  • Good print quality. 3rd party ink friendly.
Style: Printer Color: Black
This review is for the Canon TR8620. Running away from bad experiences with HP printers and that company's anti-consumer practices (i.e. programming their printers with kill switches, rejecting generic inks, and suspicious subscription services) gave me enough motivation to search for better or less evil alternatives. I bought this Canon printer with some reservation but so far my experience has been very positive. The printing quality when using the TR8620 at default settings looks pretty good. Black text printing looks sharp and the black color looks, well, black. Not reddish black or watered down black but true black (as you would expect). Color printing is also pretty good with some slight grainy-ness at default settings (using plain paper though). I like that the printer asked for permission to "call home". I've grown wary of printers reporting to their makers. If you want to be able to print with your cellphone you must give the printer permission to access the Internet and Canon's related online communication services for the feature. I like that (so far) I can use 3rd party ink without the printer refusing to operate. Being able to choose what kind of ink to use, whether it is official or not, is important to me. I don't know what counter measures Canon has put in place on the printer (if any) but being able to choose promotes a lot of goodwill. I like the touch panel's size. It's big enough to see and operate. The "Scan to PC" feature just works. I can begin scanning from the printer without having to do anything on the laptop. The printer guesses what format to use (PDF or JPG) when scanning documents or photos. Saves me the trouble of having to convert formats after scanning. If using the document feeder on top while scanning then the printer will automatically merge the scans into one PDF for you. All of this can be manually overridden should you need to. As much as I liked the auto document feeder (ADF) attachment I did run into some trouble. One time after an hour or so of use the printer began complaining the ADF was jammed even though there was no paper jam. The computer also started giving "cannot communicate to scanner" error messages. After searching the Internet I found a support page at Canon's website that said the ADF was susceptible to heat and high humidity. Although I can still use the flatbed side of the printer when this quirk happens, I was a little bummed out. Months later I learned (after trial and error) the printer sometimes has trouble re-connecting to the monitoring tool on my laptop after long periods of inactivity. Restarting one or both devices usually fixes it for me. As other reviewers have said the plastic parts that make up the printer's many trays feel kind of flimsy. It gives the impression that it could break easily. On the other hand the trays can be quickly tucked away when not in use. It is worth mentioning the printer's initial setup requires an Internet connection. Canon designed the install process as a website that takes you through a series of short presentations. You can choose to see pictures or watch "how to" videos as you go through the motions. You can't just jump to the "Download Drivers" section and be done with it. Truth to be told I felt impatient and just wanted to skip it all but I still found it helpful. I later learned there is a download link at Canon's website but you have to search for it on your own. Configuring Wi-Fi settings was automatic. At some point the installation program uses your laptop's own Wi-Fi to connect directly to the printer and transfer your PC's network settings to it. After this is completed the install program switches back your home network and you are done. It took me about 20-30 minutes to set it all up. Once the printer was on the network, adding it to other family member's laptops was a piece of cake. Using Windows 10 own settings application all I had to do was click on the "Add a printer or scanner". Windows automatically found the printer and installed the necessary software. Other than the quirks regarding the ADF and plastic tray I am very pleased with this purchase. It does everything I need and it meets my expectations. Here's hoping the printer will last for many years to come. ... show more

  • Thrilled with it!
Style: Printer Color: Black
Haven't used the fax or scan features yet, but thrilled with print and copy. Functions much like a big office unit. Set up took me a couple of hrs and much frustration and not thrilled with the manual being only online, but so far very happy with the unit and Canon support was excellent, professional and quick. Quick WIFI set up didn't work for me, but manual set up was very easy and quick. You will want to change the default paper tray to the rear tray as it holds more paper and I had to call support to figure out how to get it to stop copying one particular document on two sides. Different applications have different print screens so that option isn't always in the same place depending on the app you are using. In Word there is a box for two sided under Layout in the print screen which will override your default for one sided. As described by another user, it did give a jam message when there was no jam. I shut it off and let it cool down and it was fine. Excellent value so for the money. Set up scan and fax, the latter easy peasey. Scan gave me problems as the scanner wasn't being recognized however restart of the computer fixed the glitch. So far, it's the best printer I've had and continues to function like a larger office printer. ... show more

