  • Great quality weights for the price! These are awesome! Great quality weights for the price! These are awesome!
After lifting in Jr. High as a football player, and for a while in college and not knowing a thing about weightlifting, I decided as a 37 year old to get back into weightlifting. I have been lifting for over a year now and I've been using the standard weights. The standard weights were good enough for a while, but I missed the quality weights that we had when I was lifting back in school, and I needed to rep more weight that what my standard dumbbell set would hold. I have had my eye on getting an Olympic weight set like this for a while now, and when a good deal on this set popped up on a Deal of the Day just before Christmas, I jumped on it. I was not expecting anything but a basic Olympic set. When the delivery arrived, I was surprised to see the high quality black barbell and the coated plates with he hand grips. I'm not sure why I didn't expect this, maybe I had not seen anything even close to this set with these features for this price. It was really a great deal. I use the weights every day... well, at least 3 days a week :) and they are really nice. I'm really excited to have them and don't tell my wife, but I'm actually looking to pick up a second set of these! Don't skip these if you're looking to upgrade from a standard barbell set. Pros: Olympic plates with what seems like powder coating. A nice looking black barbell. Delivery. Compared to picking this up at the store, this is really nice. Cons: They don't lift themselves. Eat right or these won't help you. :) Overall: I really think these are some nice weights for the DIY home gym guy, they could also make a nice set for any iron pumping guy wanting to move his workout home, or have a set for days when he can't make it to the gym. Ignore my messy garage floor in the photo. They look nice in my workout area! ... show more

  • Must Have for any Home gym!!
Got this as a Christmas Gift for myself. I absolutely love it! You can't honestly take your weight training to the next level without an Olympic weight set. I hate going to the gym so I put together my own home gym instead (can't make any excuses if your gym is in your own home) The is comes with: 1 45lb Olympic bar 2 45lbs Olympic plates 2 35lbs Olympic plates 2 25lbs Olympic plates 2 10lbs Olympic plates 4 5lbs Olympic plates 2 2.5lbs Olympic plates 1 Pair pair of Spring collar. When I purchase this, it was on sale for $289.50 with FREE prime shipping! This is the best deal I've found...I shopped around and everywhere else (Modells, Wal-mart, Sports Authority) charges $100+ just to ship, let alone sell 300lbs of weights for under $300. I got mine in 5 boxes over the course of two days. Yes some other reviewers mentioned they are not as nice as the fancy rubber coated sets...but honestly your buying it for the actual weight and performance who cares what it looks like. At the end of the day you get this to make YOU look better, get stronger and improve your level of fitness. 300lbs worth of adjustable weight is perfect to build and grow at any fitness level. Must have for Bench/Incline/Decline Presses, Military press, Squats and Dead-lifts. Also great for bicep curls, barbell rows, skull crushers. Really with these you have essentially and endless variety of exercises. Get a bench and a multi press rack to go with these and you've got everything you'll ever need to develop the perfect body. (Well almost everything, proper nutrition is important too) ... show more

  • The other reviews had me worried, but it's a great set! The other reviews had me worried, but it's a great set!
Color: Grey
I almost didn't buy this set because reviewers had me quite worried, but I'm glad I did. This isn't the best set you can get, that's for sure, but it is a good set for the price, and the fact that it shipped to my door for free is impressive. The weights are not perfect, I don't have a lot of experience with buying weights, but I assume most have some variance. My 10s weighed in at 10.5 lbs. My 25s weighed in at 25.3 lbs. My 45s weighed in at 43.7. Certainly this could be better, but I'm more than happy with it as-is. Plus, unlike what other reviewers have said, I find that they look quite nice (Pictured). They could be nicer, they could be rubber, they could have hand grips, but I had no reason to expect them to (based on the description) so I wont put them down on that. The bar, as many reviewers stated isn't perfect either. I did notice what appears to be a little bit of rust on the inside as other reviewers have stated. But, it cleaned up alright with a melamine pad and doesn't seem as though it will cause me any trouble, but I'll get back here if it does. The knurling seems fine to me, comparable to that of the gym (24 hour). I am not the strongest guy, but I had no trouble gripping during 225 lb dead-lifts. So, I am happy with that as well. Back to the weights... I will admit that one of them didn't "fit on the bar" so well. I didn't have to sand it down or anything, but it did take a little bit of coercion. Since the first time, it fits on just fine, but it did cause some scratches on the bar itself (Pictured). In the end, it's a good budget weight-set and with the possible exception of the bar, I see it lasting a good long time. I also am pleased with the looks of it all. I am far from embarrassed by the set. It doesn't look like a hand-me-down/beat-up set. They aren't plastic covered cement, they don't have chips coming out of it (except a little scratching inside the hole (Pictured)). ... show more

