I have Broan-NuTone bathroom exhaust fans that lasted over 21 years. So, I decided to stick with that brand. In this case, I upgraded from the old 686 from over 21 years ago (now superseded with the 688ES) to the BEL8. It was a semi retrofit. However, installation was not a big deal because the housing size matched (I replaced everything). One note, the previous duct work was at 3 inches diameter whereas the new duct work came in at 4 inches. Home depot sells adapters. The BEL8- is 30 more CFM than previous models and comes with an LED light. Personally, I would just buy the standard 50 CFM 688 ES for $22 and save yourself the money if it is a small bathroom. The upgrade is not worth it. The BEL8 is quiet and looks really nice. However, I am in it for the Broan reliability. I should have saved the money in hindsight. Two issues: 1) the installation guide is ok, but not detailed enough for regular homeowners in my opinion, so checkout a few installation videos on youtube. 2) I received the wrong screws to attach the grill to the unit. Very frustrating so I am deducting one star. These things are now made in Mexico from parts outsourced to Asia. I actually have an old box from over two decades ago that says "made in USA". We will see how long this fan lasts. BYW- there is also no parts list. ... show more

This fan moves a lot of air for the noise level. The light looks sleek and modern. The large open intake on the side reduces the chance of dust clogging it up over time. We really love how this fan looks and performs. Installation isn’t plug and play obviously but that’s expected of any fan. I just figured I should mention it so people don’t under estimate the amount of labor involved in replacing a bathroom fan. ... show more

I consider myself pretty self reliant and believe that with some common sense and watching some YouTube videos, theres not too much that I cannot successfully tackle myself. That said - 2 major things stand out - if you are installing this in a new build, its pretty easy and straightforward. If youre retrofitting this, it is a bit more tedious and not as straightforward as the instructions indicate and is missing several steps to make the install easier with fewer trips into the attic, then back to the bathroom. Additionally, the claim of 80CFM is misleading at best. This unit does move a significant amount of air before installation, but once you put the draft guard on and install the light fixture, you have choked down the ability to effectively move air. There is slightly less than a 1/4 inch gap between the light and the fan housing severely restricting airflow. I checked to ensure that I had installed the ceiling bracket on the shower correctly and then the light correctly. Both were good, so this is a flaw in the design. Overall, it does pull some air, but not at the advertised rate. This unit barely holds a piece of toilet paper and in some spots does not hold it. If this unit had just a grill cover, im sure it would be great, but in its current design, I suggest look elsewhere if you intend to use this for humidity reduction around a shower. ... show more
