Description

We like this carafe a lot, with a few caveats: 1) The bottom of the base is narrower than the other parts of the carafe, making this unit not as sturdy as it could be. If you accidently brush/knock it (when empty) while cleaning the countertop, it will wobble and tip over. Not ideal for something made of glass. 2) The rubber corset / band in the middle does not easily detach, meaning it stays on during the dishwasher cycle. Not ideal if you live in a hard water area, as calcium collects between the corset and the carafe. 3) For such a popular carafe, they do not keep a good stock available to retailers. We could get neither the size (in ounces/cups) nor the band color we wanted, and there was no estimated lead time for same. In general, we have always been fans of Bodum, in particular their espresso, coffee and beer glasses and mugs, and their French Presses. This carafe is a good line item, but would be great with just a few tweaks. ... show more

    • Looks good but drips too fast and coffee watered down

The coffee maker is almost perfect, only bad part is that it drips water too quickly leaving the coffee tasting watered down. I've yet to try putting a basket filter inside the filter they provide to see if that makes it any better. It does work well if I replace the top with another ceramic drip filter I have. Edit: after doing a bit of research, I figured out the trick to making good coffee with this. Put 1.5 spoons of grounded coffee in the filter and PACK it down. Then pour water slowly into the center of the packed coffee. The coffee will spread upwards and allow you to pour more water. Stop immediately if you notice water starting to trickle faster. Then wait for water level to come down before pouring more water. The trick is to pour water without letting the ground at the bottom of the filter rise up. Resulting coffee dripped this way tasted pretty good and rich. One more tip to get an idea of how slow you need to pour... turn the faucet water on to a trickle and have it hit the side of the filter. If it goes right through, turn down the water trickle rate down until the water actually runs down the side instead of through the filter. You can also try this with the plastic sides. ... show more

I’ve been on the fence about purchasing this forever it seems. Now I’m kicking myself that I waited so long. I received this yesterday afternoon, and this morning had the best cup of coffee in years. First, the carafe itself is beautiful. I love the double wall feature that helps keep the coffee I haven’t drank yet hot. It pours easily from the spout. And the filter is very easy to clean. I do prefer using a paper filter in it however, to prevent any ground coffee sediment from dripping into that last cup in the carafe. Rinse the paper filter prior to use, as others have mentioned, and you won’t get any of that paper taste to your coffee. The Melitta #4 filter works beautifully. My only criticism was the way this was packaged. It did arrive in perfect condition. However that only happened because of the care of the Amazon delivery person. While there was ample cushioning between the carafe and the top of the box, there was absolutely no cushioning between the carafe and the bottom of the box. ... show more

At work, I always made French press, my go-to. The clean up is tedious but worth it. Several fellow coffee lovers have left the office, leaving me and one or two drinking, making the clean up less worth it. With these pour overs, the clean up is easy. Toss out the filter with the grounds. Much more office space friendly. But this glass design with the cork collar still looks stylish on the break room counter with the espresso maker and other devices. I used unbleached bamboo filters, course ground beans from our conical grinder, and a little patience pouring over the coffee. At work, the time it takes to pour over to get the desired extraction rate can keep you at it longer than you might like of on the clock. Otherwise, the faster clean up makes up for it easily. And there are no complaints about the coffee. The filter absorbs some oil so some coworkers preferred that over the more robust French Press. I keep both on hand:) ... show more

Well I’ve tried every way to make coffee there is. One way there’s too much clean up involved. Another too many coffee grounds down the drain. Another with every cup a filter is needed; and filters are wayyyy too expensive. But this way for one person is perfect. 2 large cups of coffee in the morning is all I need. Let the grounds drain well then just flip them in the trash. Coffee is good. And don’t feel guilty about the filters. Need I forget? Simple. ... show more

This has been great for me so far. The material on the cork holder is nice, though it feels a little cheap. It doesn't detract from it at all for me. I appreciate that you can remove it and the glass is dishwasher safe. If having a really clean cup of coffee is important to you, then you'll still prefer a paper filter. I found that with the shape of the instrument any grounds that filtered through are easy to keep out of my cup, and I personally prefer reusable, metal filters like this. ... show more

This is a new form of making a hot breakfast beverage for me! I stopped drinking coffee years ago so I drink Teccino chicory (helps heal leaky gut) coffee substitute! The chicory grounds work perfectly with this method; but it takes more personal attention vs using a Keurig and letting the process tend itself! However, the flavor is worth it!
