This is a great little weed eater. I purchased this for my daughter, who was in a bad car accident and has been unable to mow her front lawn on a hill. I also didn’t want her to worry about transporting fuel in the van with her kids or the difficulty of getting it started with a pull cord. With an electric weed eater, it’s going to start every time. =) It came almost fully assembled, and the pieces not attached were simple to affix. It is small, lightweight, and easy to use. Due to the size, it may pose a problem for someone of tall stature. The quality is decent. It came with a spool of line, but if you have a large yard… beware, you will need to buy more. The line cut through the weeds with ease. It runs out quickly. One of the features I purchased it for is actually the thing I am deducting a star for… the wheel edging feature. It is much easier to edge without the wheel. The wheel is a bit awkward, but it does work. I like to be able to get a good, clean line and move fast. This did not allow for that. I had an old Greenworks string trimmer that I found in the basement after I moved into my new home. Maybe it was just old, but the auto-feed didn't work well, the line was always running out, and I spent more time rewinding the spool than cutting down weeds. I had almost lost my faith in string trimmers entirely. You can spend $300 on one, but how much better are they? I didn't know. This Black & Decker was only $50, and although it's corded, my roommate convinced me it was worth not having to do the dance of recharging batteries, plus having full 110v power. Some (easy) assembly required out of the box, and this thing was basically plug & play. I did read through the owner's manual first, which gave amateur me some confidence through a few helpful tips. I use it not only for cutting down weeds, but also for cleaning out weeds from the cracks in my sidewalk, and the edger wheel is very helpful for that. More importantly, the line had no problems all the way to the end of the spool. Faith restored, there are good string trimmers in the world. That being said, be aware that the line it comes with isn't very long. My lawn is medium-size, and it ran out about halfway through. The Black & Decker replacement spools are $10 / 30 ft (much longer), but it goes through line, so this could really add up. Replacing the spool was easy, and I was able to finish my lawn with plenty line to spare. A quick search on Amazon reveals off brand spools at $15 / 12-pack. I haven't tested them yet, but the price difference is so great that I'm going to give them a chance. ... show more

I have owned and used all types of trimmers. After moving across the country, I had to sell my old ones (and all my other lawn tools) to make more space in the moving truck. The house we are renting requires us to keep up with the yard work but because it is A) only about 200sqFt of yard and B) I am prohibited from storing flammables on the porperty, I bought this as a way to cover get the job done. Anyway, I used it for about 4 weeks, totaling maybe 6 hours use and ran through two spools of line. I'm not sure if it just releases too much line or if the line is too flimsy. Regardless, I have never seen a trimmer blo through line like this. Maybe that is why it was so cheap... Aside from that, it does what it is suppossed to do. ... show more

Overall the B&D string trimmer was awesome. I bought it mainly because of the price. I figured if it did the job once it was worth it. I was whacking the weed and grass on my property for almost six hours and this unit did the job with no complaints or issues. It is now in the shed and will be used next year when I have to clear the property. I tore through six spools of line. It was easy to change and get right back to work. The line is pretty flimsy, but the spools are cheap and I bought a 12 pack and was ready for that. I went with a corded unit because most battery operated trimmers battery life sucks and I don't have time to sit around waiting for batteries to charge. The corded version of this product was great. This is the second one I purchase, I broke the first one I owned for about 3 years.. bought a battery one but wasn’t as good as this one so had to order this one again. The refills are cheap (usually buy the pack of 3), the auto feeder is nice so I don’t have to keep pulling manually and doesn’t get stuck like the double ones usually do. For the price, I was not expecting much. I have a small yard and could not justify the price or storage space for a gas-powered or larger unit. So, I took a gamble on Black & Decker. There were a few negative reviews of this product, but reading them ( as I always do ), it seems like most of the 1s were shipping problems, broken on delivery, or user error. A weed-eater is a pretty simple mechanism, so I took a chance and it seems to have paid off. This took "literally" 3-4 minutes to unbox and set up. I did not even have to look at the manual, though I did glance at it before I used it to see if there was anything important I missed. I missed nothing. I circled the yard clearing up weeds and along the house and brick edging in 10-15 minutes. Got some nice exercise and sun and the unit gets compressed for storage and is easily put away. I recommend this for light yard duty, and perhaps even a larger yard if you are on a budget and probably will not abuse the tool. Just be patient and let the string do the cutting. Oh, and did I mention this thing is super-light? I was initially skeptical it could do the job when I unboxed it, but its lightweight is a plus. As always, if I have a problem with this, it breaks or turns out to be too expensive to operate ( some reviewers have claimed the ate up a whole spool of filament in their first use - mine did not ) I will return and update my review. Very ... no, exceedingly happy not to have spent a ton of money on something that is not that important to me, but needs to get done, and to have gotten a superior tool for my time and money. This is a powerful machine that cuts well. It is easy to maneuver and to change from one angle to another. All the features are user friendly. The machine is definitely geared to cutting/trimming/edging grass and small weeds. It also cuts through small vines. I tried using it to trim a clump of iris and it did not work well because it tore the leaves instead of cutting them. I bought the corded one because I heard that the rechargeable ones are much heavier, have less cutting power and because they lose that power as the battery runs down. Running this machine with the cord attached is a small inconvenience for me and worth dragging the cord with me because I get more benefit from the increased cutting power and because I never run out of power. However, for some people, the danger of tripping over the cord would be reason to go cordless instead. Changing the spool which houses the cutting string is very easy and replacement spools are readily available and reasonably priced. Ira from NC ... show more
