We had an old contractor-grade low-volume vent hood that wasn't cutting it. So when we recently bought a new gas range, we decided to get a new vent hood as well, and bought this Broan model. Once I got it installed (8 hours and two Home Depot trips later) I was quite happy with the performance. The dual fans are powerful but quiet, and come with an timed turn-off option that is handy. And the three-level LED lights are nice and bright. The controls are inutitive and easy to use. However... 1) I found the directions difficult to parse, especially as they are in teensy-weensy print with correspondingly teensy-weensy diagrams. How hard could it be to make the print and diagrams bigger? 2) The cabinet above our range is framed and had a recessed bottom. The previous hood fit within the recessed bottom, so there was no problem. The new hood did not fit within the recessed bottom. The intructions told me to use shims in this situation, but the "shims" would have needed to be 1 3/8" thick (!) which is not a standard lumber dimension, and would have resulted in the hood being too low. I ended up removing the trim piece at the front of the cabinet (no mean feat, as it was secured with inaccessible pocket screws) and replacing it with a not-easy-to-find trim piece (poplar vs original oak, Home Depot trip) that resulted in no recess, and then tried to match the stain of the oak cabinets, with not very great results (see photo). 3) The instructions say to install the hood and then connect the ductwork, but this proved to be impossible. I needed to connect my hood vertically to a 7" duct in the cabinet above the range. But the damper/transition piece that came with the hood was no thicker than the bottom of the cabinet, so there was no way to connect ductwork to it after the hood was installed. Instead, I had to screw-and-tape a 2-foot length of 7" semi-rigid flex duct (Home Depot trip) to the top of the hood (picture the hood with a tall stovepipe hat on top, see photo) and then fish the duct through the 7" hole in the bottom of the cabinet, all the while fishing the power line coming into the back of the hood. I'm sure it made for a comical sight, with me and my son (both of us about 6 feet tall and neither of us thin) crammed into the 30" opening in the cabinets, manipulating the hood, duct, and power line! 4) The two pre-drilled holes for securing the front part of the hood to the bottom of the cabinet would not work, as they lined up right at the front edge of the bottom, where they would have split the wood and not held. We had to drill new holes in the hood (not a lot of access space inside that hood!!) and use these for the front screws. For new construction, or complete kitchen remodels, I'm sure installing this hood would be a piece of cake, but not for our kitchen. Oh, and I had to buy the 7" semi-rigid flex duct ($25), some metal-backed tape ($6), a pair of tin snips to cut the semi rigid duct ($15), some 8" worm-gear clamps ($11) and various odds and ends. Think twice about installing this yourself!

We have had this installed for about 6 month now and it works great. The noise is very low on the first couple settings. When turned up it moves a lot of air, but isn't as quiet as would be expected. The lights are bright and the dimming options are sufficient. My biggest complaint was during installation, two of the bolts are in a very inaccesible place. It required a 12" extension to be able to secure the hood.

I got this range hood to replace a much older one. The old one was full of grease on the inside that could not be cleaned out so we wanted one that we could easily clean. This one allows cleaning access to all of the inside once the filters are pulled out. The vacuum and light have 3 levels of intensity. For the lights this is not a big issue to us. But the fan levels solve a problem we had with the old one-NOISE. This has a very quiet setting that we can use most of the time and more intense levels when needed. My one issue was the installation. One reason we got this was the EZ installation devices that were supposed to make it easy to install. They are supposed to hold the hood in position so the installer has free hands to make the attachments for the vent and then the hood itself. Well the devices were not as easy to use as I hoped they would be. But they did eventually work with some assistance from other support objects I used. This is a great range hood and I recommend it.

I had my old Broan for 26 years! It worked great until it just stopped and I purchased this new Glacier model. It's only 6" deep compared the old one being 9", and you can see the space left between the tiling and the bottom of the hood. I needed a 42" model and everything about this one is new and improved! The 3-level led lighting is incredible and bright, covering the entire stove top: 100% better than the 2 appliance bulbs screwed in behind an opaque plastic shield I used for so many years. It's going to be a pleasure getting used to that! The 3-speed fan works great and the digital screen shows the mode you're using. The best and most outstanding feature with this hood is that the entire bottom of the hood is covered with 2 big grease screens, which I assume will collect all the grease that rises in the steam. My old hood was completely open, with only two small grease screens on each end, covering 2 squirrel-cage type fans. These new fans are on ball-bearings and are smooth and quiet. The only difficulty installing this hood was in the hardware provided. There are mounting brackets which we weren't able to use due to our particular set-up, but another reviewer thankfully provided feedback describing how he used a small jack to lift the unit into position to wire it in and screw it into the cupboard bottom. Thank you very much for that invaluable help! We placed a 1" thick piece of particle board over the stove top, put a small millk-delivery crate on top of that, then the jack and used a smooth wooden board between the jack and the stove hood. The board had to be a little wider than the hood to prevent damaging the hood. The wiring was somewhat of a challenge since the access is directly behind one of the fans. I had to set up a portable table to lay on and use a large pillow to lay on the burner grills to get to the wiring. Broan should have provided a clamp connector to bring the Romex into the unit. All in all, I love this new hood and will purchase some new screens, even though they say the screens can be cleaned and re-used. I think we would all disagree with that, but the new hood is lovely and efficient.
