Every Breville product begins with a simple moment of brilliance. The Breville Smart Oven began with the simple fact that different foods require different methods of heating: some, like baked goods, need to be cooked evenly; others, like meats, need to be seared on top. Most toaster ovens fail to distribute heat in a consistent way throughout their interiors, let alone change heat distribution to suit the different foods being prepared. This is how the Breville Smart Oven stands apart: whatever the food, it adjusts its heat distribution for perfect results. For toast, high heat from top and bottom evenly crisps the outside of toast but doesn't dry out the inside (left diagram), while for baking 1500W are distributed among four elements for gentle heat and even cooking (right diagram) An oven that does the thinking for you The Smart Oven is equipped with Element IQ cooking technology, which adjusts the power of the five individual quartz heating elements to cook food more evenly and quickly. This sophisticated heating system distributes heat throughout the oven when and where it is needed, to guarantee more efficient cooking. Nine different menu options allow users to choose the best setting for the food they are cooking. In addition to dynamically distributing heat to different areas, the Smart Oven can adjust the wattage of its heating elements for even more cooking flexibility. Most ovens have elements with fixed wattage that can only switch between ON and OFF, but Element IQ functions much like a dimmer on a light switch, increasing or decreasing element power with a simple turn of the knob. The Breville Smart Oven comes with 3 accessories: a pizza pan, baking pan, and broil rack. For example, broiling requires high heat from above in order to melt and brown, so the Smart Oven activates 1500W of high heat from the top elements of the oven. On the other hand, toast needs to be cooked evenly on both sides without drying out the inside, so the Smart Oven uses high radiated heat from above and below (1800W distributed between four elements) to crisp the outside quickly. Baking utilizes another feature of the Smart Oven that contributes to even heating: convection heating. Convection cooking uses a fan to circulate hot air so all sides of the food cook at the same rate. This is particularly important for baked goods, such as cookies and cakes, which need to be cooked evenly all the way through. Each of these nine functions is preset with recommended settings, taking the guesswork out of cooking. However, each can be customized according to recipe, volume of food, or personal taste. Customized settings will remain in the memory of the oven until changed or until the oven is unplugged from the wall outlet, streamlining your cooking process. Designed with the consumer in mind The Smart Oven is carefully constructed from the most durable materials. It is attractively housed in Reinforced stainless steel, a striking addition to any kitchen. The elements themselves are composed of quartz, rather than the metal elements found in other toaster ovens. Quartz responds more quickly to heat change, which results in more even heating throughout the oven. The roomy interior is coated with a non-stick material that can safely withstand high temperatures, making cleanup easier. A crumb/drip tray that is accessible from the front of the oven (rather than the back, like many other toaster ovens) also makes it easier to clean between cooking sessions. In addition, the oven includes a patented magnetic auto-eject rack: small magnets embedded on the sides of the oven door pull the wire rack halfway from the oven when the door is opened, making food easier to remove and preventing burns. Goldilocks proportions At 18.5 x16.25 x11.25 inches, the Breville Smart Oven is not too small but not too large. It is larger than most toaster ovens, with space to comfortably fit six slices of toast, a 13-inch pizza, or a whole Chicken. However, as a countertop convection oven, it is more space-efficient than a conventional wall oven. A smaller oven means less time to heat up and less time to cook, perfect for preparing a meal in a hurry (or for cooks who like to create in the heat of the moment). This also translates into a cooler kitchen (particularly convenient in the hot summer months) and less energy consumed. Broke three months out of warranty - not durable
I'll start off by saying that I loved this oven. It did everything I needed it to and more, including toast, roasts, braises, and baking. That's why I'm so disappointed that it broke just three months after the warranty expired. Out of nowhere the oven just became nonresponsive (blank screen). This oven is incredible but it is EXPENSIVE. It is TOO expensive to only last fifteen months, that is what I would expect from some disposable cheap product. I'm going to contact Breville customer service but I'm not holding my breath for a favorable resolution outside the warranty period. I'll update this review with what comes next. If you are set on this oven, I'd recommend paying extra for the warranty. Otherwise, look elsewhere. But even the extended warranty is only two years, and if it is necessary to replace this every two years I would still say your better off looking elsewhere for both a durable and quality product. I'd say this oven is good quality but not durable enough to warrant the cost. EDIT: My friend recommended a solution to my problem - contact American Express and use their 1-year warranty extension program. I did this instead of trying to navigate through Breville's customer service (which seemed harder and more time-consuming than it should be). AMEX did a great job, and just refunded me my money. I did some follow-up research to see what compact oven to buy, and it seems like enough people are having issues with their Breville out-of-warranty that I didn't want to risk it again. I ended up going with the new Cuisinart TOB-260N, and I'm so far very pleased with the purchase. It isn't as intuitive to use as the Breville, but the build quality is just as nice and the cooking results are as good if not better. The extra accessories with this oven were really nice (pizza oven and extra rack on top of broiler pan and baking sheet). I also think the Cuisinart baking sheet is higher quality than the one I got with the Breville. Oh, and the most important thing - there is a 3 year warranty on the Cuisinart! I think that says a lot about the longevity that Cuisinart expects from this kind of product. Also, when I purchased my Cuisinart it was $190, nearly $100 less than the Breville.

