An improvement over Series 7
I had been using a Braun Series 7 for several years but happened upon a review of the Series 8 and decided to give it a try. In broad terms the Series 8 delivers a better shave - closer and smoother. I have uneven roughness of my facial hair and in the tougher spots the Series 7 took more passes than the Series 8 and the Series 8 does a much better job. However, there are a couple of annoying aspects of the Series 8 that I have had to learn to live with. One is the on-off switch. On the Series 7 the switch is recessed into the body of the shaver and in a slightly different spot on the body, but on the Series 8 it’s not recessed and it’s in a spot where it’s easy to inadvertently turn it off while shaving. This means you have to retrain yourself on how you hold the shaver or you will be repeatedly turning it off. Not a fatal flaw but annoying. The other annoyance is that the cleaning and charging station always tells you that you need to hit the cleaning button after every shave whereas the Series 7 indicated that you needed a cleaning after every other shave or sometimes after every third shave. I think this means you are going to go through more of the cleaning fluid than with a Series 7. I have opted to put up with these annoyances in favor of the closer and smoother shave but others might view that trade off differently.

Used brawn razors for last 35+ years
Braun has been my go to razor for 35+ years. High-quality, well engineered designs. I upgraded from the series 7 to the series 8. The last razor lasted me six or more years. I only replaced it because I wanted a new one. It’s a good idea to replace the head and screen every 6 to 8 months. Very easy to use and shaves close, with no irritation. I use Lectric Shave (pre-shave liquid) just to make the cutting easier.

Best value in the Braun line
I previously had a last-generation Series 7 which lasted for about 10 years, so no complaints. When I bought my last shaver, the series 7 was pretty much the top of the line but In the current lineup, the Series 7 is a step down. The Series 8 is pretty close to feature parity with a couple of omissions and one addition. The two omissions are related to the “hygiene”/cleaning modes. In the old Series 7 it had a bar display to tell you how dirty the razor was. Handy if you only wanted to run a cleaning cycle after a few shaves. Now it is a single icon that pretty much comes on after each shave. The old Series 7 cleaning station had three cleaning levels, from quick to extended. The Series 8 has a single cycle. You have to go to the Series 9 to get multi-levels. The additional feature is that now the remaining cutter life is a bar display, so you can see when you are getting close to replacement time where in the old Series 7 it was just an icon that appeared. So that is a nice feature. The series 9 is a significant increase in price and the replacement cutter is twice as expensive so long term costs are also higher. The Series 8 gives a very good shave (better than my old series 7, which was pretty good). I didn’t feel that I was likely to get a significant increase is shaving performance to justify the cost My Series 8 model included the “PowerCase”, which is a travel case with a battery to give you a 50% charge. This razor battery gives up to 4 weeks of shaves so the case gives you up to 6 weeks. I generally don’t travel for more than two weeks so the power case might not be that useful and it is quite large and bulky. I attached a couple of pics to show the difference. This bundle was on sale so it was actually cheaper than the bundle with the normal travel case. If I can find the Series 8 travel for sale by itself I might get it but it actually kinda fits in the old Series 7 travel case with a little coaxing 😉. Overall, I think after a week of use, I am happy with the Series 8.

