  • Fast, simple AOI with awful noise and flimsy hardware
This all-in-one (AIO) from Brother replaces my trusty old Canon MX892 since it stopped printing no matter what I did. I needed something that scans and prints quickly and easily. No use for fax at all. The Brother MFC-J870DW does both well. GOOD: - very fast printing. Faster than the Canon. - good print quality, on par with the Canon - fast, accurate scans, on par with the Canon - so far no driver conflicts (Win 7 laptop) or issues. - replacing cartridges is fast and easy. There is a dedicated small pull-out tray on the front right. With the Canon you had to open the hood and mess around with the cartridges that way - nice LCD touch screen with intuitive menus - LCD panel can be swiveled upwards so if you put the Brother on a desk and you're standing up, you won't have to crouch down to see what you're doing. - much cheaper ink compared to many competitors in this class. - easy installation and use of Brother drivers and software BAD: - it is LOUD. It's so loud, I'm docking this 1 star. It sounds like a 1990's cheap Lexmark printer, but possibly worse. The Canon was not nearly as loud when printing or scanning. - it's flimsy, so cheaply made, that this deserves another star taken away. Compared to the Canon, this machine feels like something that cost maybe 1/3 as much to manufacture. The lid likes to fall off if you open it to put down paper to copy or scan, there is no way to properly secure it to the rest of the machine (via a closed latch, for example). When the machine prints, the whole thing shakes a bit. I believe that the flimsiness is part of the reason this device is so loud when it prints. The Canon is a beast, much heavier and bigger, with thicker and better quality hardware that apparently contains much of the noise the printing hardware makes. The automatic paper tray feeder on the Brother is thin and cheaply made as well. The front paper cassette (takes regular paper and has a separate tray for photo paper) is just shoved in there without any secure mechanism. On the Canon, you slide it in and it "clicks"and stays in place, even during heavy printing sessions or when moving the device itself. Everything about it with the exception of the surprisingly good LCD touch screen control panel, the whole thing feels very cheaply made. Not appropriate for an office with high profile clients judging some of your professionalism on the qualify of your work gear. I also don't see this hold up to regular abuse by multiple co-workers. This really is just fine for occasional use by one person at home/home office. OTHER/SUMMARY: Cold boot to print time (time it takes to send the print signal, machine to wake up, and start printing) is about on par with the Canon, possibly a tad faster. When you turn this machine on for the very first time, it'll go through what appears to be an excessive amount of time "cleaning" (Cleaning what? It's brand new....). That is where the noise starts. You hope it'll get better but it doesn't. This is about the noise level and sound frequency you can expect every time you print with this thing going forward. If this is in your home office, expect to wake family members 2 rooms over. I made the mistake to set it up at 2 AM at my home office and that's exactly what happened. For 10 minutes or so, the Brother would be "cleaning", making noise the entire time. After this was done, I was able to connect it to the Wifi, which was a very fast and painless process. Download the newest drivers for your machine directly from Brother.com, don't bother with the included CD. Setup and installation is very easy. Brother has a bundle that contains all drivers and software you need, or you can pick and choose what you want to download and install. The full package is about 143MB Like all printer manufacturers, the software will put a bunch of icons and shortcuts on your computer and in the tray that you may never use. And, also like most other manufacturers, expect the software and driver to eat up some of your computer resources constantly, whether you're actually doing anything with the device or not. Brother's drivers and software appears to be in line with Canon's printer drivers and utilities in terms of using up background processes. You can also set most of the software like the Control Center, Help, and Status Monitor to not automatically start after you start up your Windows machine. Printing, scanning, hooking it up to Wifi, and general basic use are all pretty straightforward with the Brother. I haven't tested all features yet but for what I know I need to do regularly (simple prints, simple scans), this machine will do OK. The excellent printing speed, general ease of use, and low cost of ink make this a very good device for the price. The unacceptable noise when printing and generally flimsy hardware knocks an otherwise excellent rating down 2 notches. ... show more

  • I am switching to Brother printers
My first printer for my Mac was my old HP which served me for years. It sort-of worked. HP told me they no longer support the Mac drivers. I told them I was switching to Epson. The Epson printer gave me nothing but problems. I was always un-installing, then re-installing the USB drivers. I switched back to HP. My last HP printer used a black cartridge and tri-color cartridge with built-in print heads, the 74X and 75X. It had a few quirks but was usable for a good service life. Now I searched for a replacement. HP no longer uses the 74X/75X and have switched to individual color cartridges. Ok, sounds good - just replace the color which runs dry to save money. But, reviews have been dismal about ink usage and unforgiving firmware which forces the user to purchase unnecessary new ink cartridges. I have been looking for months at the new HP's, Canon, and Epson for a network printer which can FAX aka "all-in-one." I came up empty. None of these major brands produce a printer with good reviews. I'm reading about poor customer service, DOA printers, horrible ink usage, and cranky firmware. I never thought that Brother would have what I needed. I use and abuse their label maker (tip: it's much easier printing address labels than trying to feed envelopes through a printer!) This printer is amazing. Within half an hour, I had it faxing, scanning, copying, and printing. It has all kinds of little features which make life easier, such as the ability to preview a multi-page FAX before dialing and printing a confirmation page for a successful FAX. With my HP, I needed to watch the display for a confirmation. It's far quieter than my HP. It picked up an incoming FAX and I didn't even know. The touchscreen panel swivels (wow factor). The ADF folds out of the way so it's nearly half the height. As someone else mentioned, the connectors for the network, USB, and phone are inside the printer - a little weird, but more of a cord organizer to keep your desk neat. Didn't see it as an issue. Installing on a Mac was very easy... once I found the drivers, which were not on the CD. The installation experience was unpleasant. Mac owners should not worry, but note you must download the CUPS printer driver from the Brother website which is easy to find. Grab the Twain interface, too - it's amazing. I usually skip Twain since it's so much problem on a PC, but on the Mac it seems flawless. Don't bother with the included driver CD. For Mac, it's useless. It kept insisting that I go through a guided wireless installation and did not install any of the drivers I needed. If you're the type of person who likes to spend their weekends fighting with computers, by all means embrace wireless printing. I gave up years ago. I don't install USB printers or wireless printers, never again. I always run an Ethernet cable directly to my router and set a static IP address. Trust me. Macs don't like USB devices which can be turned on and off when they're trying to sleep (may cause a kernel panic). And, if you've got VMware, sharing a network printer between three operating systems is infinitely easier than switching USB devices. Google bonjour for windows and CUPS. yea, it's a painful learning process, but you only have to do it once. Even more unpleasant was finding the CD label program which is supposed to be bundled with the printer. I haven't found it yet. It's not easy to find on Brother's website, but it's mentioned in the manual. Google found it for me. I ran it - wow, really powerful CD/DVD printing program for inkjet printable media. I usually just use a Sharpie marker. If I find anything else worthy of mention, I'll update my review. But, I am almost ready to chuck my HP printer for good and switching to Brother. I just wish they'd make the Mac installation procedure a bit more friendly. ... show more
