I just finished installing this kit and have a few pointers for everyone. First things first, allow AT LEAST 2-3 hours for install. And if you're new to these kinds of projects I'd suggest blocking out half a day to do the work. Even with the right tools it takes time and patience to get this kit installed correctly. DO NOT RUSH. Also, once I was done with the installation the bars just didn't look right, and I realized the instructions were WRONG because they have you install the bars backwards. The correct way to install the bars is with the thick end to the FRONT of the vehicle, and the "Brightlines" logo on the driver-side of your car. If you install the bars backwards you will get whistling... once I flipped them to the correct installation the whistling went away. A few more notes: 1) It seems Brightlines recently changed the mounting hardware for this kit. Older reviews and pics show a mounting bolt that you can fit through the roof trim piece just by drilling a small hole. This is no longer possible with the new metal mounting shim and silver sleeve bolt. You will need to remove the roof trim piece on each side, find the mounting posts you want to use, and cut away 1"-2" of the trim piece to expose the Pilot's mounting posts, per the instructions. I used chalk from my kids' yard toys to mark the cuts and a cordless angle grinder and was done with the trim and cutting step in about 15-minutes. 2) Be very careful removing the trim piece, it is thin aluminum and can bend easily. I recommend a trim removal kit. I bought the plastic GLK Auto Trim Removal Tool Set on Amazon to help with the trim piece removal step. Also, I left the front and rear trim cover pieces in place, and just removed the longer section that needs to be cut. 3) When removing the roof trim pieces you may break the plastic mounting clips that hold it in place. DO NOT WORRY if this happens. Leave the clips where they are, and once the roof bars are installed they will hold the trim pieces firmly in place. 4) THE MOUNTING BOLTS ARE ANNOYING: The most infuriating part of the installation is actually getting the bars bolted to the roof. The sleeve bolts have a very tight fitting thread and are VERY difficult to get started on the mounting posts. Also, the posts are not long enough to get the bolt started without pushing down on the bar to make everything "fit together." Hopefully that makes sense. I recommend using a step ladder so you can push down on the bar enough to get the sleeve-bolt started on the mounting post. And even then the bolt wants to twist and slide off the post (which is hidden from view). Just keep at it... and (hopefully) it will eventually start threading. My minor complaints about the incorrect instructions on the bar direction and getting the sleeve-bolts started aside, this is a good kit and the bars look GREAT and seem to be incredibly sturdy. If you're not handy with tools or car stuff, or don't have the proper tools to cut the trim, then I recommend engaging the assistance of a friend or having a shop do the install for you so you don't drive yourself crazy.

As others have said the cross bars are equal to what you would expect from Honda, but half the price. They are well-built and integrate easily into the genuine roof-rails. For this reason they deserve 5 stars. also, I should mention that they arrive a day early, so kudos to the seller. NOTE ON NOISE: I too, like some others, experienced noise when I first installed the cross-bars. After realizing the I had one installed backwards (the front one), I re-installed it (so that the "fat" end was closest to the front of the car, just like the pictures posted in other reviews illustrates). Doing this, along with moving both cross-bars to the very rear, has completely eliminated any noise at any speed. Needless to say, I am please as I agree with the other negative reviews that the noise was more than noticeable and annoying. Glad I was able to fix it. FYI-The noise originates with the front bar (I know because when I opened my sunroof it stopped). I am not sure if it was the direction of the bar that initially caused the noise or not since I went ahead and moved the front bar all the way to rear after re-installing it properly. When I move it forward at some point, I will report if the noise started up (in the comment section). For me, having them both in the back is fine. It still looks good and I can easily move the one back to the front when needed.

I like the fact that you don’t need the side rails on the top of the Vehicle. It fit my 2020 Pilot perfect. Be very careful when tightening the nuts. You can easily strip the bolts and then you will be hosed. Don’t over tighten the bolts either. The trick I used was pressing down on the bars while I tightened the bolts on. Removing the trim strips were a fear of mine as well but if you take your time and maybe check out a few YouTube videos on how to, you should be fine. I broke one of the clamps in the weather strips but it worked fine because the boots of the rack pinch it down also. I think they look great and function well. Definitely not the quality of Yakima or Thule but at the price point, they are great. I am pleased with the purchase. It took me about 90 minutes to find install. The crossbars are 32 inches apart from each other. There is no ability to adjust. But fit my Yakima bullet bin great.

This was somewhat of an "emergency" purchase, as our very expensive Thule mounts seemed to have gone missing just prior to a cross-country road trip. Normally, I'd tend to avoid unknown non-OEM brands, but given our urgency, I really had no choice. As it turns out, these rails performed perfectly and have tuned out to be a regret-free purchase that I'm glad I made! Contrary to some other reviews, I found the length adjustments to be intuitive and not difficult at all. With just minor adjustments, the bars aligned perfectly with the dealer-installed side rails on my wife's 2016 Pilot. At that point, securing them was quick and easy (full disclosure: I did use a ratchet and extension in place of the provided tool), even in the dark, cold and rainy weather. When I first opened the package, my initial thought was that the "silver" color was exceptionally bright and would clash with the silver finish of the car. To my surprise, that was not the case - the difference is actually less noticeable in person than my photos suggest. It's honestly barely noticeable, even when you know you're looking for it. Ultimately, I bought these for a purpose, not for aesthetics; in that sense, they did the job and they did it perfectly. The day after they were installed, we had our 20 cu. ft. carrier attached, loaded to capacity. Our 15-day adventure took us over 7,300 miles through 18 states in just about every weather extreme imaginable. There was not one single issue or concern with these crossbars during the trip, nor have there been since. With the carrier removed, my wife has not noticed any noise or vibration and the bars remain as secure as the day they were installed. I originally intended on removing these when we returned and only using them when we needed the cargo carrier, but my wife actually requested they stay on permanently, as she "likes the look". I feel like I lucked out with this purchase... given more time, I was fully prepared to spend twice the cost (or more) of these on OEM or big-brand crossbars. The quality and performance of the Brightline product have made me glad I didn't make that mistake!

