Native to East Asia the Chinese Elm is one of the most popular bonsai trees, especially among beginners. These lovely semi-evergreen trees can grow up to 65 feet tall in their native habitat, but have been cultivated in miniature form for Bonsai for generations. It is an ideal choice for those just starting out because it is slow-growing and tolerant, the Chinese Elm allows beginners plenty of time and forgiveness to grow accustomed to bonsai care making it one of the most loved and most undemanding of miniature trees. These tiny trees feature beautiful, distinctive dark gray to reddish brown bark that turns fissure and corky when mature. My first Bonsai...I have been thinking about getting into Bonsai for a long time but have never had the confidence to try. On a whim, I researched the different sources and found Brussels Bonsai to be a very well regarded for their trees, shrubs and Bonsai. I bought this as it came as a starter kit. The tree was packaged beautifully, and came quickly and in great health. I would suggest to anyone new making this purchase, once you unpackage the tree, follow the directions as far as water and sun. I would then withhold the urge to immediately remove this tree from the planter pot to pot in the bonsai pot. Let your tree acclimate to your area. Brussels Bonsai is out of mississippi so the trees are grown in green houses and their weather is warmer now than mine in the PNW. My tree is doing great. got it April 1 2026 and just now re potted and trimmed roots. So far so good. I liked them so much I went to their website and bought a Fukien Tea Leaf Bonsai. The chinese elm is actually going to do better outdoors for the good weather whereas the Fukien is full time indoors. I will buy from them again. ... show more

The Chinese Elm I received is very beautiful., just like the picture. I know how to handle roots. you have to because the pot with the tree is taller that the ceramic pot, then the roots have to be rearranged without breaking any main root.

Out of the box, the tree was beautiful, and I was very pleased with the purchase. A couple of weeks later, however, the leaves began to yellow and drop, slowly at first but then at an alarming rate. The tree looked sparse for a few weeks, but once the temps warmed enough to put it outside, it came roaring back. It quickly (in days) regained its original leaves and has now started making significant new growth. I would have preferred some lower branching, but I do have a promising new sprout! Obviously there are contributing factors: shipping and repotting stressed the tree. Indoor lighting (and likely higher temps in my home than it saw in the nursery) stressed the tree. I’d suggest taking as much care as possible in reacclimatizing the tree, and being patient with it as it adjusts to its new home. With care, you can end up with a beautiful tree at a very reasonable price. ... show more

Gave this Chinese Elm as a gift to my father, it arrived in great shape and packaging. I only wanted to write a review because I saw it out of the box and kudos to this company for taking the time. Came in healthy and on time but as for a bonsai not so much, hard prune on top with two branches almost in the exact location at the apex and nothing else. I guess after a couple years and maybe a graft or two it may turn into a nice tree.

This tree is a lot smaller than I expected an 8 year old tree to be (I have two 9 year old Chinese Elms that are twice the size) But it is a nice little tree and was really easy to pot it myself. No root trimming was necessary as it fit nicely into the new pot. I only used about 1/4 of the soil that was provided, so I have extra soil for future bonsai. This is my 10th bonsai from Brussels bonsai and will not be the last. ... show more

Extremely healthy, arrived UPS a day earlier than Amazon said (to New England), packaged extremely well. Nice moss around the base..will definitely need to be trimmed but thats what I was hoping for because thats most of the fun! Pre-wired pot looks nice too, but may continue to grow in the stock pot for a while before re-potting, maybe even wait til next spring? Very very pleased. This tree would easily retail at $89.99 at a local shop and probably have ugly wire scars. Again, very satisfied with my purchase and would highly recommend to others! *humidity tray and gravel not included*. . .Heck, may order a juniper later today🤷🏼♂️ ... show more
