  • The Most Reliable Printer Ever
Style: New Model: MFCJ995DW
We have 4 of these printers.....the last one purchased 2 years ago and NONE have failed so far. The printer is also unbelievably efficient with the ink and seems to work just as well with genuine or aftermarket ink cartridges. In all my many, many years of buying and using printers (from when DOS was the main computer operating system and cell phones did not exist) I have never come across the likes of these printers. My main reason for writing this review is to say thank you to Brother for a printer well made and a marketing strategy based on quality and value for money. It is so easy to design into a printer an insatiable appetite for ink, then make the ink extremely expensive and aftermarket ink almost impossible to use. But Brother did not do this with this printer. The printer is not the cheapest, but take your pick. Spend more upfront for a solid machine that does not bleed your pocket to death afterwards or buy a "disposable" printer that will demand ink and money ad nauseum before it dies a little after the warranty is up. ... show more

  • Happy With My Choice
Style: New Model: MFCJ995DW
After my old Canon inkjet printer broke (loudly and dramatically in the middle of printing a picture) I needed to replace it quickly. I did not have time for a lot of research. After looking over the offerings from HP, Canon and Epson - all with larger percentages of 1 and 2 star ratings, I decided to widen my search. I have a Brother FAX machine that has worked reliably so I researched their inkjet offerings. The lower star ratings were there - but fewer than other brands and I was intrigued by the huge ink cartridges. My Canon had tiny (and expensive) cartridges - and, to add insult to injury, it INSISTED upon cleaning the print heads any time I turned on the printer (wasting ink and delaying my access to the unit by 30-45 seconds) even if all I was doing was scanning. To be fair, the Brother does that too, but since it has a sleep mode it is not necessary to turn it off - and it does NOT clean the heads when being awakened from sleep mode. Being in a hurry I, picked a printer that seemed to have good specs for a reasonable price. I wanted good photo printing, scanning and copying. The J995DW seemed to be a decent choice. Unpacking was very easy - just a few strips of tape to remove - no packing material hidden inside the unit! I connected the printer to my computer with a USB cable and turned it on. It went through a test and did 7 minutes worth of print head alignment/cleaning (or something) and it was ready to print a test page. First problem! The test page printed 4 blocks of dashes (1 for each ink color) - but there was no yellow! I selected the option to clean the print heads again - still no yellow. One more time and again no yellow. I decided to ignore that and do a color copy. The copy printed and there was yellow on the copy. I went back to the test pages and, with a flashlight and holding the paper at just the right angle I could see what appeared to be very faint yellow dashes where they were supposed to be. Turning my attention to my computer I wanted to install the printer software but to my surprise and pleasure the printer was showing up in my printer list and was fully working and accessible from my computer. Similarly, the scanner was also appearing in the appropriate programs! There was NOTHING I needed to do to “install” the printer. Fastest printer installation ever! I unplugged the USB cable and connected an Ethernet cable to the printer. No problem, the printer was now showing up as a network device (though the USB connection was also there as well and could not be deleted). I could probably reconnect the USB cable, delete tha printer and disconnect the cable - but not worth the effort. My original copy output (where I saw there was yellow) was awful. Reds were a dull orange, greens were also dull and white was a light grey. Since photo printing was important to me, I tried printing a photo via my computer (onto plain paper - not photo paper) and it looked pretty good. I discovered that choosing the right paper selections in the printer options (either on my computer or via the touch screen panel on the printer) made a big difference in output quality. Selecting “inkjet paper” instead of “plain paper” automatically ups the print quality to “best”. It also slows down the print speed. When doing a manual copy, selecting “plain” paper (and Normal quality) gets you a fast scan and print that looked decent. Selecting “inkjet paper” gets you a very slow (but I assume higher resolution) scan and slower printing. The quick setup guide leaves much to be desired. But I eventually figured everything out. The manual is OK (not great) and fortunately I have not needed customer service (so far). After only a few days of use, I am happy with my selection of this product. I considered giving the unit only 4 stars because of the initial frustrations with setup. But decided that was partly my fault so I am giving the full 5 stars. I will revisit this review in a month or two (if needed) to supply more info or report more issues. ... show more

