Using an excessive amount of water solution (16 oz. water + 8 drops liquid soap such as baby shampoo) will make handling the film easier. Spraying water solution on the adhesive as you pull off the liner will prevent the film from being too sticky. This will also reduce or eliminate the potential for wrinkles and bubbles during installation. Once the film is properly placed on the window, the soapy water should be pushed out using the squeegee with appropriate pressure applied. Attached to the film is a clear layer called the backing liner. This layer covers the adhesive or cling side of the actual film layer; the liner needs to be removed when you install the film. The best way is to use two pieces of tape on a corner (one on each side, facing each other). One piece would grab onto the film, and the other onto the liner. Press the tapes together, and then slowly separate the two pieces to pull the two layers away from each other. Static reaction happens when the backing liner is taken apart from the film. It may cause the film to stick to itself, which makes that film useless. To prevent this, spray the soapy water solution as you carefully pull off the backing liner. The window surface should also be sprayed with plenty of the soapy water. This can be used to clean the window before applying the film, and allows you to move the film around on the window without it getting stuck on the surface. Why does the film not stick to the window? / Why did the film fall off from the window a few hours later? There is a clear "backing liner" layer attached to the actual "film" layer. The backing liner covers the adhesive on the film so that the film does not prematurely stick. When you install the film, the backing liner needs to be peeled off from it. Will I be able to see out? / Why can't I see out from inside? This is an opaque film, so it blocks view in both directions at all times. They can be used in partitions and other places where view is not needed. (Daytime privacy films allow you to see out while having privacy from outside during daytime.) Why did bubbles (or spots where film is not adhering properly) form after the film was installed? This is due to the moisture left inside. The film may appear fine when installed, but afterwards, the water can interfere with the adhesive and cause bubbles to form. Apply firm pressure with the squeegee and push out the water to prevent bubbles. Can this film be used on dual pane windows? This film is not recommended for dual pane windows due to the higher heat absorption rate. This can build up heat between the panes, which would stress the window. (Heat absorption is different from heat blocking rate.) Is the film applied on the interior or exterior side of the window? This film is intended for the interior side.

This stuff is amazing - it really gets the job done! We're night owls and often sleep during the day, so blackout film was a no-brainer. We also have a couple windows in our bedroom and living room that let a lot of sun in anywhere between sunrise and 3PM, so we needed something thick and high quality... If you're in a similar situation, this is the product for you! It's durable, stays in place, blocks almost all light (on the brightest days, only a faint grey glow comes through), and can be removed easily. You can compare the light level inside and outside in the attached pictures, which were taken mid afternoon. A few tips if you're using it for the first time... - The film is somewhat difficult to apply, especially if you want it streak and air bubble free, so you may want another person there to help - The larger and taller the windows, the more difficult it'll be to apply, so again, you may want an extra set of hands - The film is attached to clear plastic that you peel away to reveal the sticky side -- It's quite difficult to peel them apart, so I recommend using (sharp) fingernails or the X-acto knife that comes with the film to separate them - The film comes with instructions, an X-acto blade, and a little rubber-lined card to smooth out air bubbles; HOWEVER, you'll also need a (flexible) tape measure, liquid soap, a small plastic spray bottle (like the one in the attached picture), and something to mark the film with - I STRONGLY recommend using white cray pas/oil pastel crayon to mark the film when you measure it -- Regular pen/pencil/marker won't show up on the film because it's black and glossy - I also recommend getting hypoallergenic/fragrance free soap, as you'll be spritzing the windows with soapy water and then immediately applying the film; dish soap will leave a lingering smell ... show more

    • Great for night shift workers. No light gets through!
The film was easy to apply but took some time. Follow the instructions and schedule the project for a time that you won't be rushed. Be careful not to let dust, bugs, hair or other contaminants get on the adhesive once the protective backing is removed. We had to remove a window air conditioner prior to installing the film. Of course we were installing this at night so a few bugs/gnats flew in. We vacuumed the window and the ceiling near the light before exposing the adhesive. The film works perfectly. Unfortunately some light still gets in through the air conditioner. Our bedroom windows never get direct sunlight. They aren't shaded but you can't look out and see the actual sun. The windows are on the north and northeast sides of our home. This film makes those windows pitch black. From the outside it simply appears like the curtains are drawn and the room is dark inside. ... show more

    • A little tricky to install - but does the job

I purchased this to black out a double-hung window in my grow room to block any light during the flowering period. It was a little tricky to install for sure, but it does a great job. Depending on how much care you take trimming it can leave a little glass showing on the edges and it might be fine for your application. For me I need it 100% dark so I just covered these areas with black tape. Getting all the bubbles out can take some time too. I did not need a real finished look so I did not work them all out, but it can be done - just takes time. Depending on the size of piece(s) you are working with (mine were approx 22x30), it can be tough to control. It wants to curl and stick back on itself. It's really a two person job and to be fair the instructions note that as well. I did it on my own - but got the job done. I still give it five stars since it does block all the light. I don't think you can find a film type product that would be "easy" to install. It takes some time and patience. So if you don't have either, just get some black construction paper, tape it to your window and be done with it. But if you want a nice clean look and are willing to spend some time getting it installed - I can definitely recommend this product. It does what it's designed to do. ... show more