  • Prints good. Pop up touch screen door is terrible
Style: Printer Color: Black
Not sure why they always ask buyer to review a produce when it is only weeks old but here goes. Positive - Prints good. Negative - paper tray does not hold enough. Not sure of the number of sheets but do know you have to fill it way to often (and I don't print that much). Someone should lose their job over the door that holds the touch screen. It has no locking mechanism so if you push on the touch screen to hard it will go down unless you use your other hand to hold it up. (hello is a touch screen that requires downward pressure to use). Then if the door is just slightly down the printer will not print and gives a message that says its not in place. I don't get it cause this is an obvious flaw that the factory should have addressed. All that being said I do like it. It prints good and in the end that's what I needed. FYI, I hope they ask me what I think of it in 3 or 4 months cause I'll know a lot more then ... show more

  • Loading Drivers
Style: Printer Color: Black
Ok, if you follow the installation instructions verbatim like I tried, you will get to a point where the printer is setup and the on screen menu is in a normal ready to use screen. The Manual then tells you to go to a web address for Cannon to install the drivers. The driver for this machine is not listed here, nor will the search find it. You are stuck. Instead, open your browser and do a search for Canon USA Downloads. Click on the official link from Canon. NOW enter the printer name which is TR8620. It will show 2 potential drivers. I used the the most recent date version. Click DOWNLOAD. Now your download file will have the file which is an executable. Run it. You will answer some basic prompts, then it it looks for the device on your network. Here is where the fun begins! If you followed the directions to the letter, the installer will not find your printer, and refuses to go any further. Its a little like my wife. What did you miss? NOTHING. Canon dropped the ball here. Let's fix it. Leave you PC alone for the moment. I have my Canon printer hooked up to a network using a cable as I have older non wifi computers using it. I plugged the cable in and thought I was done. Nope. Take a look at that fancy LCD screen on the printer. Notice how the WIFI and Network Icons are showing offline? Click on the little gear/wheel symbol on your printer LCD. Now the menu will bring yout o Device settings. Select enable LAN if you are using a network cable like I am. BOOM! Your Lan is now connected, and your PC install will now find and show the magical new printer on your network. CLICK ON THE PRINTER NOW. At the bottom of the install box you can follow the process and you are done. Repeat the software install for any other computers on your network. Done. Now the printer itself- Pros *Nice small footprint. *LCD screen is cute and big and very touch sensitive- nice! *As others have noted, the screen must be flipped up and paper output tray must be extended to print- not a deal breaker for me. Your mileage may vary on this issue. Install for the 5 ink cartridge's is simple and on screen beeps and pictures l;et you know you put them in correctly- nice! Cons *Power cable is shorter than a politicians memory. * No network cable in box. Bring your own beer here. *Printer driver install and network instructions are non existent. This is really inexcusable for a home product with all us non techies out there. zero stars for Canon on this issue and your ratings are getting hammered for it. I will complete my review and update later. I wanted to get this out to the new owners who are frustrated with their install :) Overall I think it has proper value for price point and use case. Very quick for what it is. So far I'm happy after the software install episode fades from my mind... I would purchase again and gave it 5 stars. *While the price point for this model is lowish, I do find the face panel that the LCD is part of extremely bad looking- you can see parting lines and mold finishing haze in it - very very low quality- but functional enough. Its kind of a 15 yard beauty if you will. UPDATE 3/9/2021 The photo printing quality is fantastic IMHO. The single sheet feeder in the rear takes you paper after you follow the on screen instructions of flipping a paper guide, loading paper, flipping it back. Not designed for running multiple copies quickly- but perfect for home users. The speed is amazing and was dry. The copier is a simple affair. Open the cover, place document on platen and hit scan. LCD will ask you where to send it. It will go to several cloud choices or a PC folder as a PDF. Very quick and easy. ... show more

  • Finally, a good printer!
Style: Printer Color: Black
I usually do not like to spend the time writing reviews, but I decided to write one for this printer in gratitude after a terrific experience with Canon tech support. I have always used Epson printers in the past because they are generally the least expensive. But they malfunction frequently, and I've gotten used to being without my printer a couple of weeks a year which is a big hassle for me. The best thing about this printer is that it works consistently well. Epson has terrible customer service. I always dreaded calling them because the call would inevitably take an hour and the rep was rarely a native English speaker, which made the call last even longer. I had an error code come up yesterday on this Canon printer, and I thought to myself "here we go..." But you know what? The entire call took only about 10 minutes, the person was a native English speaker who was extremely competent. He identified the problem immediately and walked me through the solution step by step. Wow! Also, the Epson ink cartridges are very expensive and empty quickly. The price of Canon ink is cheaper and it lasts much longer. All in all, it is well worth it to spend the extra money to buy this Canon PIXMA. I am very happy with my purchase. I liked it so much that I bought a second one for my other office. I highly recommend this product. ... show more

