First, these things are legit sturdy and look great! Second, the folks who have trouble with install must have mechanical challenges or bad/stripped threaded holes on the roof of the vehicle. (You probably should check these before you purchase.) Not only are the instructions easy to follow and well laid out, but the tools provided are all you need. I think the important thing, as described in the instruction sheet, is DONT tighten anything until after the placement on the roof for install completion is done then you can tighten it all down. Heck, the hardest part was using the provided Allen wrench for tightening the bars down at the end because those bolts are on the underside, and its a stretch to even say that wasn't really easy. Small bolts stripped on the original Toyota dealer installed roof rack. These are very similar to the ones installed by the dealer. These do not have the plastic tethers like the originals but the tether did not prevent the loss of one of the covers. The small bolts stripped on the original so it rattled when driving. These installed quickly. hopefully they hold up at least as good as the original ones did and hopefully the covers all stay in place. ... show more

They were super easy to install, took about 15 minutes with minimal tools. They feel sturdy and look it. Honestly, they improved the look of the car. They look like they belong there. They also hold my kayaks like a champ. What surprised me the most was that after losing one of the cover caps, possibly in a vigorous car wash, I called their phone number and the lady on the other end helped me out super quick and had another sent to my house in the span of two days, for nothing but the shipping fee of five bucks! If I ever need a roof rack again I am looking up Brightlines first! ... show more

As many other reviews say, there are som installation issues that leave something to be desired, but if you read the directions carefully and some of the reviews here, then you should have no trouble installing these racks. My issue was with one of the adjustment bolts that requires an Allen wrench. One of the eight was stripped and useless. It makes no difference once the rack was installed so I'm not worried about it. The white plastic spacers are another problem. Three of the eight had fallen off in shipping. Luckily I had read some reviews about that problem, and once I fished the parts out of the trash--where my ever-vigilant wife had thrown them to keep them from the dog--I superglued them back in the proper spot and have had no issues since. The bars are strong. The instructions I received were good. The installation was easy. I needed no help. The bars hold my canoe well with the help of Yakima's canoe holder. ... show more

I ordered this roof rack with fingers crossed--some of the reviews had me a little worried. I'm happy to report these are VERY sturdy, and very easy to install. I have a 2018 Highlander and wanted a roof rack before our vacation this year. These arrived a few days earlier than expected, so that was a plus. After getting everything out of the box and checking a couple of install videos I started installation. I used a ladder, screwdriver (for prying off the caps on the Highlander roof) and socket wrench the total install time took roughly 30 minutes--and that was with hitting a minor snag: Whoever put the stickers on the bars that read "faces towards front" put it on the wrong side on one of the install bars! It ended up being a minor annoyance, since I didn't realize it was backwards until I had started putting the bars on. Once I figured that out it was simple enough to take the bar off, turn it the right direction then continue install. The racks survived a 1200 mile round-trip with a roof storage bag strapped to it with no issues whatsoever. I used ratchet straps run under the bag and roof rack and it didn't move an inch. They weren't even the slightest bit loose. They look great, are easy to install and do what they advertise, while costing less than half of what Toyota's roof rack costs! My GF bought a cargo roof bag for her 2018 Highlander XLE without realizing it would need a roof rack to secure it so I purchased this set of bars to make her world happy again. It went on pretty easily following the instructions. The only note I will add is not to tighten one side before getting the other side started and then alternate tightening the bolts (good engineering practice) until both side are snug. The covers that go over the bolts feel a little thin and I didn’t really feel them lock securely in place but I wasn’t able to pop them off so hopefully they’re on to stay. They look good, like they belong but they are not OEM quality so don’t be expecting that. It’s a good solution to her problem for the money. Fit and finish are good and they feel secure. I read other reviews before I installed them and was careful to make sure I didn’t cross thread the bolts or over tighten. ... show more

This was an ease to assemble and install. Everything is clearly labeled as to where it goes. First you have to attach the cross bars to roof mounts. I found it easier to attach the passenger side first then lightly attach the drivers side since this side is the adjustable. Once it's on the roof and falls into place, you can tighten the screws. A few people had issues with the caps. I found it easier to attach the caps from the back towards the front. Once they lined up, they securely snapped into place nicely.
