  • Nice grill!
Style: Cooking Stove
I needed a new camping grill. This is perfect if you're looking for something with a propane alternative. Not light but manageable plus the legs are removable for storing convenience.

  • Bought a used one
Style: Cooking Stove
I bought a used one from Amazon because I didn't want to pay too much to upgrade my camping stove. Glad I did. There was one described as cosmetic blemishes on the outside and this one just said used original packaging. Only thing wrong with it was the gas manifold bar was loose because the knobs that go into the burners were not screwed in enough. Two bolts is all it took to fix that. Manifold is solid now. The day it arrived I assembled and did the smell then soapy water test on all connections as stated in the user manual. No leaks detected and I fired it up. This thing pumps out heat! $83 delivered to my door "used" without a scratch or drop of grease on it. Plan on buying side table and griddle accessories since I got it for a steal. Legs are solid, unit does not wobble at all. Buy this one, you won't regret it ... show more

  • Wonderful Stove!
Style: Cooking Stove
First you need to know that I love this stove, but I have not yet used it. It is built so well and there is nothing flimsy about it. It's very solid and the components are just so good looking. It's heavy and you need not worry about putting heavy pots on it: it'll handle them quite well. And, you can use large pots/pans on both burners. It's really a great stove. ... show more

  • First Impressions
Style: Cooking Stove
I have not used this item yet, just received it. But I wanted to leave my impressions now, and I'll update later if it rates less than 5 stars. 1. This thing is BIG. It's bigger than I thought. It's as wide as a standard house stove/oven. This is not a bad thing, but you should know what you're getting. 2. The burners are MASSIVE. There's a reason it's listed at 30k BTU, because this thing means business. 3. It will operate as a table-top unit, and if I can figure out how to get the pics off my phone (used to, now can't), I'll show you. But you'll need a big table. Think picnic table size. The little camp tables are totally inadequate. And since the legs it comes with are plenty sturdy - there's not much need. Nevertheless - it will sit on a table just fine. 4. I also bought the reversible griddle for it. It's a perfect fit and was designed for this unit. I plan to buy a second one so I can fully utilize both sides or either side when cooking. It's probably overkill - but I like having more than I need rather than not enough. 5. I very much like the modular approach with this unit. And while the separate pieces will add up in price, the base unit alone I considered a bargain compared to smaller table-top units you commonly buy for camping - which are very close to the same price anyway. The quality is clearly there, and the K.I.S.S. principle alive and well in the design. 6. The kind of camping you do has an impact here. I plan to do car/tent camping for the most part, with the idea of extended stays. And I intend to do some real cooking while out there. Camp Chef is an appropriate name for the brand and this unit. 7. I'm a personal fan of designs where form follows function, to the point where it ends up becoming art. That's how I see this piece. 8. When I got this unit, the Amazon box it came in was pristine, but the box for the Camp Chef itself was dented. Furthermore, it was clear that it had been retaped. First thought was I was getting someone else's return, which obviously worried me. But the unit was fine, and I concluded it had been opened to ensure the unit hadn't been damaged - so now I'm happy. 9. I failed to get the carry bag that's available for it. That's a mistake I will rectify next week. It deserves a bag: this is something you'll want to protect for years to come. There's no reason for me to think it won't last decades with just a little care. 10. There is no electric start with this unit. If you've got to have that, this isn't the unit for you. My personal opinion goes back to the K.I.S.S. principle: it's one less thing to eventually break or go wrong, more parts that might need replacing later. I would PREFER a camp lighter. They're cheap and you can have several just in case. 11. My unit came with the propane hose attached, so you only need the propane tank and you're in business. 12. The legs and the windscreen came with a bag to hold them, which was a nice surprise. That will help with them not getting scratched or lost. One last thing: I looked extensively over all the table-top units by various manufacturers, with the intention of buying one of them. None of them felt right: all seemed to have some sort of problem or drawback. Either quality/longevity, or windscreen problems, or connector problems or burner issues or too hot with no adequate low setting. Something. So when I found this, although it's probably more than I need - I knew for certain it wasn't going to be LESS than I needed, and it had the option to grow with my expertise if I wanted it to. So now, having seen it in person - I know it was the right decision for me. ... show more

  • After 6 years of constant use it now needs replacement (update: 8/3/2017)
Style: Cooking Stove
We're now rounding the corner to year 7 and it's ready for replacement. The major flaw with this quite simply is rust... regardless of how well you care for the product (sand+repaint+seal, covering etc) it will degrade over time. This is something Campchef clearly has recognized, as they make a complete stainless steel version of this Explorer being sold at a 2x markup only on their website. Even being a solid hour from the salt water the difference between my Explorer and a family members purchase in West Texas around the same time are glaringly obvious. This thing *will* rust out if you're on a coastline, and I would venture even their premium models of this burner will have the same issue given the material is identical but with more features. TL:DR - If you live on the coast this will rust out, but $100 for nearly 7 years of being outside and under constant use is a solid value. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Let me just say this thing is a power house for searing and heat. I've used the grill now extensively as my primary grill for my home, tailgates, and camping for the last 3 years. Pros: 1) The heat, the cooking time is variable but for 2" cuts of strip and t-bone I get a nice sear to medium-rare in about 2-3 minutes a side with the grill-box. 2) Portability, but not with their tote bag (see 'other'). 3) Utilizes ceramic heating stones and hickory/mesquite wood pellets well (foil smoke bomb). 4) Relatively easy tear down & reassembly, I'd give this an 7.5/10 and I couldn't expect much better from a 14x32 duel burner. 5) Amazing when using the grill and griddle box. It's nice to be able to switch between the small grill, standard burner for pots, and griddle for various meals. Cons: 1) Cleanliness - I wish they would have put some sort of catch for scraping the residue off. It's fine when camping but not really friendly on the back deck. 2) The butterfly screws used to hold the leg poles are made with plastic wings, these will get damaged and dry rot over time especially if you use their version of a grill cover. (see other). 3) Rubber Hose, unfortunately squirrels love to eat these. 4) No heat shield protecting the gas control dials; these get absurdly hot, almost to the point of not being able to be manipulated. Other: 1) If you like to keep things clean for transport, or if you plan on using any type of stones/pellets for heat disbursement/flavor *DO NOT* get their carrying bag. The tote bag they offer makes it so the unit is actually carried on its back-side facing down. I've found better solutions in some quality outdoor canvas duffel bags. 2) Head to your hardware store and replace the butterfly screws for the leg poles to solid metal ones. 3) If you purchase the side tables, do not get their cover... in fact, even if you don't get the side tables- do not get their cover. The one Campchef offers is form fitting and will not cover the tables unless they are removed (this is not easily done). Additionally the cover does no fully cover the unit to ground level and over time you can expect additional rust buildup on all of the components because of it. 4) Again, While you're at the hardware store, replace the 10psi rubber hose with a steel braided one. 5) I've found the grill has uneven heating for slower cooking that is easily solved with the use of ceramic stones to provide indirect heat (avoid the flavored ones); the added perk is they end up saving you a bit on propane use as well. ... show more