  • Easy to use & maintain
Style: New Model: MFCJ995DW
I'm not a tech person, and this printer was simple to set up. I had a little blip trying to link the Bluetooth/wifi, but other than that, the instructions on screen have worked well for print, scan, cleaning, very rare paper misfeed, and cartridge replacement. When the ink shows lines, it's pretty simple to run the cleaning process. So far so good with my need for a home office. Note: I do not print photos, so I can't say how good that quality is. My only gripe is the usual for home printers: the crazy robbery price of the ink cartridges. ... show more

  • Excellent Printer
Style: New Model: MFCJ995DW
Pros: Cheap to operate for an inkjet. I have printed 175 pages so far and only used about 10% of the ink. I like the tank method over the bottle method. Fast, Quiet, and very smooth operation. Many different ways to hook it up: WPS, WPS with PIN, SSID/Password (the method I used), Ethernet, or USB (yes it can be a share printer too, if you do not want it on your network). Brother iPrint and iScan; either on your computer and/or your iPhone. Wonderful, if you get documents that need to be printed now, and your computers are off, just tap on your iPhone anywhere in the house and you have them instantly – Love It! Of course, If on a computer, you can print directly from your programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) Poster Print, yes it is cool to get giant documents printed out from Word or Excel; but what is really nice is being able to print out giant maps via 4K Jpegs. I can now get giant detailed maps that are razor sharp. This could possibly be better than sliced bread. Print Quality, the sharpness is about 97% of a Laser Printer. Color printing, either plain paper or photo is excellent. Black ink on documents is excellent, deep rich and dark; just a tad better than the laser. By-Pass Feed print for envelopes or photo paper works great, of course you can use the tray for that too. Scanning works very good, and if you need to adjust the quality of the scans you can do that too. This is not my primary scanner, I use a Fujitsu ScanSnap for that. The Brother Scanner can address scanning books, etc. that a ScanSnap cannot do. Cons or Caveats: Windows 10 Install: Turning off (temporally) the Windows 10 Firewall (Private Network) is a requirement if you are installing from the CD. Otherwise it may fail to install OR may not install correctly. If you install over the internet you may also have to turn off your Internet Gateway Firewall to the Net, if installing directly from Brother? Brother telephone support or email support is useless. If you are having problems form day one, then call Amazon directly and “they can” get you connected with Brother support that may resolve your problem. The Brother “ControlCenter4” is for the most part a completely useless program and is seriously out of date. For example: If you attempt to print photos there is a very limited “trimming” capability. It is virtually impossible to complete genuine cropping and/or aspect ratio framing. The standard and free Windows 10 Photo program addresses that problem very easily. Then use the Brother iPrint to print out your photos (at photo quality setting) and it works perfectly. If you have attempted several “installs” and it did not work correctly because you failed to “turn off” the firewall(s), then the Brother uninstall utility that came on the CD may not do its job. You will also have to use Windows Control Panel to uninstall the remaining applicable software assigned to this printer. Next, you will then have to go to Control Panel (again) for your “Printer Listings” and “Remove Device(s)” for all items associated to this printer. You do not have to remove the printer from your Network (it can still be listed as a Network device-with your WiFi is still connected to it). Many Spectrum WiFi Routers do not support WPS or WPS with PIN correctly, that is why I used SSID/Password which has worked perfectly from day one as a Networked Printer. You would use the “WiFi Wizard” on the printers touch screen to do this, very simple. The “Wizard” also presented about 20 WiFi’s in my neighborhood, about 8 more than my iPhone! There is also a Uninstall Utility program from Brother via download for this Printer; However, this printer is NOT listed from the drop down list in that program. Maybe someday Brother will update that program for “this” printer? 4.75 stars - It is good printer IMO. How will it be in 10 years? ... show more
