice motion activated wall button that turned on the door operator’s light as soon as you walked into the garage and also operated the door. That’s in the trash now, but a new $36 unit that performs the same function is on its way to me. I hope it works a lot better than the “repeater”. And of course, there are two last gotchas coming from this product. I can look forward to getting in the attic over the garage this fall (when the temperature drops considerably) to install a new hanger for the unit, because after adding the $50 extension kit (so the door will open fully), the existing hanger will be too close to the garage door to hang the motor unit from. And after relocating the motor unit, I’ll bet the darn thing will be just a few inches short of reaching the ceiling outlet the original unit was plugged into. To be fair to the unit, it does have one feature I like. The MyQ or Wi-Fi connectivity is nice for a few reasons. Once you install the MyQ app on your mobile device, and assuming your Wi-Fi signal is strong enough to reach the motor unit, you can control the door from your mobile device. This means you can: 1. Open and close the door from anywhere you have internet access, 2. Get the open/closed status of the door online, 3. Be notified when the door is opened or closed. 4. Have Amazon leave packages in your garage if you select that delivery option (too bad porch pirates). This is no replacement for a remote operator button in your car, but for allowing someone access to your home when you’re not there (without handing out keys or codes) it’s handy. You can accomplish most or all of this with a Wi-Fi add-on for your existing “dumb” door. When all is said and done, I really wish I would have just fixed my old door operator unit. If you’re replacing an existing unit, this is not a drop-in replacement. The Security+ 2.0 is particularly frustrating no matter what, and the need for an extension kit if you have an 8’ or taller door will make the installation as difficult as a new installation. Thanks Chamberlain! ... show more

  • DO NOT BUY if you care about home automation
I bought Chamberlain garage door openers and integrated them into my home automation environment. Now Chamberlain has blocked API access, preventing users from monitoring and controlling their own products. They took my money and changed the functionality in the name of "security." Not cool.
