  • Excellet Standard Zoom Lens, and White Box is the Way to Go.
This will be a two-part review. First, I'd like to address what seems to be a misunderstanding amongst a number of people about what you are actually getting by buying a "white box" lens. What you are getting, if it is "fulfilled by Amazon", is a brand-new, USA model lens. It is identical to the lens you'd receive buying the version that is about $400 more. Retailers get a substantial discount from Canon if they buy the lens as part of a kit with a camera. In the case of the 24-105mm L, it comes with the 6d and 5d Mark III. The retailers often break up the kit, selling the camera and lens separately. They can then discount the lens and still make a profit. Canon does not have any problem with this, and it's done by authorized and non-authorized dealers. Of course, Canon only sent them one box, and that was used for the camera, so the retailer puts the lens in a white box to sell. Most of the time they put the warranty card and any paperwork pertaining only to the lens in the box, but sometimes they don't. It doesn't matter. The warranty card is not necessary to obtain warranty service, and the other paperwork is easily found online. So, the big question is, does this lens come with a Canon USA warranty? If you call Canon customer service and ask them directly (which I did), they'll tell you that it's only covered if you buy from a Canon-authorized retailer. The retailers listed currently on Amazon's site for this lens are not authorized retailers, so technically there is no Canon warranty on the lens. However, from forums on the internet and other sources, I've been told that Canon will honor the warranty if you have a receipt showing you purchased the lens new (which you would have in this case), and that they don't check to see if the retailer was authorized or not. They only check to see if the serial number (engraved on the base of the lens, near the gold connectors) indicates that it is a product designated for sale in the US, and not a "gray market" lens which was illegally imported from overseas. Hopefully I won't have to find out, but I'm fairly certain that, if my lens malfunctions during the warranty period, Canon will fix it for free. The fact that I registered it with Canon as part of my CPS (Canon Professional Services) membership gives me some reassurance on this. Now, for the lens itself. I have been using a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens as my walk around lens for my 5d Mark II for 4 years now. I've' been very happy with it's performance, but recently I started shooting more weddings, and the Tammie has struggled to focus in the dim light in some churches (where flash isn't allowed). I reluctantly decided to replace it with a Canon 24-105mm to gain better auto-focus and Image Stabilization. Since I had both lenses, I decided to test them against each other. Optically, there's little difference between these two. Both are sharp, with nice contrast and good control over chromatic aberrations. Both have some distortion on the wide end, the Canon a bit more since it's wider, but it's nothing serious. The Tamron is one stop faster (f/2.8 vs. f/4), but the IS and fast, accurate auto-focus of the Canon more than make up for this. In the end, it comes down to what you value most. If I hadn't started shooting more church weddings, I'd still be using the Tamron, as I had always been very happy with its image quality. But the Canon matches it in most respects, and adds IS and ring-type auto-focus, which will come in handy in low light. The fact that I could buy it for about $700 in a "white box" was the kicker. Oh, and make sure you buy from a retailer that uses Amazon to fulfill the order. Amazon considers "fulfilled by Amazon" to be nearly the same as "sold by Amazon", and will allow you to send back a defective product for replacement or refund within 30 days. You'll be dealing with Amazon, not the 3rd party retailer, so buy with confidence. ... show more

  • Great lens for taking pictures of kittens! Great lens for taking pictures of kittens!
My new favorite lens. I recently got 2 new kittens and purchased this to take pictures of them. It creates the softest background when close up to subject, and stunning photos. It’s not very noisy, I’m able to snap pictures when the boys are sleeping and they don’t notice. It’s not a heavy lens. About 1.5lbs I think. I purchased this used and it’s worked perfectly. It has both auto and manual focus. Auto is great for when my boys are playing. Haven’t taken it off my camera body since I got it. ... show more

  • Great lens with excellent Price
I was skeptical to order the lens (white box) reading review here gave me courage to order the lens from Get it Digital, it was delivered within 3 days of order (fantastic), I own 70-200 F4 IS L but want this lens as overall go to lens, this will cover my needs for now at least, this will be used with my 6D camera, F4 on 6d is very decent as compared to Crop sensor, I am still evaluating the lens and will do a post detail review later, i will register my lens to Canon probably in next few days. I am very impressed with the quality of photos from this lens as expected from L Lens, i would recommend people to save money and order white box. This lens i brand new includes Lens hood, Cover and Bag, you will save $450. 10/18/14: This lens was used extensively during summer, i have taken almost 1800 pictures in last three months, only hand full of pictures will be discarded, i am loving the wide angle aspect of this lens, even in low light i barely need flash with Canon 6d and pictures are remarkable. for most beginners this lens be good enough for daily use photography. in last few months for out doors i never have to use my 70-200 lens as the wide angle was not effective as 24-105. picture is touch better on 70-200 lens. ... show more

