And having spent more than 75 years in this industry, we feel confident to call ourselves one of the foremost experts in child safety. We are only satisfied once we have tested far above the safety standards and far beyond what is required by the law. If the requirement states that a safety gate must be able to withstand a pressure of 100, we test the gate with a significantly higher pressure. This at the very core of who we are, because the safety of children is of paramount importance for us in BabyDan. And we keep on testing and developing until we find the safest and best solution.

  • Outstanding Pet Gate, High Quality. Great Vendor (The North Witch) & (Frugal Living) Outstanding Pet Gate, High Quality. Great Vendor (The North Witch) & (Frugal Living)
The gate along with the included three extension pieces and the optional 9.5” extension work extremely well and appear to be constructed so they will be long lasting. The product itself is a solid five star item. The instructions however are by illustrations only. It took us a while to figure out how to interpret the meaning and to pick the proper configuration for our desired size. But, once we understood it was a snap to install. The people at the Amazon seller, “The North Witch” in the UK are very helpful and respond in a very timely manner. This is a “6” Star product and a top of the line vendor, “The North Witch”. UPDATE: Just received my third BabyDan gate and second extension for the BabyDan gate. The gate itself was almost identical to the first two, perhaps a later or earlier model as it had the name embossed on the top near the hinge and also the thumb release lever. This is not a problem and is not even noticed. I only mention it as it was proof to me that the model level was different. BUT, the extension was far different. The first extension we got had one flat piece with several attached non-removable slats on it. It also included three or four individual slats that could be used as needed. All in all, the first extension we got from North Witch was very flexible and easy to use to obtain the proper width. The second extension we got (from Frugal Living) was two hinged folding gate parts with four fixed slats each and no loose slats that could be used to extend, etc.. To my knowledge, this is not the fault of Frugal Living as what we received is identical to what was pictured on the container from the manufacturer. But we almost sent it back as we only needed the addition of one slat and expected there to be at least three in the package. To use one of the hinged parts we removed the three slats from the main gate part and inserted one of the new hinged extensions. Well, now the gate won't fold as there are two folds adjacent going the same way. Inserted the other hinged part and the gate now folds but is way too long even with all the removable slats removed. Took the last hinged part from the original gate that was next to the latch end off and the length is "about" correct. The last fold is still backward but since the end is not attached when folded it can wrap around the rest and is out of the way. Again, I do not believe that this is the fault of Frugal Living but if they can send me the alternate extension and pay for the return of the "weird" extension, it would be very happy. This does not change my opinion of the gate unless the extension is a newer part, if so then I would change my rating to a three star if you required an extension. ... show more

  • The absolute baby gate solution for stairs!
This gate is PERFECT! We used it on our stairs where a traditional baby gate wouldn't work because the bottom step and banister are offset from the wall. We searched for months for a baby gate that would fit out needs and even tried a couple. All we had to show for it before we found this gate was missing paint from our walls and lots of holes. Because of the offset in our stairs/wall, it meant we had to install the gates a few steps up from the bottom, which was really awkward in that a short baby gate would loom high over your head. If the gate was open, that meant it would swing out into your walking path. If you weren't paying attention, you could take your eye out with the latching mechanism. Needless to say, it was a new danger for adults! When I came across this baby gate, I knew I had finally found the perfect solution, and I was not wrong. We had to do a little creative rigging between our banister posts because of our offset issue, but my husband is a whiz at things like that. He fitted a2x6 between the rails and attached a 2x4 to that for the gate closing mechanism. Then he attached the actual gate to the wall. The absolute beauty of this gate is that it folds up against the wall when its not in use. It doesn't swing out and create a new hazard. When you release the gate, it automatically folds back up against the wall. The only complaint I have, and its a tiny one, is that the unlock mechanism can be a little tricky until you get used to it. I truly LOVE this gate, and it is going to be around in our house for the next few years. ... show more

  • Easy install, visually appealing and serve our purpose perfectly! Easy install, visually appealing and serve our purpose perfectly!
We love easy these are to use and how child proof the opening mechanism is. The height won't work if you have a little one that is a climber and many pets could easily jump over it, so be sure to measure and see if it will work for your needs before you purchase. These gates look much nicer that traditional baby gates and open wide to allow a larger use of the doorway than many other gates. A much better option than the mesh gates which an animal or child could easily get under. We are sold on these gates! Highly recommend watching the YouTube video before installing. ... show more

