  • DON'T INSTALL BACKWARDS... Take your time and this will be a good kit for you!
I just finished installing this kit and have a few pointers for everyone. First things first, allow AT LEAST 2-3 hours for install. And if you're new to these kinds of projects I'd suggest blocking out half a day to do the work. Even with the right tools it takes time and patience to get this kit installed correctly. DO NOT RUSH. Also, once I was done with the installation the bars just didn't look right, and I realized the instructions were WRONG because they have you install the bars backwards. The correct way to install the bars is with the thick end to the FRONT of the vehicle, and the "Brightlines" logo on the driver-side of your car. If you install the bars backwards you will get whistling... once I flipped them to the correct installation the whistling went away. A few more notes: 1) It seems Brightlines recently changed the mounting hardware for this kit. Older reviews and pics show a mounting bolt that you can fit through the roof trim piece just by drilling a small hole. This is no longer possible with the new metal mounting shim and silver sleeve bolt. You will need to remove the roof trim piece on each side, find the mounting posts you want to use, and cut away 1"-2" of the trim piece to expose the Pilot's mounting posts, per the instructions. I used chalk from my kids' yard toys to mark the cuts and a cordless angle grinder and was done with the trim and cutting step in about 15-minutes. 2) Be very careful removing the trim piece, it is thin aluminum and can bend easily. I recommend a trim removal kit. I bought the plastic GLK Auto Trim Removal Tool Set on Amazon to help with the trim piece removal step. Also, I left the front and rear trim cover pieces in place, and just removed the longer section that needs to be cut. 3) When removing the roof trim pieces you may break the plastic mounting clips that hold it in place. DO NOT WORRY if this happens. Leave the clips where they are, and once the roof bars are installed they will hold the trim pieces firmly in place. 4) THE MOUNTING BOLTS ARE ANNOYING: The most infuriating part of the installation is actually getting the bars bolted to the roof. The sleeve bolts have a very tight fitting thread and are VERY difficult to get started on the mounting posts. Also, the posts are not long enough to get the bolt started without pushing down on the bar to make everything "fit together." Hopefully that makes sense. I recommend using a step ladder so you can push down on the bar enough to get the sleeve-bolt started on the mounting post. And even then the bolt wants to twist and slide off the post (which is hidden from view). Just keep at it... and (hopefully) it will eventually start threading. My minor complaints about the incorrect instructions on the bar direction and getting the sleeve-bolts started aside, this is a good kit and the bars look GREAT and seem to be incredibly sturdy. If you're not handy with tools or car stuff, or don't have the proper tools to cut the trim, then I recommend engaging the assistance of a friend or having a shop do the install for you so you don't drive yourself crazy. ... show more

  • Looks Great! Just some tricks for installing
Nice looking on my 2019 Honda Pilot. Easy to install for the most part, but there were a couple tricks that found helped a lot. - Drill holes in the track, it looks much cleaner - thread the factory nuts onto the studs all the way before putting the support on, as it will help it thread on easier. The studs are kinda short, so I had to push down on the support to get it to thread. DO NO CROSS THREAD! DO NO OVERTIGHTEN! They just need to be snug so the rubber foor sucks down, seals, and you can't move it. You don't need to go crazy with the Allen key they give you. I stripped out one of the studs because I thought didn't thread the nut on first, and I had to use the other set of studs an inch away. Fortunately, the rubber boot still covers the old hole I drilled (barely), so it still ended up looking good. I also used thread locker from harbor freight on the studs, and I realized after I fully installed the roof rack that I should have painted the stripped stud, as that guy will rust with the exposed metal. My roof rack is all the way on now though, so I'm not going to worry about it. ... show more

  • Good alternative to OEM for 2019 Pilot EX. With tips.
This is a good rack for the money. I would buy it again. Read some of the other reviews before installing. Lessons learned: You can drill holes rather than cut the trim (even with the new threaded nut and collar design). I used a marker, punch, and step drill to create the holes. I broke a few of the plastic clips when removing the trim, even with a trim tool. I had better success starting in the front, unclipping one side of the trim first, then the other side - back and forth (rather than pulling/prying straight up on the trim). You do not need to remove the plastic covers at the back of the car. The broken clips still functioned well enough but it bothers me that they broke so easily. If I had to do it again, I would try to order a few spare clips before installing. There was some some silicone by some of the studs (photo) which I had to scrape off with a blade. It was easy, but necessary. The hardest part is getting the threaded nuts started. They are too short and you have to push down pretty hard on the bracket for them to reach the stud. Some were easier than others. It might have been easier with two people. One to push down on the rack while the other tightens the nut. I followed other reviewer recommendations and installed with the thick/rounded edge of the crossbar toward the front of the car (opposite the instructions). It took me less than 2 hours to install the rack. So far so good. I am currently using it to carry a ski rack and cargo box. ... show more

  • So far so good
Have not tried these on a road trip yet. Install went smooth, buy some extra trim clips before you do the install. 5 of the 8 trim molding clips broke when removing the trim, which had nothing to do with the crossbars.
