Affordable (because of the cost of ink alone) is an understatement. It does what is claims. I use it as a standalone and am able to print, copy, send etc. from anywhere on my in-home network. My kids in school love that they don’t have to use the main computer to print, but can use their laptops and phones to accomplish what they need. It’s quick, simple and makes lovely copies. I bought this printer partly because of the reviews, which cited its ease of installation. That was not true here. It took 1.5 hours and a call to Brother to get it set up. The instructions were sketchy and incomplete at best. The set-up manual indicated that one can get a printed manual by calling the provided number. I tried that but was told there is no printed manual. It took 15 minutes for me to realize that the person on the other end could not even spell my name nor get my email address correct even though I said both slowly and kept repeating. I finally asked for someone else. A supervisor took the call. Thank goodness. She was very knowledgeable. Even at that, it took an hour for us to complete the installation. It seems to be a nice printer, but, if you buy one, do leave plenty of time and have a lot of patience when you install it. ... show more

I bought this printer because a review site said it is very cost-efficient for ink. It is affordable, easy to set up, compact, and does the job it’s supposed to. At one point it wasn’t communicating properly with my computer but the Brother app was able to fix it immediately. Of note, this is not a photo printer, and I don’t know how well it would work for high-volume printing, but it’s perfect for home use if you don’t print often and hate spending a fortune on ink. ... show more

This has been an excellent printer. I got it primarily for wireless printing from my iPhone and iPad. I did use the app to do the setup. The only trouble I had was when you select the printer from your WiFi list you do not need to manually reconnect to your WiFi. Which is probably a no brainer for someone tech literate. The printer has been extremely reliable. It auto connects to my phone shortly after powering on. It always prints nice quality pictures and text. My favorite feature is the scanner. You can actually scan a document and have it emailed to you. I believe you can set this up in the app, but I set it up via the printer screen in about 2 minutes and it works like a charm. Overall this has been a great printer for my home office needs. It’s incredibly reliable, easy to use, and has bonus features I didn’t even know I needed. Printers had me scared and on the fence trying to pick the right one for us. This one has been incredible. It was easy to set up and connect to wifi, the app has been helpful at times. I could never figure out how to register my printer on the website but I'm not worried about it. The color printing has been super nice, black and white as well. The image is crisp and it works with a thicker colored paper as well. I haven't yet in 6 months but I'll soon be running out if ink which refills were decently priced too. Ok....an HONEST review from someone who IS NOT a technological genius. After my 12 year old printer kicked the bucket, I finally bit the bullet and my husband decided that this was the printer that he wanted. He looked at probably 2 dozen before he chose this one. Because I'm writing a story and now printing, we wanted a good quality without going commercial use. Firstly. This printer took WAY longer to ship and get to us than we wanted. Then the UPS driver who brought it up to us (as we were at the door coming home when he arrived) DROPPED it on the porch and left. (Wish id had it on my camera but where I was standing blocked it, totally ticked my husband off). Anyways, there didn't appear to be damage so we figured lets try to set it up because we didn't wanna wait 2 weeks sending it back if it wasn't broken. Set up WAS THE MOST ANNOYING THING IN THE WORLD. Seriously, the way to set up this printer is the most unfriendly, ridiculously complicated process ever! We have to use a USB cable with it because my laptop isn't able to connect wirelessly and even with a USB cable it took us almost an HOUR just to get the dang thing so it was connected and downloaded to the laptop. And the brothers website to download everything was absolutely a pain to navigate! Once we got it done, then you have to go thru this overly complicated and stupid process of aligning the printing paper. Finally, I was able to print. Now this, the printer is AMAZING at. It prints BEAUTIFULLY. I printed off an 1,888 page story (yes, you read that right one thousand, eight hundred and eighty eight pages) and this thing did not jam up once! Now aside from being a pain to connect, you will want LOTS of extra ink, and I highly advice you buy the XL cartridges, especially if you have a lot of printing to do, because I'll tell you I went through 3 ink cartridges in just the first 900 pages. But the quality of the print is beautiful, and looks very nice and professional. I love that it stops when its too low to print out anymore instead of trailing off and blurring out and running out of ink like my old one did, that way its not wasting paper that I have to reprint. ... show more

IT Professional here. What a total piece of garbage. But it's cheap, and it works, sort of. User interface developers should be fired. Immediately. Some options you get stuck in and literally have to power off and back on to get out of. I did manual set up. Trying from a mobile devices forced wps. Had to On/Off, select manual set up and go from there. Still had to go through the menu after "set up" to enable and connect to Wi-Fi via the ssid and password. It wasn't part of their brilliant set up plan to actually connect to anything. My android hates Brother apps. Nothing worked. Used Mopria to [finally] print something. After waking up from my nap (because the printing was so slow) I had my document successfully printed. Quality is passable. Nothing I'd hand to a client or executive or overloard. But it's great for a "Please flush the toilet" sign for the kids. I really wasn't expecting much, cos cheap, but Brother still managed to infuriate me during set up with getting stuck in loops with on/off for remediation, plus endless navigation and button pushing to enter a wifi password beyond all lowercase letters. I need a drink. I honestly had no idea a Brother product could be made this badly. If it makes it a year, I'll be impressed. Did I mention all the interesting noises it makes? Lots of weird noises when its printing. Idk, man. It's just not normal. I'll follow up if I find more annoying things about it. Copy was pretty quick and decent. 3 stars is generous. It prints. It copies. It's cheap. It's supposed to scan stuff but into what I have no idea. Personally, I wouldn't let it send anything to my phone or laptop. I'm going to banish it to the guest wifi. Day 2: Omg, it does get worse. Just login to the web interface and turn off direct IP print, and ipv6, and everything else that's on by default that you don't want or need. Options are not in the UI on the front. I've tried multiple apps, had to manually add the printer via IP address. It works (prints) then doesn't. Available, then not. Wondering now if my phone thinks it's a security threat and keeps terminating the connectivity. Laptop printing seems okay. ... show more