  • Good solution for small dogs and small children
I rarely give 5 stars, but this came pretty close (wish Amazon would hear the community on 1/2 stars!!!) We were looking for a gate to keep our little poodle who recently started having seizures from falling down the stairs to the basement as well as stopping our small nieces and nephews who have become more ambulatory of late. We considered several options, but none but this gate system met all that we were looking for. We needed it to not block access to the stairwell when opened, needed to be able to keep a <5 lb dog from slipping through, and needed to be safe enough that toddlers weren't going to easily figure out how to circumvent it. This gate works well. It is unconventional in its approach but that is probably what makes it work so well. It can be mounted both inside or outside on the 'face' of the stairwell. Since our stairs to the basement don't have a door, and we didn't want to lose any of the 4' width we specifically built with for moving furniture and large objects up and down the stairs, this was important to us. For that reason, we went beyond the specifications on width for face mounting, ordering 2 extenders and using all the included extension pieces; I have to say it works fabulously. I was a little concerned about it given the manufacturer states a maximum width of 40.7" when mounted outside a door frame, but looking closely at the design before ordering I decided to take the chance. We are getting roughly 51" of width out of it, with not enough gap when the gate is pushed on for a small toddler to wriggle down onto the stairs or the small dog to fall into the gap, but still maintaining the flex it is supposed to have. While I don't think you could extend this infinitely, I am not concerned at all about the fact that BabyDan doesn't call out being able to go this wide. I cannot perceive any difference in function or safety mechanisms going this wide, but obviously you should always be careful if you're pushing a product beyond its documented limits. Opening the gate definitely stumped the older kids at first, but we've all been able to open it single handed with no real issues, even our 12 year old, which is important since his room is in the basement. I found installation to be super simple, though the instruction manual definitely needs some work. The design is simple enough to understand I didn't end up using it. I get the idea of trying to be 'universal' so you have a thinner manual, but the pictures do not speak a thousand words in this case, or if they are speaking, it isn't English :-). SOME words to explain what was being depicted would go a long way to helping articulate some things, like 'skip ahead to this page for this width of gate'. I've never bought anything from an Ikea, but if this is the Ikea instruction philosophy, I likely won't. This was not a good customer experience from the angle of the manual. Fortunately, anyone with a modicum of handiness and understanding of putting together home products will see how this goes together right away and wonder why the manual was even included. The brackets are very cleverly designed so that there are holes for both the inside and outside mounting options, and the plastic is very sturdy and strong. The only possible weak point I see in the design (outside of installation mistakes) is the gate itself is attached to the fixed side with what I call a square receiver nut. When you slide the gate into the fixed end, there is a square hole on the gate you must align to a square hole on the bracket, and then fit the receiver nut into that square hole and run a small screw into it from the other side of the gate to lock it into the mounting bracket. I have seen designs like this on other products that move around a lot work loose over time. A sparsely threaded squared bolt with a locking nut would perhaps have been a better design choice. I'm hoping that the testing BabyDan shows on their website has been employed on this element to see the effect of thousands of swings of the gate and whether that screw can come loose over time. This wasn't enough of a concern for me NOT to install the system, however. The only piece I found fault with outside the manual was the length of the screws that come for attaching to the wall -- they need to be longer, perhaps a 2.5" minimum as opposed to the 2". I replaced them with 3" screws to get enough purchase on the studs to make me comfortable that it was going to stay rock solid and not work its way out of the wall over time. When we have to start worrying about the grandkids getting around, I will likely purchase another unit for the stairwell leading to the second story, I like this so much. Very good product. Would suggest they do testing at > 48" for American homes that typically have wider staircases required by building codes. ... show more

  • Great Gate! Great Gate!
The packaging came extremely damaged, I was worried there would be pieces missing or the gate itself would be damaged. I’m happy to say everything was fine. Although very expensive for a baby gate, I love it. We have a non standard opening between our living room and kitchen and were looking for something more durable than a mesh “gate” because our dogs would trash it. I saw this gate on a video by The Baby Guy NYC and thought it might work. Our opening requires that I purchase 2 extension panels, which I bought through Nordstrom because they were much cheaper than amazon. We have 1/2” trim so I needed 1/2” spacers in order to install, which meant I also needed 3” screws rather than the ones provided. They were easy enough to find at Lowe’s. Other than sourcing extra materials, installation was super easy. The instructions are not clear in the manual but there is a video on YouTube that explains everything, just scan the QR code on the box and it will take you to the video. ... show more

  • Best gates! And they have been tested for sure… Best gates! And they have been tested for sure…
I have four little boys and these gates have been up in their playroom for two years. They have been slammed into, toys thrown at them, colored on, shaken repeatedly, you name it! And they are still going strong. The only thing I don’t like is that I had to go through any other gates before this. We had pressure mounted and other retractable gates and none of them lasted at all. These were easy to customize to the space and I love how they fold completely out of they way when we don’t need them. The accordion style keeps my large dog from trying to jump over it and I can open and close it one handed! Highly recommend ... show more

  • Be prepared to buy an extension kit Be prepared to buy an extension kit
This gate has the potential to be a great baby gate, but they purposely make the gate 1 inch shorter than most doorways (36 inches) in your home, which forces you to buy the extension kit for an additonal $25 if you want the gate to function properly. I feel a bit cheated after I already spent $90 on the gate itself, to now be forced to spend an additional $25 to make it work properly. I bought this gate because of its retracting capability, but $115 is a steep price to pay for any baby gate. ... show more

  • Total score! And my lab can't open it like she did the swing gate.
Really pleasantly surprised! We had never seen a design like this and we needed a really inconspicuous gate for our stair well. This was perfect. It blends in well and we've beven had compliments on how it hides when not in use. I love that I don't have to lean it up against a wall and listen to it crash on the floor, or wrestle it into a closet. It just retracts nearly unnoticed and is ready immediately when I need it. We have 6 kids and 4 adults in the house and this gate gets opened and closed probably dozens of times a day. I'm impressed with the durability. It hasn't gotten wobbly and the mechanism seems as sturdy as day 1. My 13 month old also likes to pull up and look over. This thing holds so well. It has an accordion style so the wall flexes back and forth just an inch or so. It is perfect. It holds him really well. The hinges don't pinch his fingers and I don't have to stress about it. I love that. I always thought gates were so annoying I avoided them when possible. This one though actually is a pleasure. Works on my Labrador too who figured out how to unlatch our other gate! Bonus! Definitely recommend this one! ... show more
