  • UPDATE: Great for floors. Great customer support after machine died.
Style: Crosswave
THIS IS AN UPDATE TO MY ORIGINAL REVIEW. After using this for about a year, I started having trouble. It would trip my GFCI outlet (worked OK on non-GFCI), then after a few weeks it died all-together. HERE'S THE GOOD NEWS--GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE! I contacted the Bissell warranty service, was connected within two minutes, and explained my problem to the Rep. She first suggested that I bring it to an authorized Bissell service center to have it checked out. Upon learning that the closest center was 45 miles away, she offered to send me a brand new replacement. I just had to email her a photo of the plate with the model/serial number and she'd take care of the rest. She kept me updated on the status of the return, and within a week the replacement arrived. Tried it out today and it works fine. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I've used this a number of times over the past few months, mostly for our vinyl floors, and occasionally for rugs. 1. Does great job on our floors. I thought we didn't track in much dirt, and our floors don't look particularly dirty. BUT after running this and seeing the opaque chocolate-colored water in the dirty water tank, I learned how filthy a "clean" looking floor can really be. This machine really delivers. 2. It is pretty easy to fill and use. The clean water tank is easy to remove, fill and install. The dirty water tank is easy to remove, but make sure to rinse it thoroughly in your utility sink. It really catches a lot of crud. 3. Cleaning is straightforward. I get best results when I turn on the floor mode (control is easy to reach with your thumb) and hold the trigger when I push it forward, but turn of the power when I pull it back. That way the solution has time to do its job before I go over it again for the final rinse-cleaning. The manual says to wait 5 minutes before the second go-over, but I find a minute or two is plenty. 4. I've used it a few times on area rugs. It is fine for our use, but would not make sense for really large rugs or carpets. For that you should get a heavy-duty machine. As with floors, it gets a lot of grime out. 5. Ergonomics are pretty good. Easy to slip into relatively tight spots. You can loop the cord in a slot near the handle to keep it off the floor, but it sometimes slips. 6. It's easy to carry with the built in handle. 7. Some reviewers complain of streaking. Not a problem with us, but streaking might be a function of the surface and the amount of detergent used. I use half the recommended amount and it works fine for our needs. 8. Cleaning after use takes a bit of practice. First, empty, rinse and reinstall the dirty water tank, The manual recommends using the included cleaning tray (set the cleaner in it, add water to the tray, and run the machine to clear out the system). But I find that awkward. I just put about 3/4" of water in the utility sink and run it there. It cleans the brush and sends the water to the dirty-water tank. If the water is still dirty, add more water to the sink and do it again. Note: You then need to rinse the brush by hand, so it's best to do that in your utility sink (if you have one). 8. Overall the cleaner does a thorough cleaning on our floors. Recommended. ... show more

  • Ingenious Design – Incredible Cleaning Machine
Style: Crosswave
The title pretty much sums up my opinion and experience with my recently purchased Bissell Crosswave 1785. It’s rare for me to be so impressed with a household appliance, and in particular floor cleaners, which I’ve not had stellar experience with generally. And this one is advertised to do both hard floor surfaces and rugs, but not carpet (more on that later). The Crosswave is exceptionally engineered with BOTH the cleaning and user in mind. From the time I started opening the box until the device was assembled and I began using for cleaning my porcelain tile kitchen floor was 15 minutes. It is very well thought out and designed. Although it comes with detailed instructions, this thing is designed so they are really not needed. Everything snaps into place including the roller and cover and clean water and waste tanks. And it even comes with a storage bottom tray the Crosswave fits neatly onto and it even cleans itself up to a degree – after use, just pour clean water into the tray, turn on the machine and the rollers spin and vacuums the water into the tank. Then all you do is remove both tanks, dump the dirty water into the toilet or somewhere, do a final rinse of the roller and store it. It makes some noise, but nothing unexpected for a combo cleaner/vacuum. And on that note, it is not a dry vacuum and I will never use it as one. It is a cleaner that vacuums dirty water from the floor as it dispenses cleaning solution. Another huge feature is the long 25’ power cord which was long enough for cleaning every room without plugging into another outlet. How well does it clean? Incredibly. Usually when something is advertised to be dual or multi-use, you can expect one but not both to be high quality but in the case of the Crosswave, it does an exceptional job on both hard floors and rugs. I was expecting mediocre on the rugs, but nope, it cleans them exceptionally well and makes them look like new. The instructions clearly state it is for area rugs and not carpet but I used it on both with great results. It made my area rugs look like new and I only used the multi-use brush. I’m going to purchase the rug brush to see if it works even better. And I have white carpet in my home office with low pile that was fairly dirty so I first vacuumed with my vacuum cleaner then used the Crosswave and was really impressed. It is not longer a dingy white, but back closer to its normal color. There are two switch modes, hardwood and rugs and it dispenses about twice the liquid on the rug mode, but my rugs and carpet were bone dry in 8 hours or so. I suggest dry vacuuming after dry to make the pile stand up better. Since my tile floors were pretty dirty, I used the rug mode for them the first time and it seemed to work a bit better in cleaning the ground in messes. The second time I used hard floor mode and it worked great. All my tiles are porcelain with shallow grout and it even cleaned the grout very well. That was another issue some complained about. And I couldn’t believe how filthy the water was in the dirty water tank. The first time thru on the kitchen and entrance floors, there was a lot of gritty substance in the tank which I imagine was salt/sand still from winter that got tracked in and I never got fully cleaned with my throw away pad steam cleaner, which I’ll never use again. There is a lot of review mentions about streaking. I had none on any of the tile floors, so I’m not sure what is going on with that topic. But I did make multiple sweeps over the area so perhaps that helps. I can’t think of any cons/negatives except perhaps they highly recommend using the Bissell cleaning solutions which are a bit pricey. I’m not on much of a budget, so I’ll do so since they work sooooo well. But you can do the math – I used about 3 oz per 130 sq ft. I used the 8 oz bottle that came with the Crosswave the first day, but that was for two rooms of tile, and a couple area rugs. One last thing. My hardwood floors are not sealed, so I did not use it on them so cannot discuss that type of flooring. This is one of the best purchases I’ve made in a long while. ... show more

  • Superb customer service and great machine
Style: Crosswave
I'll start by saying my Crosswave gets ALOT of use. My house is almost all hardwood or tile. With kids and pets a day rarely goes by where I'm not at least spot cleaning with this. It worked wonderfully for about 6 months then I started having troubles with the sprayer heads not squirting the cleaning solution. I really tried to avoid calling customer service 😒 I had a similar machine from a different company before this one and customer service was a nightmare. I tried all the trouble shooting hints and nothing worked so I finally called. I was on the phone maybe 20 minutes and within a week my machine was replaced with a new one since it was still under warranty. I was so thankful! Now pros and cons.... It has preformed great on hardwood, tile and an outdoor rug we use as an area rug. It sucks up dust, crumbs and car litter with no issues. It's even sucked up a few toys or strings by accident and it was easy to fix each time. It doesn't get clogged with pet hair or hold onto smells as long as you follow the cleaning instructions. It's very easy to remove and clean the brush and filter both of which have held up very well. I suggest getting an extra of each so one set can dry while you're using the other. CoNS- The only 2 things I can really complain about( and honestly they aren't awful enough to really loose a whole star but since I can't take half a star I'll round down). There's a dead zone about 2 inches from the wall that the machine can't reach and it does leave a bit of water behind of you leave it sitting on the floor. Easily solved by placing it in the tray it comes with though. Overall I'm very pleased with this and can't live without it at this point. I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for something like this. ... show more