Thermostat/ fuse went out short of two years.
Love the way this oven functions. Toasted wonderfully, heated leftovers well. Baked French fries, pizza quickly and perfect. Loved it..... however, after close to two years, the display went blank! Determined to fix it, I opened it and replaced the thermostat with the help of my electrician neighbor. I was so happy to have fixed it for $5. The oven does get VERY hot. That was last fall(2017), now after less than one year, looks like it is blank again and I’m sure it’s the thermostat again. Not sure I want to do the work again just for a years usage... but not sure there is a better toaster oven out there that will last longer than two years! UPDATE: just changed the fuse again and it’s back to working ... hoping it will last longer this time. Wondering why they don’t use a better fuse that can be reset? Glad to have it working again and not cluttering the landfill!:)

Looks are deceiving
At first this iven seemed great. I like the knobs which make it very easy to change setting, time and temp. Little magnet that pulls tray out little bit when opening the oven was another plus. Everything seemed great at first. It worked fine for about a year and then convention fan stopped working which to me is a big thing. Shortly after that pressing a start/stop button would do different things. At times I would have to press it 10 times to start or stop, other times it would toggle convention fan, which doesn't work but it makes sound, and sometimes it would do what it's supposed to. I also realized that preheating the oven happens on a timer and is not based on the actual temperature which is very simple and easy functionality. If you preheat the oven to a temp, then stop it and set it to preheat again, you will have to wait again the same amount of time. Then I decided to check the actual temperature inside. I was cooking fish at 400 for 8 minutes, when i decided to actually check the temp of the fish using thermometer, and to my surprise, thermometer says 134 while the oven states 400. I hope this helps someone.

Not durable
Purchased April 2015, died Dec. 7 2016 -- a few months after warranty. When you pay $250 for a Toaster Oven, it should last more than 18 months. While it worked -- and I used it almost every day -- it worked very well. I used it for everything from morning toast, to roasting veggies and meat. It performed these tasks well. Until today, when it just died -- probably something in the fancy electronic control system burned out. Even if you could find someone to do it, most likely not worth the time and cost. My advice, buy something much cheaper. Then, if it does in a year or so, you wont feel as cheated as I feel today.

This oven WAS working great until today
This oven WAS working great until today... it just died on me while toasting some bread. No indication, or warning whatsoever that anything was amiss. It just completely went dark halfway through toasting; disappointed as we've only had this for 22 months, and this is one of the more expensive toaster ovens on the market at the time we purchased.

non stick pans will crack
I've had this toaster oven since July 2014. The oven itself is good. We use it often. But the pans they included - a pizza sheet and roasting pan - within months they started cracking. The coating cracked I should say. So I put aluminum foil over it because it would be dangerous to cook with it otherwise. This is what it looks like currently. That's not dried food. It is the black non stick surface peeling off.

Stopped working
Purchased in January 2015. Great oven, but began having problems starting about 15 months old. Just shy of 2 years now and the unit doesn't work. Some of the issues: One: The panel flashes like a strobe light and has to be unplugged to clear the problem. Two: the oven heats up to the desired temperature but shuts off after the door is opened to insert the food. Too much money for an oven that works for less than 2 years. Very disappointed.
