Features

  • It is a tropical tree which makes a fine addition to a South Florida gardener's backyard fruit "orchard." A native of the West Indies, it is a small, attractive, fast-growing tree that won't reach much more than 12 feet, although it can be kept clipped back to shrub size.
  • It's leaves are small and evergreen, borne densely on rather brittle branches. The branches of some varieties droop; others are quite upright.
  • The bright pink, five-petaled flowers are small but pretty, with the trees blooming mainly from April through October although some blossoms appear year around. Fruiting is from May to November, but again, a few cherries may be picked now and then throughout the winter.
  • Barbados cherry, or acerola, is a large, bushy shrub or small tree that reaches mature heights of about 12 feet (3.5 m.). This attractive shrub produces thick, bright green leaves. Small, pinkish-lavender flowers bloom from spring to fall, and may pop up year round in warmer climates usually after irrigation or a rainfall.
  • Harvest Barbados cherries when the fruit is fully ripe. Wear gloves, though, because the fuzz on the stems and leaves can irritate the skin, especially when the tree is young.

  • They Are Starting To Thrive
Style: 2 Plants
I took a chance and ordered these with no reviews, so I thought I owed them one. First, buying plants online can be hit or miss, but I wanted something that would thrive in the brutal Florida sun, and these seemed to fit the bill, so I took the chance. When they arrived, I thought they were a bit small for this price point, with very few leaves. But, the root structure looked healthy and in good condition. I got them into a quality potting soil in a fabric grow bag the same day. The one lost the only leaf it came with, the other lost 3, leaving it with only one. I must admit, I was nervous. I kept the soil moist and they got plenty of that good Florida sunshine. After a few days I started to notice new leaves emerging. After a couple weeks, I feel safe in saying that both plants are growing and appear to be thriving. All that said, I am happy with the purchase. They were well packaged and arrived in the time frame indicated. While small for the price, they bounced back and are now growing. I would be leery ordering if you are very far from Florida. At the end of the day, I’m giving them 4 stars. ... show more

  • You don't always get what you paid for.
Style: 4 Plants
I paid extra for the 2"pot size and I still got the 1" size. The trees I got were alive and are growing .so if you want them go ahead but don't pay extra for the larger size you won't get what you pay for.

  • Can’t wait for them to grow!
Style: 4 Plants
They were tinier than I expected but 4” really not that big, still waiting to upsize the pot, just wanting to make sure they have a good root system. But I know they will grow fast. Replacing some that froze last year. This time I will keep in pots so I can bring inside when it gets below 40* so I recommend the same if you live in a cold climate. ... show more
