  • The best small oven made
Color: Silver Size: BOV800XL
This is the second one of these we have owned. We received one for a gift about 8 years ago and we used it multiple times daily. We did all our toasting and a good share of our baking in this oven and were impressed from the start. We abused the oven, it did not get cleaned and cared for the way it should and we used it for baking large roasts and other messy items. The convection feature is a big selling point and for a small oven it bakes/toasts/cooks very consistently. When our friend gave us one he told us that he had done a bunch of research on it and America’s Test Kitchens rated it as the best small oven. They were right. After 8 years of use/abuse the convection fan stopped working and the backlight on the controls was wonky. My wife asked me if we could get a new one for Christmas, even though this one still worked okay I agreed it would be nice to replace it with a shiny new one. For the price it is well worth it. I think for a small oven we put it to more work than it was ever designed for and it performed flawlessly. This new model seems to be every bit as well made as the one we got 8 or so years ago. The light is a light blue compared to the Amber that old one had and i prefer this color not that it makes a difference on the ability of the oven to cook/bake/toast. Bottom line, you can save a bunch of money and buy a Black and Decker or Cuisinart toaster oven and probably get by for making a bagel or heating a frozen dinner or pizza (oh, this has a pizza function AND it comes with a pizza pan) and you would do okay with one of those lesser ovens, but it probably won’t last long and you likely won’t use it to roast a chicken or prime rib roast. But if you want to save money in the long run by not having to fire up your electric range or in our case LP Gas range, and utilize this oven that heats up quickly, you will have one that will last years. Our old one got put in a box and into storage, someday we may need an extra for something and I am sure it would still work minus the convection function. Spend the extra few dollars and buy the right oven. Breville is the best for the money. ... show more

  • Probably the best toaster oven on the market currently.
Color: Silver Size: BOV800XL
Edit 12/29/2024: OK, I bought this toaster oven for Christmas 2011. So it's been in service for exactly 13 years. Replaced Christmas 2024 by a Breville Joule model number BOV950SS. To be clear this thing didn't exactly die. But for about the last year, it would sporadically refuse to start. Unplugging it from the wall and/or whacking it on the right side would cause the heating elements to start up. The "fix" would last 3 days or 3 weeks. So it technically was still working. But I figured the writing was on the wall. I assumed from the behavior that a relay on the control board was failing. And truth be told, it was getting sorta yucky looking from carbon deposits. I replaced it with the Current top of the line Joule oven from Breville. But for the $248 I paid and the 13 years of use, I have no complaints. That's about $1.58 per month for an appliance that was used several times a day 7 days a week by 3-4 people. It was super easy to live with. Intuitive controls. That's part of the reason I replaced it with another Breville product with the same control interface. I'd rate that performance SUPERB!!! ORIGINAL REVIEW: I'll add my 5 stars to the overwhelmingly favorable reviews of this product. We've only had it for a few days. It's now January 2nd, 2012. We received the Breville from Amazon Friday, December 30th. It was used to heat pizza Friday night. It cooked a crab dip for New Year's Eve. It made toast and bagels for a house full of people the morning of New Year's day. And it reheated leftovers later on New Year's day. So far, it's worked flawlessly. The controls were a bit of a concern when I first took it out of the box. I should state up front that my wife is a severe technophobe. She hates technology and the general complexity of consumer products these days. So when I plopped the Breville on our kitchen counter and she got a look at the LCD display, she started backing away instinctively thinking that this was yet another appliance that required a couple hours of reading a boring product manual. Once she actually played with the four controls (food selection, temp, time, start/stop) she got it almost immediately. She relaxed once she realized that this thing's controls are "Apple" simple. You don't need to open the manual to know how to use this Breville toaster oven. Even the kids were able to look at the controls for about 30 seconds and figure it out completely. And that's how consumer products should be designed. So it's really simple and it really works. What about construction? Well unlike cheaper toaster ovens that use stamped mild steel and black paint, the Breville body is made from a stamped sheet of real stainless steel. So there won't be any peeling paint in a few years. And the handle is a massive stainless affair that doesn't work any better than a cheaper handle but looks much better. And it's well designed to stand off from the hot oven so you won't burn your hand. The oven door has magnets embedded out of sight so that as you lower the door, the rack is pulled out a few inches so you don't have to reach into the oven to grab a piece of toast and risk burning a hand. As for the heating elements, the Breville uses the same metal resistance coils encased in glass tubing that almost every toaster oven uses. But whereas most competitors use four of these heating elements, the Breville adds a fifth element (top center) along with a heat diffuser. In addition to the increased heat output, the product designers at Breville have developed logic to cycle the various elements on and off depending upon what task the oven is asked to accomplish in order to cook food more evenly and faster. Lastly, the Breville uses a convection fan like many of its competitors to distribute heat evenly but in this unit the fan is almost silent. That's another nice quality touch that makes life a little better. All things considered, we're impressed with the Breville despite it's substantially higher price than most of the competition. For us anyway, I think the price is justified based on the materials quality, excellent design, and cooking performance. ... show more