Lots of moola for meh. Head removal seems awkwardly designed.
I can't compare this razor to other electric foil razors since I got it to switch from shaving with a safety razor. I'm not overly impressed with the shaving experience. This may be more for general compromises between electric and true shaves, however. A few things about this model...1) the buttons to release the head for cleaning are not very supple--one does not move at all and the other takes firm pressure to release the tab holding the head to the unit. It feels like it is at risk of breaking/cracking with each use since only one button functions and with very firm pressure. I can't tell if this is the actual design or if there is a quality control miss on the shaver I got, 2) Shaves will look nice but you may notice some uneven spots that feel more rough than others, 3) the travel charging case and cleaning unit are well-designed and automatic--the package only includes one cord, however, so if you want to charge the travel case you will need to separate the cord from your cleaning unit at home to pack in your luggage--two plugs would've been an easy cheap fix. 3) the unit does save counter space which is nice. 4) the price seems extraordinary for what you get and I wonder if I should've kept things simple with an under-$100 option. I'm not sure the shave is any better for the money spent (over $200)--I was persuaded by the gadgets involved in the package but not sure they're necessary or worth the asking price here. I pulled a 25+ year old Norelco rotary shaver from storage and used it while this was shipping and the shave took a little longer but wasn't really a worse shave than the brand new one. The Norelco was maybe $30-$40 at its time. If this lasts as long I might not complain on the price, but if it has a short shelf life then it'll be the last Braun for me.

Great shave
This gives an excellent, close shave. The battery lasts a long time because there is a battery in both the shaver and the case. I don't know how long, as so far I have only used it without charging for a week, but the battery indicator is still at max. Comes with a wet cleaning system you can use every day (but you will need to purchase Braun's cleaning liquid). It gets in close under my nose, and the sideburn trimmer works well.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!! NO NO NO... I have never spent so much on a razor. I did alot of research and found that this razor kept popping up as the best. I didnt go to sponsored pages, i try to stay away from reviews that are or could be biased because of kick backs, etc. So i was looking for a really good razor because i hate shaving but i hate stuble even more. So i bought this razor. It comes in a flashy box with all kinds of cool accessories and a really cool charging station that looks futuristic, Its very nice i will give them that. They paid alot of attention to details and it really stands out. BUT and its a very big BUT, it does not shave worth a poop. I can go over and over my face, wet or dry and still feel stubble. Wet is better, but neither is good. I still have to use my gillette 5 blade razor to get that close shave. I feel like it was over $300 down the drain. I am VERY DISAPPOINTED!!! if you want a close shave youd be better off buying a $90 remington tripple blade type razor with the 3 circular blades on top. It cuts and leaves your face more smooth than this thing. It will go down in history with other huge regrets and money wasted. Very disappointed with Amazon and Braun.

Where has this been all my life?!
Honestly I am a total beginner to electric razors, so my opinion may not be worth a ton, but I absolutely love this thing. I’m 40 this march, and until I bought this 7 or so months ago I had only ever tried one electric razor before and it was so bad I just assumed electric razors were garbage. I am able to get ALMOST as close with this as I am any disposable razor no matter how many blades it has or how stupid expensive a 3 pack is….. More importantly it is much less mess and much less effort, and I don’t have to worry about terrible bumps and redness. No tugging or pulling, no struggling to get through thick hairs, or stopping in the middle of a shave. You don’t have to clean it manually halfway through. That was my experience the one and only other experience I had. I really like the self cleaning base, and was both impressed and disgusted with how much hair and other nastiness gathered in the bottom of the tank the first time I replaced it. 7 months later and the blade seems just as sharp as the day I bought it. The battery also seems to sho no signs of age, as I don’t think I’ve ever seen it lose one notch in the time it takes me to shave, and if I don’t charge it between days because I forget to put it in the stand, same story full battery. Me (white 40 M) and my husband (black 50 M) both use it at least every other day. Though neither of us go full bare face (chin strap or goatee usually) , 2 adults using one razor for 7 months and working like new seems damn impressive to me. My husband has quite a bit thicker hair as a black man. He can’t get quite as close as me, but he can’t even attempt to use a traditional disposable razor without major skin problems, and either has to use a straight edge or go to the barber shop. Using this in between the barber has saved a lot of time and money for him, without the hassle and stress of trying to use a straight edge at home. Like I said in the beginning, I am not sure how this measures up to any other modern electric razor, but if you’re like me and have not used a quality electric razor in a long time, or ever, it is really worth a try!! Safe to say they have really come a long way in the 20 years it’s been since I tried one, either that or I just used the wrong one 20 years ago.
