Description

You can now bring the world's most exotic reefs into your home with CaribSea's Arag-Alive substrates. It is developed from CaribSea's cooperation with public aquariums and zoological parks, where authenticity is a must. Arag-Alive helps maintain a proper pH for the life of your aquarium without the constant addition of chemicals, and creates a biological balance to discourage nuisance algae. Arag-Alive contains millions of bacteria per pound specially engineered for aggressive waste reduction in closed systems like your aquarium. Arag- Alive is engineered to suppress “new tank syndrome” and compress the ammonia cycle. It begins to cycle your aquarium instantly. In fact, independent labs prove Arag-Alive cycles your aquarium days faster than other brands.

  • Used for freshwater by accident, still good substrate
Size: 20 lb
I forgot how to read and bought this for my new 125g African cichlid tank. I rinsed a few times, did a couple water changes, and checked the salinity before adding my fish, to make sure it was safe and it seems fine. I’ve had my 17 juvenile star Sapphire’s in there for a couple weeks now and they’re doing very well and the sand looks nice. ... show more

  • Skipped the ammonia phase of my cycle!
Size: 20 lb
I decided to go with this, since I was using dead/dry rock for a custom aqua scape. And boy am I glad I did… I set up the tank and added 2 fish a couple days later (take that you rotting shrimp cyclers). Of course I had a bottle of Prime on standby, in case there was an ammonia spike. I used Stability per instructions as well for the bacteria. Like the title says… testing with an API kit and a SeaChem Ammonia disk, I never saw any ammonia! NONE! After a couple of weeks, nitrite started to climb, then of course fell, leading to nitrate. Not exactly an instant cycle, because I still went through the nitrite phase… but this live sand and stability allowed the tank to start processing the ammonia from day 3. Disclaimer: I can only assume that the sand was the biggest contributor, since the Stability just puts bacteria in the water so it can’t find surfaces to multiply on. It very well could have been the combo that did the trick. ... show more

  • Still cloudy
Size: 20 lb
I love the fiji pink sand. Unfortunately I lost my home/ tanks due to a wild fire. I'm finally getting tanks up and going again. A 40 galon and 200. I bought multiple bags of sand. Usually come with a magnetic clarifier. I bought 7 or 8 bags and only 2 had the clarifier. One was open and leaked into the sand before I had opened the bag and I put it in the 40 gallon. That tank cleared up after 2-3 days. The other clarifier went into the 200 gallon but was not enough. On day 5, and tank is still extremely cloudy. That clarifier makes a huge difference. With out it, tank will stay cloudy for a long time unless you rinse the sand. But you are supposed to with this sand because of the live bacteria it contains. If it had the clarifier it would be 5 stars all day. This is not a sellers issue. They got me the bags quickly. This was just a mishap at the packaging plant. Wouldn't stop me from buying again. Just frustrating to still have a cloudy tank after this many days ... show more

  • Great color, perfect grain size, my favorite salt water substrate
Size: 20 lb
I love this stuff, it's been my favorite for over a decade - great color, ideal grain size, not either dust or fine gravel. There are a couple things to remember when you order. First, you might need more weight compared with dry-shipped substate, because some is water weight, not a lot, you'd never noticed in a little tank, but it may add up to an extra bag in a large tank that uses several. Second, you probably don't want to wash it, because it defeats the purpose of it being shipped wet with salt water, ready to host beneficial bacteria, if you're going to soak it with fresh water to rinse it. No idea how long it would take to balance out again. It claims to contain live bacteria - how much is still alive after a long time in a bag is anyone's guess, but it's certainly much more ready to host than dry sand. If you're using it for cichlids, this doesn't apply, wash the hell out of it, they dig a lot, and you'll want all the fine stuff gone. What I do is put an Aquaclear filter on the tank, fill it with just the sponges, and every time the tank is starting to clear at all, I stir the sand gently, so the fine stuff either settles to the bottom or floats into the water. After a few days, I can stir it without it really clouding the water, and that way, I know that for the life of the tank, I can gently disturb the sand without fear of clouding it for days. If you don't mind changing it a couple times a day, you can speed this along by packing filter floss on top of the sponge for a finer filtration layer. ... show more
