  • Relatively Easy Setup
Style: MFC-J805DW Pattern Name: Printer
I've only just set the printer up and tested it so this review is mainly about the setup. None of the computers I installed it on have CD/DVD drives so I had to download the driver from the website address given in the instructions. My satellite internet is relatively slow lately, probably due to increased internet traffic related to Covid-19, and downloading the nearly half gigabyte driver file was the longest part of the installation. I followed the quick guide instructions to set up the printer hardware....loaded paper, plugged in the printer, installed the ink cartridges, and followed the instructions on the printer control panel. My first attempt to download the Windows 10 64 bit driver with Firefox failed with just 5 MB left on the download. I switched to Chrome and the file downloaded without a hitch. The only other setup hitch was on the first installation, my desktop. The setup software didn't find the printer. After making sure the printer wireless was turned on the setup software still could not find the printer. This problem was resolved by using the setup wizard from the printer control panel. It found my wireless network and once I entered the password connected almost immediately. From that point I followed the instructions on the setup software and everything went smoothly. I was asked if I wanted to download the iPrint and iScan software and I chose yes. I declined sending Brother diagnostic information. Finally the setup software looked for and installed the latest driver update. That was followed by a printer update that didn't work because the software indicated the printer was offline. I ignored this and closed the window and test printed a photo and document. I printed the photo on plain paper and it was an excellent reproduction of the image as it looked on my computer screen. It's worth noting that once you finish the setup on the printer itself, before installing the printer driver, the printer automatically prints a test page and instructions for installing the software. The print quality of the instructions is not high and it looks like something from an old dot matrix printer. Don't be alarmed. When I printed a document from the computer the print quality was excellent and just what I expected from a quality inkjet printer. I next installed the driver on two Windows 10 laptops. I copied the file I downloaded to my desktop onto a USB memory stick. I copied the file from the USB stick to the download directory on each laptop and double clicked on the file. The file extracted the setup software and began the setup. The setup went off without a hitch. The computers had no problem recognizing the printer. For these two computers I declined installing the iPrint and iPhoto software. I tested this software on my desktop and while it worked fine I didn't find it to be necessary for my purposes. It would be useful for those who want to print photos and documents without having to use separate image editing or word processor software like Photoshop or Word. As with my desktop, after installing the latest software update the setup software said the printer was offline and didn't install a printer update. I again just closed that window and ran test prints. I didn't time the laptop installations but I'd guess I completed each one in 5 to 10 minutes. ... show more

  • So far so good!
Style: MFC-J805DW Pattern Name: Printer
9/2020 Edited: going strong! We are in a pandemic so I am working from home, printing more often, and this is a GREAT printer, still tons of ink left, high quality printing. I highly recommend: I hated my last two printers but this is a great printer. After a few years of frustration about the tiny amount of ink in each cartridge, combined with the ridiculous costs from Epson (most recently) and HP (before that), I decided to change my printer instead of spending another $70 on ink that wouldn't' last long, with the hope of reducing the need to spend a lot of money on ink that seemed to run out every time I hit "print". I don't print that much - occasional work from home documents, my daughter's homework every now and then, etc. so I didn't need anything fancy. I found reviews of this machine on PCMag.com and what sold me was that the cost per page, and the number of pages listed for a cartridge of ink, made me think I'd be happier with this machine. That fact that it is advertised as including a year's worth of ink makes me think that if that is, indeed, true, then I saved a ton of money over the space of a year by buying ink+machine rather than just replacing my ink cartridges in the Epson (again!). Set up was easy - just hit "next". My computer doesn't have a CD drive but downloading the driver from Brother was no big deal; easy to find and worked just fine. I printed a photo as a test, and the quality is quite good, with no lines on it, and edge to edge coverage on an 8.5x11 piece of paper. I used my phone to print, and it couldn't have been easier. I have a work Windows machine (a nice Dell laptop) and a home Windows machine (a horrible Acer laptop that I regret purchasing) and installation of the software was easy on both. No calls to customer service, and it didn't take long, and I didn't have to trouble-shoot, it just installed exactly the way I expected it to. The real test of whether it holds up to my 5 star review will be how long the initial cartridges last: cost per page/large capacity ink cartridges are the two reasons I chose this machine. I am hopeful that this machine is the bargain that I hoped it would be, and that I'm just as happy a year from now as I am today. So far, so good! ... show more

  • Ink dries up quickly
Style: MFC-J805DW Pattern Name: Printer
When printers sit unused, the ink in the heads dries up a bit. After a period of nonuse, the first page that is printed, the print is fuzzy and incomplete. This is normal. BUT this printer, it happens when there has only been a day or two of nonuse. That is ridiculously fast. Most printers, it takes weeks for this to happen. So if you print every day, this is an awesome printer. It works just like it should. Paper placed in the feeder for multiple page scans, goes in perfectly. The bed scanner is easy to access and works just fine. The print is sharp and no tedious adjustments needed to get it printing evenly. It is lovely, except for the ink drying up. I would highly recommend it for daily users. If you don't use your printer every day, you'd do better going with another model. I hate to say this, because this printer actually WORKS. There is that meme going around, the band Rage Against the Machine is referring to printers, because they are so persnickety and quick to malfunction. Not this one, as long as you use it daily. I find the ink drying up annoying and wasteful, but it does not provoke actual rage. So there's that. ... show more

