Yes, the contrast of this clock is pretty bad, and you do need direct light to be able to read it during the day. BUT for me the most important features of a battery powered travel alarm are 1) a good light for night viewing (and this one is great, with an easy to use touch feature), 2) a clear indicator that the alarm IS set (and this one has a very easy to see notification bell on the screen), 3) the alarm time shown on the screen (which this one does!), and finally 4) the alarm goes off when you set it, not 15 min before or after (and the digital function on this clock takes care of that). It would be nice if you could read it more easily during the day, but the rest of the features make up for it. And besides, while traveling I really only try to read it at night using the built in light. ... show more

The new digital version of the legendary Braun Travel clock leaves the nostalgic look of the past behind. The iconic alarm sounds remains. The display is easy to read. It illuminates at night by simply touching the clock. at the top. Unfortunately, the light is way to bright and there is no way to lower it. Further, touching the clock a second time to turn the light back off would have been a nice feature - would have been... Instead you need to wait till it switches off itself. It is nice that the alarm icon in the display (bell) indicates whether the alarm is set or not, and that you can set the alarm on a 24h time frame instead of 12hrs on the classic version (because this version "knows" the difference between am and pm, e.g., or 14h vs 2h). Overall still a reliable companion with room for improvement. ... show more
