Description

Fluval Stratum is the ideal aquarium substrate for stimulating the growth of aquatic plants in freshwater aquariums. Plant roots easily penetrate and spread throughout the substrate, allowing live aquarium plants to obtain a variety of key, readily available nutrients that will make them flourish. The addition of Fluval Plant Micronutrients will ensure a full complement of essential macro and micro. The substrate's light, non-compacting, porous structure is also highly beneficial to nitrifying bacteria, which rapidly colonize the vast porous surface, providing optimal aquarium water quality for real plants. Fluval Stratum's inherent properties will help support a neutral to slightly acidic pH, ideal for most plant species and species of tropical fish or shrimp normally kept in planted aquariums. Fluval Stratum also provides new aquarium shrimp with the ideal refuge, allowing them to escape predation until they are large enough to emerge into the shrimp tank. This highly attractive substrate will not discolor water and helps control organic discoloration usually present when natural driftwood aquarium décor is used. For more fish tank accessories check out the other Fluval products including Fluval aquariums, aquarium filters, filter media, aquarium heaters, aquarium air pumps, aquarium lights, fake plants, aquarium thermometer, fish food, aquarium gravel, planted aquarium tools, fish tank decorations and aquarium stands. Fluval has a wide variety of products that are perfect for your pet fish, shrimp, or betta fish to enjoy in any large fish tank, small fish tank, freshwater tank or in a saltwater tank. The Fluval Plant and Shrimp Stratum is the perfect substrate for planted aquariums and is available in multiple sizes; available as a 4.4 lb. bag, an 8.8 lb. bag and a 17.6 lb. bag.

  • Very disappointed.
Color: Stratum Size: 8.8 Ounce (Pack of 1)
0/10. Very disappointed. It was taped back up, and whoever had this beforehand, emptied out all the aquarium substrate and put their backyard dirt inside and returned it apparently. I was the one who received it. Luckily, I have purchased this dirt before and I know what it is supposed to look like. I still have some left in my old bag and I took a picture of what I received, and what it is supposed to look like. First picture is what was in the bag I received. Next picture is what the real substrate is and meant to look like. Someone should have inspected this first before sending it off. ... show more

  • Looks great!
Color: Stratum Size: 1.1 Pound (Pack of 1)
So I just wanted to leave my initial impressions, but then will revise this product the more I use it. I purchased the 17.6 pound bag for my 6 Gallon Fluval Edge. A little overkill but for the price I could not resist. I used a little over a half of a bag to get about 2 1/2 inches of depth. I was a little hesitant to purchase this product based on some of the reviews, but I did not encounter any of those. Some top complaints were that it was hard to plant in, or that it was dusty, or that the substrate crumbled and turned into mud. None of that happened for me, but planting too close to another plant can be problematic. My procedure is as followed. Step 1: Pour into tank to desired depth, and spread around. ** Special Note: I did not rinse prior to adding to the tank. ** Step 2: Place hand inside tank, and begin filling it with water using your hand as a buffer. Pour slowly. ** Fill only to moisten the substrate ** Step 3: With the substrate moistened, begin planting your plants. Don't plant them too close or it may loosen and cause another to lift up. Step 4: Begin filling tank once you're fully decorated. I use the hand method to buffer the flow of water, and I filled slowly. There was a "slight" amount of cloudiness but that cleared up a few minutes after turning the filter on. The appearance of this substrate is a chocolate color and will really make your plants pop with their greens. Pictures will be added here in the future. The real test will be how this product helps my plants, most importantly my dwarf hairgrass which always struggled in my inert sand I had in prior. ... show more

  • Rage-Inducing - Beginners Beware
Color: Stratum Size: 8.8 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I've read so many reviews, watched so many YouTube videos, explored forums, and more. This product comes highly recommended. I bought this for a small, heavily planted aquarium that I'm putting together that may also, one day, be the home to a couple of small fish and shrimp. Let me say, trying to use this stuff is absolutely infuriating. It's density is so low, that, as one person commented, "It's light trying to plant something in styrofoam balls in water." Alone, it's incredibly challenging to create slope with in your tank. As soon as it becomes wet, it wants to slide. The manufacturer suggests a light rinse in a collander before using. We did that until most of the dust was gone and the water ran clear and then began adding to our tank. I added water until it was just at the level of the top of the substrate and then began planting. The particulate matter, however, made visibility impossible. We couldn't get our delicate plants like the dwarf baby tears to hold onto anything. We managed to get the amazon swords and ludwigia to stay in place, though some floated out of the substrate as we added water. Over night much of the cloudiness in the water cleared, but not completely. We decided to try to plant the baby tears again, but quickly found there was no getting them to stay in place in this substrate. As we worked, the amazon swords popped out with only the barest of disturbance. I've since ordered the long tweezers you see the YouTubers using, but, as I've seen other reviewers comment, I don't hold out much hope for success even with those. I am increasingly aware this hobby requires patience, and that's OK, however, I am tempted to switch to Black Fluorite. I just wish I'd read a review like this. It's not necessarily a bad product, but if you're new to the hobby like I am, just be aware, it's incredibly hard to work with. ... show more

  • Love this stuff!
Color: Stratum Size: 1.1 Pound (Pack of 1)
I keep neocaridina shrimp, various nano shrimp, khuli loaches, aufwachs grazers, etc. and have used this substrate exclusively in my high tech community tanks for 1.5 years and I love it! The plants love it, the khuli loaches like to burrow in it, and my shrimp colony has always bred prolifically. Since I have never used another substrate, I can't compare/contrast it to anything else. I can't say if it has any extra benefits for neocaridina shrimp, but would probably be a great option for caridina shrimp as it will buffer your PH and make it slightly more acidic. I have tried rinsing this product before adding it to the aquarium, and also adding it to the aquarium straight out of the bag. Yes, it can initially cloud your water a bit just like any other aquasoil, but if you add water to your tank carefully and correctly after planting (i use a plastic sheet to cover the substrate and slowly pour the water on top of this and then remove it once the tank is about halfway full) you can eliminate much of the clouding and some water polishing filter floss like polyester filling from the craft store (make sure you get the kind without any chemicals in it!) will clear up any remaining cloudiness from the substrate in a matter of hours, whether you rinse the substrate first or not. Two 17.6 bags is more than enough to fill my 30 gallon tank and get some height and depth in ares of the aquascape. I would still recommend root tabs for heavy root feeding plants, especially if you are running a high tech tank. With a low tech tank and easy to care for plants, the soil, some basic water column ferts, and flourish excel will probably suffice. In the pic you can see my most recent aquascape using this substrate after about 20 days of growth. Glossostigma is carpeting! ... show more