Awesome. That’s all I can say. These roof racks are awesome! My 2016 Pilot EXL didn’t come with roof rails. In pricing them out they were going to be close to $400 for just the roof rails and then another $100 for the crossbars, and those were for after market ones from China. The OEMs were significantly more. I searched quite a bit and then found these Brightlines on Amazon for under $200 and decided to give them a try for my surf trip with my buddies. We were going to have to load the boards on top of the roof and I didn’t want to use the soft straps. I’ve had one mishap with softstraps before where my board flew off the on the freeway and I don’t trust them anymore. Let me cut to the chase, these look amazing. I do like the flush and finished look of the factory bars and rails but they also look incredibly generic. Additionally even the factory bars are connected to plastic rails. The OEM rails are nothing but plastic even if the cross bars are aluminum. I was afraid with a couple longboards on top acting as a foil there might be too much pressure UPWARDS and pulling the boards, along with the rails, straight up and off the roof. You’re not going to run into that problem with these racks. All of the mounting hardware is solid steel. While the caps covering everything is plastic, that’s just cosmetic. The actual harnesses to the roof and the bars themselves are solid steel and aluminum respectively. Attaching the racks is actually the easy part, while the more difficult part is removing the molding without breaking all the pins that attach out to the roof. You’re supposed to cut the molding into three sections but instead I ended up drilling, and then filing the holes, to fit the bolt through. The rack is so much more solid than even the factory equipment and actually looks better to me-more rugged. Love these racks and can’t say enough good things about them.

The racks fit on my 2011 Pilot. They did go on snug, but they do fit. Here are a few tips to make installation a little easier: * There are two clips that hold the rear rail caps onto the rail. CAREFULLY with a flat blade screwdriver, alternate lightly prying at the front and at the notch and the covers will come straight up and off. * There are two different plastic ends for each cross bar. A specific end goes on the driver's side and a specific end goes on the passenger's side. If you mix these up, you will install your cross bars backwards. * The driver's side ends each have two screw holes that are not adjustable. Install these ends onto the cross bar and tighten the Phillips head screws with washers. * The ends that go on the passenger side of the car are somewhat adjustable. Meaning that they have elongated holes for the screws. Install the passenger side ends but leave those screws and washers loose enough to allow slight movement. * If you tighten all the screws before you try to slide the cross bars into the roof rails, it will be almost impossible to get them started and even more difficult to move them along the rails. * While looking at the cross bars, the fat edge of the cross bar should point towards the front of the car. Think of how a wing is on a plane. I posted an image of the correct orientation in the Customer Images section of this site. * After the cross bars are positioned correctly and the thumb screws are tightened, Tighten the screws that secure the passenger side ends to the cross bars. I used a ¼ inch ratchet with a NEW #2 Phillips bit. It takes a little effort, but it will work. *UPDATE* Here it is 2025 and I still have that pilot. The racks are still on it and still functioning as good as the day that I installed them.

I just installed these on a 2009 Honda Pilot. I saw some reviews that mentioned some challenges with the install, but I didn't have too many issues. The instructions are not the greatest - it doesn't clearly state which side is the driver's side vs. passenger side. Also, it states they are "torx screws and bolts" but they are phillips heads, not torx. They took about 20-30 minutes to install. Although I haven't actually attached anything to them yet, so far they appear to be good. I will update my review once I actually use them with my cargo rack. Install Tips: As for installing them, there were a few challenges, but it wasn't bad. Having another person would have been helpful though, like most things. Prying off the Rail Caps: I used two flat head screw drivers to pry off the roof rack rail covers. You kind of have to pry those upwards once you get underneath and the lip of them outside the locking tab. A plastic prying tool would be more ideal if you have them (sold at auto stores for prying interior panels), just to be sure you don't damage the rail camps, as they are plastic as well. Inserting the crossbars: They were VERY snug as others have mentioned. You can adjust the width where the bar attach to the cleats, as one side (passenger side) has sliding adjustment bolts to adjust for width (as I noted above, the bolts I received were phillips, not torx as the instructions mentioned). The only issue is the bolt access is on the bottom, which you could access once you slide them on, but you would need to use a "L"-style driver, hard-to-reach driver, or a ratchet with a short phillips tip since the bolts would be facing the roof and you have about 4" of clearance. I just put mine on the smallest width setting and tightened them prior to installing them into the rail. I also used a rubber mallet and a rag for some extra cushion, to nudge the crossbar down the track. You do have to try to hit it evenly on right and left sides a bit at a time.

For half the price as Honda OEM racks, and with a better look, its a good purchase. There didn't seem to be much choice for my 'naked' roof other than OEM or these BrightLines....read a number of other reviews and figured it was worth the shot. Installation requires a metal hacksaw, not listed in needed equipment, because you've got to make 4 cuts in each of the metal trim pieces that hide the roof bolts. Other than that, installation instructions were accurate and it took about 90 minutes for install...longer than I was anticipating, but not harder, just a lot of little things to do. The provided 'bolt extenders' that screw onto the roof bolts are coated, as a locking mechanism, but it did make screwing them all the way onto the roof bolts a bit challenging....took a lot of torque and I was worried that I'd blow out the roof bolt. In the end, no problems. They're quiet while driving at town and highway speeds and are sturdy. I put a rocket box on the roof easily, and now have ski racks up. Basically doing everything I wanted them to do.
