🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The Canon Printer is overall appreciated for its excellent print quality, effortless compatibility with Apple devices through AirPrint, and reliable functionality across wired and wireless connections. However, some customers encountered a complex WiFi setup and faced issues with the longevity of the machine, especially when non-Canon ink cartridges were used. Scanning and faxing features are also solid, but there were some challenges setting up the scanning feature due to lack of clear instructions.

Pros

  • 💼 Excellent print quality, even for highly detailed graphics
  • 💻 Seamless compatibility with different devices, including computers and smartphones
  • 📱 Supports Apple's AirPrint for quick and easy printing
  • 🖨 Avaliability of features like two-sided printing and high-quality scanning

Cons

  • 🔧 WiFi setup may be overly complex for some users
  • 🕰 Slight delay in printing the first sheet
  • ⏳ Some users reported decreased printer longevity, especially when using non-Canon ink
  • 📑 Scanning function requires technical knowledge to set up

Should I Buy It?

If you're looking for a high-quality printer that excels in detail and color quality, willing to spend time on initial WiFi setup, and are planning to stick with Canon-branded ink cartridges, this printer stands out as an excellent choice. However, if scanning is a big part of your workflow, be ready for some additional setup work or consider seeking customer support for assistance.

  • Excellent Canon Printer!
So far, so good with this printer. Even though its WiFi setup seemed a bit overly complex, once I got it going it's been working perfectly since. Canon's instructions for physically setting up the printer were just about perfect. However, they seemed to wanted to jump through hoops to get WiFi connectivity working. Perhaps they were trying to make it easy for a networking neophyte, but after three attempts trying to connect it their way, I gave up and just dug into the menu, looked for networking, selected my network, entered its password, and I was good to go. If it wasn't for the bungled attempt at making it easier to setup WiFi, I'd give the printer 5 stars. Once the printer was connected to the network, finding it on any of the Macs, iPhones or iPads in the house was quick and easy. This printer supports Apple's AirPrint and it works perfectly. The printer itself works great. Quality of the printout, both black and white and color, is outstanding for a printer in this price range. I've printed out some graphics for some technical memos I needed to write and using the "best" quality printout, the graphics looked spectacular. For regular text, the print speed is fast once the printer wakes up. The first sheet can take awhile. As long as the printer stays awake further print jobs are fast. Two-sided printing also works quite well. I've also used the scanner a lot on my Mac with VueScan (the best scanning software out there, bar none!) and it too works perfectly. VueScan saw the scanner immediately and set itself up to work with it. All told, if you are looking for a 3-in-one system and you don't want to spend a lot of money, you can't go wrong with this model, or one of the similar models in the Maxify line. ... show more

  • Home Office Champ
This is my third Canon Printer, I am guessing it's about three years old. It replaced an earlier Cannon MB2500 (as I recall, may not be the correct designation) all in one printer. This printer has so far been flawless. I get through a complete set of "XL" cartridges in about 12 weeks. I user premium 28 gram weight paper. Based on this profile the print quality is superb. Color is very good. Its not the "best" for photographic the color rendition is a little skewed and muddy compared to high quality photographic printers. I do very few, and simply send those that I do out to Walgreens. Admittedly I have not tried running through dedicated photographic paper, so that may be worth a shot. The scanner is okay, it has developed in the last 6 months a very fine black line on some scans. It is not an issue for what I use it for. I believe the printer will perform acceptably with lower grade paper. I have run through a couple in the past. But it does need to be inkjet paper. Now a note in inks. My previous Canon printer I switched later in its life to generic brand inks. The quality was pretty variable, but the cost savings were huge. I was happy to save the money. That was until the last bull purchase (a deal with four sets of cartridges.) One month into those cartridges I started getting problems... they quickly degenerated as well. The print quality went off the cliff, I started even getting occasional bobs. No amount of deep cleaning helped. In fact it made it worse. I did manage to extract the cartridges and replace with a set of canon cartridges. However, the damage was done. I tried cleaning the heads. No improvement. It clearly damaged the nozzles at a very fundamental level. I gave up and donated the printer to Goodwill. I have seen a number of complaints in the reviews on print quality, clogged heads etc. In my experience if you try to save a buck it will be at the expense of longevity of the printer. It may even be worse for a home user where the print volume is perhaps much lower than a commercial office. On cartridge page volume I have ,measured this relative to paper ream usage. In my experience with normal letter type publication, web printing and so forth the cartridge life seems to vary between 1,100 and 1,500 pages. The variance is also in part due to the duplex printing mode. That said a solid page of one color will totally throw off those numbers. I know because it has on occasion happened. Remember you can go into the print que and abort! Alsoa. solid page of black looks pretty uneven in color depth presentation. Laser printers are way superior in this regard. Finally connectivity. The is an easy printer to set up in my opinion. The Canon drivers are solid and support the product well. I use this printer with Chrome books, Windows 10 Laptops, iPads and Macs. One of the Macs is at OS 11 (Big Sur). The last point here, there are new drivers available on Canon's website that support Mac OS 11 even though that is not called out in the Amazon listing. It is possible they may not come with your printer, and you may ave to search them out. I don't know as I bought my printer several years ago. I've used this printer with USB in the past. I used it with Ethernet, and currently with Wi-fi. Works well with all three. In conclusion, good medium-low volume all-in one printer. Features good connectivity, reasonable paper tray capacity (might be a little small for a commercial office), it is in my experience reliable. Scanners are however prone to failed bits (black lines). My current and previous Canon all-in-one's experienced that degradation. Printer life, of my last printer was severely shortened using non-Canon ink cartridges. As with all printer manufacturer cartridges they are too highly priced, although these do have reasonable page life. You can recycle these with Office Max/Staples. Recommended for Home Offices Everywhere! Commercial high volume use might be pushing this investment - check the manufacturer's specified duty cycle. Alternatives would be all-in-one laser printer solutions, but the starting price is typically considerably higher. Also those units typically come with low volume starter cartridges which cost a lost to replace. ... show more

  • Lots of Good Features but not for the long haul
My second Canon Maxfy failed 3 months after the expiration of the 4-year extended warranty. The first one crashed during the warranty and was replaced with the now dead one. When it works, it's great. We had this running on a LAN. It would print from my iPhone or any of our household Macs. Pretty hard on the color ink cartridges. Does a really great job printing Hi-Rez on photo paper. Also, the scanning and FAX features are excellent. I've decided I'm probably looking at HP this time around, although the Epson ink bottles sounds attractive. All of these color printer scam you on the first allocation of color ink. Clearly they're making more money selling us ink than printers. ... show more

Nice printer so far. Hooked up to wireless network in minutes and came with very informative instructions. First couple prints came out perfect and fast. We will be printing mainly from our devices using AirPrint. No problem communicating. My only issue was setting up the scan feature. Canon does not include instructions on this setup, which is problematic. You’re going to need to be computer savvy to do this. It requires logging into the printers IP address and changing the device settings. You’re going to need to understand SMTP servers and their corresponding ports. Once you have that information or you are well-versed in that language, it works brilliantly and the PDF is clear when it shows up in the email. Although I was able to figure this out on my own, I did try to call customer support for assistance. They do not have customer support for this printer. It’s only online and there is no information on the scanner set up. Another thing to note, the printer defaults to power save mode which means you can’t print when the printer is off. A nice feature is the scheduling feature for this function. You just have to scroll through device settings and set up your schedule so your printer will automatically turn on during working hours and off while you’re sleeping. This will save energy and may extend the life of your printer. ... show more