  • Excellent value for what you're paying for, which is the mass, not anything else
Color: Grey
Wow, some people just cannot be pleased. Reading some of these reviews, people sure are nit-picky about their weights (complaints about the paint chipping and such). When you're shopping for weights, you're shopping for one thing and that's mass. Just massive objects to throw around to gain muscle. This is by far, the best-valued starter set you're going to find on Amazon (or in any brick & mortar store). The only exception to this fact is if you find a used set on Craigslist or another personal ad. I bought the cheapest option, the grey weights with not hand holds. If you get yourself a stand to put these plates on, you don't need the fancier options. This tier 1 level set will be perfect for your beginner gains period. 300 lbs is a lot and if you make it through the first year with proper technique, you can, with satisfaction and confidence, purchase some of the nicer, more expensive kinds (like the rubber matted option @ ~ $500). Another good thing is you can still use these weights, they're not going to fall apart anytime soon. I believe the bar holds ~500lbs. Again, a great value as a 7ft barbell is around $100 on Amazon. The weights and the barbell may be scratched up a bit from shipping, but that's to be expected and honestly, who cares? They're weights, not an HDTV. Also, you need to have some common sense and realize that anything except the above-mentioned rubber padded weights are not protected from damage associated with being dropped. So if you're doing heavy-lifting and you fail a set and drop these things on your floor, there's a chance you could do some damage. Do what I did and get a pair of adjustable saw horses for an improvised catch system. That way, you can lift heavy with confidence that you can release the weights safely and they won't slam to the floor, causing damage/injury. Most saw horses are rated at over 1,000 lbs, so they can take it. ... show more

  • I'd just like to say I knew what I was getting into ...
Color: Grey
To start this off, I'd just like to say I knew what I was getting into buying a low priced weight set like this. I know what good barbells costs, and what tolerances CAP plates are generally made to. Even knowing this, there's no way I could have known just how poorly CAP prides itself in its products. The order arrived in 5 packages, 4 with weights, and 1 being the bar. The plates were packaged well, nothing to complain there. The bar wasn't even close to enough packaging. Two thin cardboard sleeves (one of which fell off) are all that covered the ends of the barbell. Consequently, by the time the bar arrived it was covered in a significant number of scuffs, scrapes, and dings. Large portions had its finish worn off all together. The plates were as expected, relatively close to their stated weight with slightly larger than 2" holes. The holes on cheap castings are generally made larger than 2" so that with casting defects, they still fit on a barbell. It's why cheap iron plates have that characteristic slop on floor exercises. Even with this precaution, it was visually apparent that many of these plates would not fit on a barbell. 30 minutes with a file fixed them all, but its incredible to me that quality control would allow such obvious defects to pass through. Now back to the barbell. Upon its arrival, there was an obvious coating of rust that came from the barbell sleeves. The outside of the bar appears to have been coated with paint (rather spottily, however). The knurling is light, inconsistent, and just poorly done in general. Sleeve rotation is as bad as one can imagine. Inside the sleeves everything is bare metal (nothing wrong with that, this is a cheap barbell after all). What I do object to, however, is the complete lack of preservation by CAP. Everything unfinished has a thick coat of rust, which comes out of the ends when the sleeves are rotated. I was going to sell this bar, but it's not even worth it without some work on my part. Get this set for the weights if the price is right, and expect to do some work. Otherwise avoid. CAP products are just sh*t. ... show more

