  • WARNING: Does not come with ETHERNET or USB connection cables!
Just finished installing this printer. My PC is connected via ethernet cable to a wireless router, so it was necessary to connect the printer to the wireless router via ethernet also. Unfortunately, this printer does not come with an ethernet cable. It ALSO doesn't come with a USB A to USB B cable for a direct connection. What kind of sense does it make for a non-wifi printer to come with NONE of the connection cables necessary for connection? Luckily, I had a spare ethernet cable lying around, but if you are buying this, make sure you also order the required cables you need because Canon didn't bother. Seems stupid to me, but whatever. Maybe I missed some other means of connection, but for certain this printer doesn't come with either of those two cables. It comes with a telephone cable. This is not an ethernet cable and it will not connect your printer to your PC or to your router. Just a heads up if you aren't a network admin and didn't pick up on that right away. So far I have printed a test page. It works. Set up was straightforward outside of the cable issue; the downloaded driver software detected the printer immediately and it was set up in under a minute. It took longer to peel the stickers off everything than it did to install the drivers, so that part was nice. The actual design of this printer is very smart; nothing pokes out too far or requires a lot of clearance which is great because I put it under my desk. Haven't tested scanning functions yet but I'll be doing that soon and will update with any issues. 3 Stars for not putting the connection cables in the box, or at least giving customers a heads up. UPDATE: Scanning through both the feeder and using the glass works perfectly once you download the MF Scan Utility. In fact, everything on this printer is working so easily and flawlessly that I have no choice but to increase my review to 4 stars. If I didn't have my own ethernet cable to spare I'd probably leave it at 3 stars, because it's honestly ridiculous not to include Ethernet or USB connectors, but this is a solid product at a good price. I recommend it anyway. ... show more

  • Software is terrible, renders it useless if you scan a lot.
I bought this to replace a Canon mf216n that had expired from use. The 216 was great and the 236 appeared to be more or less the same. The 'new and improved' software has a major flaw that renders it useless for someone who scans a lot of documents: You can't specify the file name at the time of scanning. All you can do is set the prefix, like IMG_ or SCAN_ and then the software appends the date to the prefix and that's the file name. Scan 10 or 20 documents in a sitting? Better remember what order you did it, or have fun opening each to see what it is, then change the name. Either way, you're handling it 2x. Seems trivial, until you have to live with it. Canon, how could you screw up such a basic part of the user interface? I'd be happy if I could go back to the old MF Toolbox software, but no such luck. The 'improved user experience' is mandatory. Decent laser printer, but totally unsuitable as a small business office tool. ... show more

  • What a FOOL I was to buy this complicated piece of machinery.
I wrestled with this thing for several hours and I've had enough. Perhaps all printers are this complicated to set up and operate. I remember the old days when you could plug in a printer and were pretty much good to go. Those days, it seems, are gone and have been replaced by what feels like a room of fun house mirrors. Right off the bat, after installing the toner/ink crap provided by Canon, I was given error codes that the toner I used may not be legit Canon toner and because of this the machine would not be able to gauge the level of toner left for use (lucky for me, this would never be a problem I'd have to face since I never did successfully anything). And the first time I tried printing something (stupid of me to try since my laptop and the printer never were successfully wedded to each other), I had a paper jam which I was unable to figure out how to solve. I called Canon. Their customer service announcement states I have to register with them on-line first before speaking with anyone (I don't even know how to do that -- perhaps they have another phone number to users stuck back in the Stone Age). Stupidly staying on the phone, an automated voice says that because of "high call volume blah blah blah" my wait time will be "more than 30 minutes." No clue to how much more than 30 minutes -- 1 hours? 5 hours? It seems Canon's too cheap to opt for that option some good companies employ to call you back in the order the call was received, so as to not waste folks' time. Their current system must be working for them, with befuddled users like me hanging up in frustration rather than endlessly listen to their musack in frustration. I successfully download the CD-rom (which appears to only work with FIREFOX, a server I don't care for). The User Guide is only on-line, no hard copy of it, which I find difficult to use. There are so many disclaimers, so many fine print caveats, I'm not sure which applies to me, etc. I'll end here, as I've already handed over to Canon enough of my life during the past two days. ... show more