  • Wanting refunded ASAP
It looks as if it’s in great condition but isn’t connect with my camera well at all. Freezing and being very slow. I’m a wedding photographer so I can’t have this happening so I’m trying to get a hold of the seller which has been very conflicting as that I have not heard anything from them. I’m just trying to get a refund so I can buy a different lens. I’ve only had this seven months and this issue is very concerning to me. Trying to get this all taken care of because I am slammed with weddings all year long and the sooner I can get this taken care of and get a better lens on my camera the better. ... show more

  • Solid used lens, no fungus, works great with Canon 5D Mark IV Solid used lens, no fungus, works great with Canon 5D Mark IV
The lens arrived earlier than expected and was very well packed (almost too well—I struggled to open it, but at least it was safe). Since it’s a used lens, I did notice some scratches and dust. Thankfully, the scratches were only on the exterior and not on the glass, so the image quality is not affected. One big plus for me is that there was no fungus at all—something I’ve seen others complain about with used lenses. That was a relief, and the lens looks clean inside. It mounted perfectly on my Canon 5D Mark IV, no compatibility issues, and the image stabilization works well. The photos I’ve taken so far are sharp and clear. The build quality of the lens is excellent, and it feels durable in hand. It is a little on the heavier side, but not uncomfortably so. In fact, the weight actually helps with stability when shooting handheld—especially if you use both hands, which makes it easier to keep your shots steady. I’m giving it 4 out of 5 stars only because of the visible wear and dust, but functionally it works great. Overall, this is a reliable walkaround zoom lens if you’re buying used and want good quality without breaking the bank. ... show more

  • omg omg omg!
I just received this lens and my first impression when I picked it up was: omg... this is heavy! (and that means: there's a lot of glass inside it!) :) This is my first L lens, so I didn't know what to expect from it. My comparison comes basically from a kit lens (canon 18-55mm) and a 100-300mm that is a bit old (and slow) right now. I bought this lens with the idea of using it as the main lens for "every" situation (replacing the kit lens) The build quality really is quite good, and the filling of holding and using it is awesome (although if you have a camera body from the first DSLRs, it'll look like the mount is going to break because of the weight of the lens). You really have to hold the body AND the lens. The quality of the pictures are superb, and the AF is really fast compared to the standard canon lenses. The range (24-105mm) is useful for plenty of situations. It can replace most of the "kit" lenses out there (with 18-55mm) for close range and it's average for long range (it would be great if the max range was 150mm). So, if you're thinking on make an upgrade from a standard kit lens... I really recommend this lens for day-to-day general use! It's worth every penny. ... show more

  • Outstanding Lens!
I just received my lens and I must say that I am quite happy with it. This is a great lens, as it should be, it is after all a Canon L series lens; which means top notch optics, second to none build quality and outstanding results. But I'm sure you have already done your research and know the specs of this lens and have seen its results. I bet the reason that you are looking at THIS lens is probably because you want to save nearly $400 over purchasing the retail box copy. Saving that much money, I am sure throws up red flags and makes you question this sale. I cannot speak for what other customers have received in their box, but here is what I got. - Plain white box (obviously pulled from a 6D or 5D mkIII kit) - Genuine Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Zoom Lens (with serial number engraved in the metal mount) - Canon Lens Pouch (LP1219) - Both front and back lens caps (The front lens cap is the newer center-pinch style cap) - Canon Lens Hood (EW-83H) - Canon USA/Canada Warranty registration card I registered the lens online with Canon, without any issues. (Plus I got 8 more CPS points) I probably, like most of you, was very wary about making this purchase. After the lens had arrived and I had seen that everything was included (even the 1 year Canon warranty) I was a very happy camper. I fully recommend that you save yourself the nearly $400 and get this lens. Comment if you have any questions. ... show more
