I'm very familiar with DBs having used many sets for decades in both commercial and home gyms. I've used every type imaginable. These are pretty good given the price is the best I found anywhere, they are hex with rubber coating and the minimal footprint stand is included. With Amazon prime even shipping was free which is almost unheard of for DBs. No issues. The rack is not 100% perfect but works fine for my needs. Same with the DBs. They rubber will get some dents and dings but I'd prefer that to rust and damage in my home from not coated ones. I wish I could get another set from 30 - 50 or 30 - 70 lbs but will keep searching. FWIW, I searched all over my local region (mid size US city) as well as online, used and new, Nothing came close in price and quality. Im very sensitive to strong smell - especially PVC and rubber. These stunk when I opened the boxes but I used them today and never even wiped them down as others had and didn't notice a strong smell. If I notice any odor tomorrow, I'll wipe down the rubber with dawn and water, For size reference, the white shelf beside the DB stand is 3 ft long, 1 ft deep and about hip high. I was planing to store my DBs in the garage but since th rack is som compact, I left them right in my Living Room where I workout. ... show more

Yes, as other reviews say, they do initially have a rubber smell. I took advice of others and immediately washed in Dawn dish liquid and dried off. Haven't had anymore odors. Rack is sturdy enough and was easy to assemble and fits great in my little corner. I did need a ratchet wrench to help with assembly, but with something like this, to me, that's expected to provide some tools. Weights are just what I expected amd perfect for my needs. This is a really nice dumbbell set! They look just like pictured. The stand is easy to assemble, very sturdy and maximizes efficiency of storage space. The hardware and an Allen Key are included but you'll need something to grip the nuts -I found that a 13mm ratcheting wrench works great but a 13mm regular wrench would be fine as well. You could use a socket but the risk of over-torquing the bolts becomes a factor. The grips on the weights are ergonomic for med to x-lg hands and are knurled for a safer grip. I think even small hands would not have a grip issue. The stand is designed so that the weights are easily removed and replaced with ease. The dumbbell weighted ends are rubber coated for safety (though I strongly recommend against a drop-test with your feet). I am very pleased with my purchase and look forward to the reward of improved physical fitness in the coming months and years. I highly recommend this dumbbell set! ... show more

These dumbbells are pretty nice and the model I bought with chrome handles is a great buy at about $1.30+/lb including the rack. Oddly, other handle options were way more expensive, making the value assessment for those styles less positive. Assembling the rack was straightforward- do it on a level surface like a concrete floor- and the steel construction is sturdy and compact. The notches that hold the weights are edged in rubber . They include a few extra pieces of hardware which is really appreciated. I would advise purchasers to unpack outdoors as the dumbbells come in 3 heavy cartons plus a fourth for the rack, and the rack carton had large oil stains on it. The dumbbells stink to high heaven of rubber and machine oil. Washing them helped some. The rubber coating seems to be just that- rubber- and not neoprene as on competitors. That's OK if you aren't latex allergic (synthetic rubber wouldn't be a problem in this regard, presumably). Neoprene is also more durable, less likely to mark floors and smells better, but is also more expensive to make. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with these and would recommend them to anyone looking for a very reasonable price on new dumbbells. UPDATE: I initially thought the dumbbells smelled better after I washed them with dish detergent. I was wrong. They still reek. I hope the smell dissipates eventually. ... show more

So, I knew the smell of this was going to be bad, based on the many, many reviews mentioning how bad it is. It still didn't prepare me for the truly foul and penetrating smell of these. I left them outdoors in the sun for 45 days(!), dousing them heavily with GreenClean, letting them bake in the sun, letting them get rained on. Then, I scrubbed them vigorously with a stiff brush and Lava brand pumice soap. I just took them back outside because of the odor filling up my weight room, and then coming into the rest of my house. I figured 45 days would be plenty. I had recently bought a horse stall pad to put under my weight equipment, and it took two weeks with the same treatment before it was worth of taking its place indoors. I am confident these will one day make it indoors...but this is not that day. Would I put up with this smell if the set turned out to be perfect, exactly what I wanted? No. But they are hear now, weeks past the return date. I got them on sale at a good price. Surely if the smell will just wear off they will be great? Unfortunately, there's a deal killer in the package. The stand is so narrow that I can only fit two fingers in between the two supports when I go to lift these. There's a full inch wasted outside the two prongs of the holder. Why not widen the thing and allow me to pick up the weights using my actual four-fingered hand?! This narrowness will be a daily annoyance, and it devalues the set to basically worthless for me. I will sell this set and buy something better. The weights themselves are great, if you discount the smell. The handles spent time outdoors through severe thunderstorms and the handles (are they stainless steel? I'm unsure of the exact material) never rusted. The base is stable and it is organized well, with the smaller weights on top (although, now that I think about it, maybe the other way is more intuitive). The holder is rock steady, and the set is appropriately weighted for the vast majority of home users, making the set appropriate for home use. That said, the issues with the smell and the annoying not-able-to-fit-my-hand-in-between-the-supports-to-actually-pick-up-the-weights problem make this a no-go. I didn't mention the filthy amount of...whatever that came off the items when I scrubbed. Oil? And the fact that they stained by white tub (stains that still remain). Next time I guess I will go with metal-ended weights, or at least check the reviews to see about the smell issue. ... show more