  • Time to try BROTHER printer!
Style: Printer Color: Black
PRO: a. Good quality both print and text b. Compact size c. Easy installation d. Two paper sources CON: a. Very noisy w/lengthy cycling b. Small capacity paper tray (100 sheets) c. Automatic shut off each day-prefer to be on at all times. d. Must program paper sizes, not automatic as was my MX922 I’ve been buying Canon for as long as I can remember. Had two MX922 printers for years-finally dies. What I paid $99.99 for is now $399. Couldn’t afford so purchased the TR 8620. When this dies I’ll probably switch to Brother-seems like they offer the most bang for your buck. Sorry Canon! 12/21/20 After trying for hours to do some speciality holiday printing I'm recommending this printer as a boat anchor. There is nothing automatic about this printer. Any change in paper or paper size requires resetting the printer. Always shuts down at night and instructions to change setting different from available controls. One of life's greatest mysteries (relating to technology) is why Canon has so many different inkjet printers. It would be much better for consumers if a company developed 2 or 3 printers in each of three price ranges. I've been using technology since first presented. Present selection of peripherals is overwhelming. `2/2/21. I've been using printers for at least 50 years. Without question, this is by far the worst I've ever used. I've now had this "thing" for three months. The longer I have it, the more I hate it. For one thing, it lacks 21st Century technology. Any time you change paper size you need to go to the printer to make changes. Anything other than regular letter size paper in the front tray requires new settings-never had this before. Sometimes it takes forever for the printer to respond. It makes a lot of noise recycling or whatever it does. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER. The market is flooded with much better printers. I sure wish I would have tried a BROTHER. ... show more

  • Go off brand for the ink - but this printer is great
Style: Printer Color: Black
The Canon TR8620 just… works. Connects easily, stays connected, prints when asked. After years of printers treating “are you online?” as a deeply personal question, this one shuts up and does the job. Print quality is great, scanner and copier work fine, mobile printing is smooth. The ink, though. The ink. Printer ink is the most expensive liquid on earth, somewhere between saffron and unicorn tears. Not Canon’s unique sin — it’s the whole industry — but bring a credit card to the ink aisle. Pros: • Connects and stays connected like a functional adult • Solid print quality • Scanner, copier, even fax all work • Quiet Cons: • Ink prices will haunt you • Takes up some counter space Tips: • Buy ink in multi-packs to keep costs sane • Print something every couple weeks so the ink heads don’t dry out Five stars. Would print again. ... show more

  • An ok printer, but some features are lacking
Style: Printer Color: Black
We decided to switch to another brand of printer after our older printer started rejecting the cartridges that were OEM bought off their website. So, we decided to try a Canon. We have always loved our Canon cameras, so thought we would give this printer a try. I did a lot of research, looked at recommendations, and found that most of the complaints would not apply to us. for instance, some people report issues with using Wifi for printing, but we use a cable, so this did not concern us. I do not need to be able to print from my phone. I have only been suing this printer for about a month, but here are the things that annoy me: 1) My old printer would allow me to resize (trim) something I had scanned, so that for instance, if I scan a grocery store receipt, the finished pdf would just be the width of a receipt. Not so with this printer. It is full page or nothing if you do a pdf. Photos, or really anything stored a a jpeg can be resized, in fact, it seems to do that for you. But, you can only do one picture at a time, and sometimes the grocery store receipts go to two pages in length, and I like them stored in one document. I have tried their community help board, and no one has offered a solution for my problem, so it seems there is none. 2) The paper tray does not have a very large capacity, and it is very awkward to refill. 3) The back feed works if you remember to specify it, but I am having a hard time getting it to work if I put in more than a few pages of paper. The part that must be closed to use it will not hold the paper from flopping over and thus will not close properly. 4) As others have reported, it will not wake up just because you send a print job to it. You must manually wake it up by pressing the power button. This is not a terrible problem for me, since the printer resides very close to my computer, but I can understand why that annoys some people. ... show more