  • start up easy...until you get to registration and a little problem developed
Style: MFC-J805DW Pattern Name: Printer
i finished the installation part in an hour. then it took me almost half an hour to register the printer, b/c I kept getting messages that my password did not match. and then I had to go back and reset the password. then I had to go back a 3rd time to reset the password and, wow, they let me continue. I did not have too much trouble finding the serial #, and fortunately have a small flashlight and remembered paper and pen. the letters and numbers are way too small, Brother, if you read this. my eyesight is okay (I have to switch glasses which slows things down) but anyone with reduced eyesight: good luck. I have read you can get the serial # online, but no one bothers to say how. the file I printed came out looking terrific. the speed I guess is maybe a bit faster than my last printer (n.b. this is the 4th printer I have had this year. so maybe I am a bit cranky?) have not tried color printing yet. basically I need b&w, and the speed is no big deal. now, on to copying. sheesh. you have to through several ?s about print type, etc. then, like my last printer, the same ?s come up again. so you need to go ahead and press the start key. if you have several items to copy, you better have them ready to go as the system goes back to the first page if you don't. also, I found paper placement to be odd. it cut off the top of each page. fortunately, there was not much to copy at the bottom so I got it all copied, but something on the paper guide seemed screwy. maybe it is just me. I am rather a luddite at times. so four stars now. I will say that the critiques of this printer and other brother printers as being flimsy seem quite unfair. is the paper try a bit flimsy. maybe. but if you treat it as you should, there should be no problem. other than that this seems a well-built machine. I will add more comments if necessary and hope I can add the 4th star. I will say price-wise this was a nice treat. originally in the basket it was 169. but then it came down to 139, and unlike some other brother printers, where delivery time can be several weeks, I got this on prime 2 day delivery. after 3 weeks, I can say I am pretty well satisfied with this printer. it prints very well, b&w, color, fairly quiet. does not seem to use much ink. I have been having some 'paper jam' issues every other time I print. only once was there is a paper jammed. the other two??? I pulled out the paper drawer, lifted the lid. and then went back and printed the rest of the document. not a big deal, but irritating. btw, don't bother trying to turn off the printer. it will turn off when it damn well pleases. and sometimes pop back on when I am not even w/processing. no big deal. after six months I rate this 5 star. this is an exceptional printer. not cranky. it works. occasional jam, usually able to do a few things if there is no paper jam. if not, just shut your puter down and restart. no problem. I suppose my one problem is printing 4x6 pics. sometimes I only get half the pic paper printed. I admit I have not really researched it, so.... again, so far, a truly great find. and, boy, does the ink last!!! ... show more

  • Requires regular maintenance / wifi printing failure
Style: MFC-J805DW Pattern Name: Printer
This printer puts out good documents but after having it for only six weeks it suddenly started printing blank pages after working fine just the day before. I printed from multiple devices and got the same result even after ensuring I had the latest drivers. When that didn't work I ran a print head cleaning job and that got the colors working but not black. After running another strong nozzle cleaning for black the printer finally started working again after a good hour of fooling around. How many times did I have to clean the print head in the Canon printer I had for ten years that this replaced? ZERO. I have no confidence that this Brother will go ten years but that's pretty much how nearly every product is these days. I do not recommend purchasing this product. UPDATE: Just a couple of weeks later and now I'm having trouble with wifi printing. It is set up and connected to the network correctly and was working fine until one day it just stopped printing from any devices we tried. Ultimately, we can now print using a direct wifi connection to the printer but it requires the users to disconnect from the wifi network and connect directly to the printer's wifi network to print then switch back again to keep working on the net. Ridiculous. I've lowed my rating to one star and will certainly never purchase a Brother product again. This printer is terrible. Do not waste your money on it. SECOND UPDATE: Nine months after purchasing this printer it has stopped working completely. It gives a message to clear a paper jam but there is no paper jam at all. After checking over every square inch of it and even putting in a new ink cartridge it simply doesn't work. I will never buy another Brother product. ... show more

  • Where has this printer been all my life?
Style: MFC-J805DW Pattern Name: Printer
I am very pleased with this printer. It was out of my spending comfort zone but I feel it was worth every penny and I'm glad I made the splurge. I seemed to never learn my lesson. Over and over I purchased cheap printers from a big box store thinking it was such a great deal. The money I spent in overpriced ink cartridges that seemed to last only a couple months finally irritated me enough to realized it was a huge scam I had fallen for, for years. Spending the extra $ on a quality printer is such a better investment. This printer was super easy to set up. I'm not very tech savvy and I had no problem whatsoever. The printing & scanning is SUPER fast and the quality is perfect every time. I can't believe that a printer that is so easy to use gives me such great results. You'd think I would have to do a lot more work to get those quality results. The ease of a wireless printer cannot be stressed enough. It makes life easy and I like having the option of printing from my phone as well as my laptop. I have not had the printer long enough to evaluate how well the ink lasts, but I will update my review once I can determine this. ... show more

  • Great prints and easy set up
Style: MFC-J805DW Pattern Name: Printer
This is my initial review after setup and one day of use. I’ll update if anything changes. I took this out of the box and followed the quick startup instructions. After turning on and inserting the ink cartridges, it said it would take about 7 minutes to fill the ink tanks but let me continue the rest of the setup process. All told, it was less than 10 minutes to set up. I expected it to take me through WiFi setup as part of the process but it didn’t so I just hit the down arrow which was labeled WiFi and was able to quickly set that up. After connecting to WiFi, I immediately checked my iPhone and was able to connect and print a test page. Next I moved on to my Mac; I simply clicked the add (+) button and it connected and printed right away. Finally I tried on my windows 10 laptop and had no issues there either once I clicked add printer. My word of advice is to toss the installation CD as soon as you pen the box. It has only been one day but I have printed several pages in B&W and color with no issues. I am not sure the “starter” ink will last a year as it claims but we’ll see. I checked the ink and it said about 2300 B&W and 1200 for each of the colors. Pros: Set up was very easy and after 1 day, no issues with printing or connecting to multiple devices. Cons: None so far but I suspect the ink will not last as long as they claim. ... show more