  • ... included in the 300) of steel delivered is a great deal. The weights are all fine
Color: Grey
I got this on sale for $160 so for that price the 255lbs (45lb bar included in the 300) of steel delivered is a great deal. The weights are all fine, mine had no rust not that I really care. The bar is really bad, but I guess if you were just starting out it is better than nothing. My recommendation if you get this set, is first thing take apart the bar bell and clean all the rust off the bushings inside (It's a cut rusted steel pipe). There are videos on youtube showing you how to do this. Sand it down until it's smooth and then put lithium grease all over it. That fix didn't make it nearly as nice as my Rougue Ohio bar but it was still a least a decent beater bar. The knurling on it is quite poor, it's been painted over so I wouldn't do any great load of weight with this. ... show more

  • Great price but poor casting; you get what you pay for.
Color: Grey
For a home gym, it is about the cheapest 300 lb set you can get, and that is pretty nice. I bought the gray set because it was less than $1 per lb and included a bar. Pretty spectacular a value. DO NOT expect pretty, smooth plates like you find in a commercial gym. The casting is bad -- so bad that on one of the 35's, I had to buy a metal file and file inside the hole for the bar because it would not fit on the bar -- the casting is so sloppy that there were 'high points' on the bar hole. Even after filing, the plate scratches and scrapes the bar and weight rack holder whenever you put the plate on the bar or on the weight holder -- that really sucks. It is usable, but it scratches all of my other equipment. And it is only usable because I spent $10 on a "half round" metal file and spent 20 minutes filing to get the thing to be usable. That kind of sucks. The bar is not high quality, but seems solid. I have no concerns about the bar snapping if you are using under 400# or so. If you are an elite deadlifter or squatter, and you are shooting for 500 to 1000, you are crazy if you do not go out and buy yourself an elite level bar. The weights themselves can be crap, but the bar better bear the weight or you can have a real problem. I am not likely ever going to squat or deadlift more than 300-400 or bench in the 200-300 range, so for a home gym, this is good enough, I do sort of wish I just would have spent an extra $100 and gotten better quality. Sticks in my craw a little bit that I spent money and have a plate that scratched my other equipment. But, you get what you pay for and hey, they are weights. They will work. ... show more

  • Excellent for the Price! (Plates = Great | Bar = Meh & is 37.5lbs NOT 45lbs)
Color: Black
The overall value is wonderful as one cannot get plates for this price (roughly $1 per 1 lbs.; i.e., one gets 300olbs of plates/weights for $281.00/$300.00 with taxes, but the caveat of the set is that the bar is sprayed or coated, so that one cannot use the diamond-cutting on the bar like all other Olympic bars, which one needs for gripping, unless one always uses gloves and does not care for improving one's grip strength. ***However (caveat), the bar is NOT 45lbsa, it is ONLY 37.5lbs (oddly).*** Nevertheless, I use FatGrips, so the coating over the diamond-cutting is irrelevant, but it being sprayed over makes the bar cheap. Notwithstanding, the overall weight or balance of the bar is decent or fine. It is black, which is fine too, but the photo has a Chrome one. And there is also a bit of rusting around the collars, which means the bar was sitting around for a while as it is not coated with an anti-oxidation chemicals. Suffice ti to say, I recommend the Archon Olympic Bar (7', 45lbs, 28mm, Oxidation coated; 700lb capacity: it is fantastic! Regarding the plates, the are great, as long as one does not mind or care if the paint on them is chipped/chipping off, which I don't, but something to know. I.e., they are not in perfect condition. Again, I highly recommend the Archon Olympic Bar as it is a superior bar or purchase the FatGrips (3 different sizes) and you will circumvent the issue of bar. ... show more
