Description

GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK “A twisty tale of murder and love gone wrong, rife with bone-chilling revelations . . . This is a riveting debut, and Disha Bose is a writer to watch.”—Joshilyn Jackson, New York Times bestselling author of Mother May I A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, CrimeReads She was the perfect wife, with the perfect life. You would kill to have it. Ciara Dunphy has it all—a loving husband, well-behaved children, and a beautiful home. Her circle of friends in their small Irish village go to her for tips about mothering, style, and influencer success—a picture-perfect life is easy money on Instagram. But behind the filters, reality is less polished. Enter Mishti Guha: Ciara’s best friend. Ciara welcomed Mishti into her inner circle for being . . . unlike the other mothers in the group. Discontent in a marriage arranged for her by her parents back in Calcutta, Mishti now raises her young daughter in a country that is too cold, among children who look nothing like her. She wants what Ciara has—the ease with which she moves through the world—and, in that sense, Mishti might be exactly like the other mothers. And there’s earth mother Lauren Doyle: born, bred, and the butt of jokes in their village. With her disheveled partner and children who run naked in the yard, they’re mostly a happy lot, though ostracized for being the singular dysfunction in Ciara’s immaculate world. When Lauren finds an unlikely ally in Mishti, she decides that her days of ridicule are over. Then Ciara is found murdered in her own pristine home, and the house of cards she’d worked so hard to build comes crumbling down. Everyone seems to have something to gain from Ciara’s death, so if they don’t want the blame, it may be the perfect time to air their enemies’ dirty laundry. In this dazzling debut novel, Disha Bose revolutionizes age-old ideas of love and deceit. What ensues is the delicious unspooling of a group of women desperate to preserve themselves. Read more

  • Very interesting; keeps you intrigued.
Format: Paperback
It was good.

  • Not entirely sure where this was supposed to go...2&1/2 stars
Format: Kindle
Depiction of this book isn't accurate at all. Portrayed as a thriller, whodunnit, it really is just a book told from three different women's POV about one of those women who happen to die. The book basically goes thru each day looking through the eyes of Ciara, Lauren and Mithsi. The book is supposed to be about Ciara's death which is only vaguely mentioned in one of the other characters monologues citing that she can't be the one to find her. Then it goes on to depict the day-to-day events in each characters life but does let us know exactly what happened in the end. I wasn't sitting here wondering who killed Ciara or when we were going to find out. In fact, I forgot that's the direction the book was (trying to) head and often wondered where all of it was going. Disappointed because the characters are likable (even the unlikeable one) and the writing is good. It just didn't tie together well at all. 2&1/2 stars 😐 ... show more

  • Really Surprising ending
Format: Kindle
A small Irish town where families are tied together by many events and friendships. Where lines are drawn. The stories of Mother’s and how they parent. Stories of social media. The ending was really surprising.

  • Lots of twists
Format: Kindle
Slow to s t art but probably bc they're introducing all the characters. Once you got into it, sometimes hard to put down. Not a huge fan of the cliff hanger ending.

  • I Kept Waiting
Format: Hardcover
We picked this for our moms’ book club, and I read it in a couple days. I was very engaged at the start. Great writing style and character building, but I kept waiting and waiting for something to happen. I also wondered if it had been over-edited for an American audience as there really was no Irish-ness to it except for the many references to it being in Ireland, the cold weather, and the occasional “mammy.” I felt like it could take place in any American town when I hoped to be transported from my town in Southern California to an interesting Irish village full of colorful characters with colorful language. Instead the main character felt like she could be an annoying instagramming neighbor. This writer shows real promise though. ... show more

  • Very Disappointed.
Format: Kindle
This story contains unhealthy relationships with the focus on women. I feel like women are portrayed as unable to make healthy relationship choices - unrelenting sad and transactional relationships. Once again women are victims, and we are stronger and more compassionate than this story portrays.

  • GREAT READ & JUICY
Format: Kindle
This story is worthy of a television series! Would make a great show. It's one of those "you can't put it down" books. Can't wait to see what the author writes next.

  • Chick Lit Noir
Format: Kindle
Terrific chick lit noir beach read about mothers in a small Irish village. I would not call it a mystery, it's more like chick lit with a death involved. I kept reading it because I wanted to find out what happened. It was a quick read. Several of the characters are not likeable but the plot flowed and it kept me reading. ... show more