    • Air Traffic Controller Needs Darkness ;)

So as an Air Traffic Controller I crave sleep at different times of the day and week. Sometimes going to bed at 6AM is not conducive to bright sun light. I received this item yesterday and installed right away. I gotta say. It's BLACKOUT. It's just a little tough to get it on and just right but once you do it definitely blacks out your windows. With the sun shining directly on it you can barely see out with a pinkish maroons tint. But the light DOES NOT come in. The best thing about this is you can install it and then still open your windows. It will be totally blacked out so you can't see out but if you like to open your windows during the day or whatever you still can. I have tried everything. I recently had cardboard and black gorilla tape covering my windows but we could never open them. Now this is the next best thing and the windows can open. The tint comes with a little squeege and box cutter, they are perfect. Only other thing I used was soapy water in a spray bottle and scissors. I did 4 windows, 2 in bedroom and 2 in bathroom in about an hour and half (got 2 - 36" x 6Ft rolls). Toughest part is getting the film away from the actual blackout tint. I just used the box cutter to ever so slightly cut the film and peel it back. If your window is soapy enough you can actually slide the tint around just a little to get it in place. Anyway, the only reason I have 4 stars is I just installed yesterday. So I wanna see how it holds up. See if it peels away or starts falling off. If it stays in place then this is easily a 5 out of 5 purchase. It was delivered in like 3 days as well. Great!! ... show more

    • An Amazing Success Story

I used this film to cover 2 skylights in my bedroom & 1 skylight in the bathroom temporarily. We are remodeling & with the intense sun coming thru- upstairs was too hot to work in. We have outside temps well over 100* & this idea was our hope to see an easy remedy to reduce the inside room temperature upstairs. Application was as directed even working overhead. I sprayed both the film & interior skylight well with a mixture of dish soap & water. The film is substantial so it didn’t flop or fold. It moved in place as long as surfaces were wet & remained fixed in place without a problem. There was zero light coming thru the skylights. The film was a solid black cover that blocked sunlight 100%. As temperatures eventually climbed outside to 107* with direct sunlight on our roof, these 3 skylights remained totally black & intact. Our interior room temperature was reduced following applyication by 7*-8* & that was when temps outside were in the 90’s. We are now up to 107* & the interior temperature remains the same. Talk about success!!! We are absolutely amazed by the outcome due to this product! This film is an inexpensive solution & our upstairs is comfortable to work & live in now.     • and there was just nothing that made it look like there was a film

I swear I could not recognize that there was a clear film on this until after I had applied it. I tried to separate the clear film from the tint for several minutes, and there was just nothing that made it look like there was a film. I tried the two pieces of tape method several times, and nothing! I tried wrinkling it in between my fingers, nothing. The edge looked razor sharp, and there was no clear film that I could see. I thought they had changed their product or something. This is my first time using something like this. I applied it to the window, and then randomly stumbled across a random person's youtube video..not the manufacturer instructions, but just a regular schmoe. They had problem finding the clear film to take off from the tinted side, and they said the only way they could manage to separate the two is if they tore a corner of it. I did the same with a scrap piece that I had leftover...and I groaned. I'm wondering if it will stay stuck to my window. Maybe it will. If it does come off I am hoping I will be able to finally take off the clear film and get it applied to the window. I'll leave my review with this...there is absolutely no indication in how it is packed on which side is the clear film and which is the tint. And unless you have eyes as good as Geordi from Star Trek The Next Generation, you might not be able to see a difference either. If I need any more film, I won't buy it from this manufacturer again. ... show more

I am a medical professional that works overnights. I moved into a quaint home recently that has a lot of natural lighting, unfortunately. Even though I have blackout curtains, enough light still came in through my bedroom doors and windows to keep me from sleeping well. Finally, I threw in the towel and bought this product. Let me first say that I am no stranger to window clings. I have both tinted and clinged my windows in the past. That said, I was not prepared for the stickiness of this product. As such, my best advice is to arm yourself with a spray bottle of soapy water right out of the chute. The second the film comes off of this product, hose it down liberally with the soapy water or you're going to have a big mess on your hands. After the soapy water is placed on the film and window, it goes up easily. I recommend that you follow this order for application: spray both surfaces with soapy water, place on window, flatten and de-bubble, cut with provided knife. It really could not be more simple. Plan to have 2 people to help if the windows are over 1.5' wide or tall. After having placed this up, my bedroom has gone from a sunny room to a coffin. Even in the dead of the day with the curtains pulled back, only the tiniest slivers of light are visible. 10/10 would recommend this product to anyone who wants a PITCH BLACK ROOM 24-7-365. Plan ahead and buy a lamp; you're going to need one. ... show more
